The non-symmetrical half-duplex data communications apparatus includes interface circuitry that is connectable to the communications link and modulation circuitry to transmit and receive the non-symmetrical half-duplex signals over the communications link. The modulation circuitry of the non-symmetrical half-duplex data communications apparatus includes the ability to transmit data signals with a transmission time that is different than the transmission time of receive signals. The modulation circuitry of the non-symmetrical half-duplex data communications apparatus also includes the ability to transmit data signals with a transmission data rate different than the transmission data rate of receive signals.

Apparatus and method for a central office data communications apparatus allows for combining the voice POTS and high speed modem data processing functions into one device at the central office. The combination of the signals allows for a single high-speed CODEC which samples both a POTS signal and the high-speed modem signals to be utilized. This eliminates the need for external POTS splitters and costly duplicative circuitry.

Apparatus and method for a combined DSL and voice system

An echo canceler disabling system is associated with a cellular data communications device, such as a modem, which is utilized to communicate digital data over a cellular network for the purpose of enhancing digital data communications over the network. The echo canceler disabling system is configured to disable voice echo cancelers brought on-line during digital data transmission after call startup in order to prevent disruption of digital data communications by the voice echo cancelers. To deactivate the voice echo cancelers, the echo canceler disabling system is configured to transmit a tone at approximately 2100 Hz with 180 degree phase reversals to disable one or more echo cancelers brought on-line after the call startup. In architecture, the echo canceler disabling system includes a mechanism to detect a loss of signal synchronization, a mechanism to send an echo canceler disable tone, and a mechanism to send a retrain signal after the echo canceler disable tone is sent in order to reestablish signal synchronization.

A modem apparatus and method to allow a single central site modem with a low processing power DSP to handle numerous DSL lines. More particularly, the modem apparatus and method take advantage of the bursty nature of Internet data traffic to allow the low processing power DSP equipped modem to handle multiple lines simultaneously. The multiple lines can be serviced via a round robin routine or via a quality of service routine, in which the data traffic on the line is analyzed for real time activity, such analysis using UDP transport layer protocol to determine real time activity. The quality of service routine also constantly monitors the data communications lines during periods of data communication to determine if a data line should be entered into the high priority queue.

Apparatus and method for DSP sharing using statistical properties of data

A re-authentication procedure between the modems of a public switched telephone network (PSTN) data connection, which is between a computer facility and a user, provides a secure method for protecting the computer facility against an active wire tap, or spoofing, by an intruder. In particular, the user's modem and the computer's modem perform a re-authentication procedure throughout the duration of the data connection. This re-authentication procedure is transparently performed on a side channel of the data connection. This side channel can either be an in-band channel or an out-of-band channel. The re-authentication procedure comprises an exchange of encrypted information between the two modems. If one of the modems detects the presence of an active wire tap, that modem simply interrupts the data connection.

Continuous authentication using an in-band or out-of-band side channel

A modem receiver used in a QAM or PSK data communication system is provided with various circuits generating error or monitoring signals indicative of the status of the system. These signals and the in-phase and quadrature components of the received signals are fed to an interface circuit which generates display signals suitable for driving a display unit such as an oscilloscope. These display signals define an image composed of the signal constellation of the received signals and various error or monitoring points.
