Methods for administering a vaccine for a virus or bacteria to an individual comprising administering a first portion of the vaccine to the individual via one route and administering a second portion via a second, different route. In a specific embodiment, the first route is sublingually. Vaccines are provided in the form of dry powder compositions comprising a combination of nanoparticles and microparticles, or in the form of a wafer which dissolves in water at room temperature in less than about one minute. Storage stable unit dosages of a vaccine are provided by individually packaging individual unit dosages of a dry powder composition comprising the vaccine and a carrier in blister compartments formed of gas and moisture resistant material.

A method of making fine dry particles of substances is provided by forming a composition comprising a substance of interest and a supercritical or near critical fluid; rapidly reducing the pressure on said composition, whereby droplets are formed; and passing said droplets through a flow of heated gas. The supercritical fluid solution is passed into a subcritical region to evaporate the solvent and form a gas-borne dispersion of solute particles. The gas-borne dispersion of solute particles is administered directly to the target human or animal. The apparatus for delivering the physiologically active compound are of the hand-held type.

Stable mixed metal oxide compositions containing nitrogen are formed by treating an oxygen-deficient perovskite composition with nitrogen dioxide. Preferably, the oxygen-deficient perovskite is of the formula X.sub.a Z.sub.b Cu.sub.c O.sub.h wherein X is a member selected from the group consisting of yttrium, scandium, lanthanum, neodymium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium, bismuth and thallium, Z is a member selected from the group consisting of barium, strontium, calcium, magnesium and mixtures thereof, a is not less than 1, b is from 0 to 3, c is from 0 to 3, and h is not greater than about 6, and the mixed metal oxides are of the formula X.sub.a Z.sub.b Cu.sub.c N.sub.j O.sub.k where X, Z, a, b and c are as previously defined, j is from about 0.001 to about 3, and k is from about 6 to about 13.

Stable mixed metal superconductive oxides containing nitrogen

A method for depositing a film of a desired material on a substrate comprises dissolving at least one reagent in a supercritical fluid comprising at least one solvent. Either the reagent is capable of reacting with or is a precursor of a compound capable of reacting with the solvent to form the desired product, or at least one additional reagent is included in the supercritical solution and is capable of reacting with or is a precursor of a compound capable of reacting with the first reagent or with a compound derived from the first reagent to form the desired material. The supercritical solution is expanded to produce a vapor or aerosol and a chemical reaction is induced in the vapor or aerosol so that a film of the desired material resulting from the chemical reaction is deposited on the substrate surface. In an alternate embodiment, the supercritical solution containing at least one reagent is expanded to produce a vapor or aerosol which is then mixed with a gas containing at least one additional reagent. A chemical reaction is induced in the resulting mixture so that a film of the desired material is deposited.

Chemical deposition methods using supercritical fluid solutions

In a redox reaction process, the oxidized state of organic compounds is increased through the steps of directing oxides of nitrogen together with a reducing agent selected from oxygenated compounds and aromatic compounds through a catalyst bed in the form of supported gold heated to a temperature sufficient to reduce the oxides of nitrogen present to nitric oxide, after which the higher oxidized forms of organic compounds are recovered. The organic compounds to be oxidized can be separated by chromatography before introduction with one of the oxides of nitrogen into the catalyst bed, and detection of the reducing agent by chemiluminescent measurement of NO.sub.2.sup.* enables determination of the higher oxidized species produced.

Liquid hydrocarbon-soluble rare earth chelates prepared from the novel ligand 2,2,7-trimethyl-3,5-octanedione when dissolved in fuels such as gasoline and diesel oil prevent formation and/or effect removal of carbonaceous deposits during the combustion thereof. The use of fuels containing these chelates promotes more efficient operations of devices such as internal combustion engines in which the fuels are burned by minimizing or eliminating the accumulation of harmful carbonaceous materials in the combustion chambers and by preventing knocking and/or other undesirable performance characteristics.

Liquid hydrocarbon-soluble rare earth chelates prepared from the novel

A lanthanide chelate of a fluorinated ligand is used as a nuclear magnetic resonance shift reagent for spectral simplification and clarification. Since the use of the shift reagents of this invention facilitates compound identification and increases the scope of the applicability of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, the present invention is particularly useful in detecting and analyzing compounds which are or may be pollutants.
