There is provided a catalyst and a process for the direct partial oxidation of methane with oxygen, whereby hydrocarbons having at least two carbon atoms are produced. The catalyst used in this reaction is a spinel oxide, such as MgMn.sub.2 O.sub.4 or CaMn.sub.2 O.sub.4, modified with an alkali metal, such as Li or Na.

Catalyst and process for upgrading methane to higher hydrocarbons

There is provided a process for converting methane to hydrocarbons having at least two carbon atoms (i.e. higher hydrocarbons). The process involves oxidizing methane with a metal sulfide oxidizing agent. After this conversion of methane, the reduced metal sulfide may be regenerated by oxidation of the reduced metal sulfide.

The catalyst used in this reaction is a CuZSM-5 catalyst. This catalyst may be prepared by ion exchanging or impregnating a ZSM-5 catalyst with a suitable copper salt such as copper nitrate.

There is provided a process for the direct partial oxidation of methane with oxygen, whereby organic compounds comprising higher hydrocarbons are produced. The catalyst used in this reaction is an NiZSM-5 catalyst. This catalyst may be prepared by ion exchanging or impregnating a ZSM-5 catalyst with a suitable nickel salt such as nickel nitrate.

There is provided a process for the direct partial oxidation of methane with oxygen, whereby organic compounds comprising higher hydrocarbons including C.sub.5 + liquid hydrocarbons are produced. The catalyst used in this reaction may be a ZSM-5 catalyst. The process involves the use of an initial cofeed, such as propane, in admixture with the methane and oxygen to induce the formation of liquid hydrocarbons. As the reaction progresses, the flow of cofeed is shut off, and liquid hydrocarbons continue to be produced.

Conversion of methane

A mixture of organic compounds comprising a major amount of liquid hydrocarbons, mostly aromatic, is formed by the direct partial oxidation of methane in the presence of a ZSM-5 catalyst. The reaction conditions are substantially the same as those required for the direct homogeneous partial oxidation to methanol. However, liquid hydrocarbon formation depends on the presence of a small amount of an impurity such as propane or propylene in the feed; in the absence of such, only methanol is formed. With such modifier present, controls of reaction parameters, e.g., temperature, permits synthesis of both methanol and liquid hydrocarbons in desired proportions. Properly processed natural gas can serve to provide methane and at least part of the reaction modifier.

There is provided a process for the direct partial oxidation of methane with oxygen, whereby hydrocarbons having at least two carbon atoms are produced. The catalyst used in this reaction is a cadmium-manganese oxide catalyst.

A marked improvement in yield, in selectivity or in both is obtained in the synthesis of methanol by the homogeneous direct partial oxidation of natural gas or other source of methane when the reactor space is filled with inert, refractory inorganic particles.

Oxidation of methane to methanol

A polar lubricating fluid comprising aliphatic molecules having hydroxy or ester functional groups. The alcohol lubricant molecules have at least 20 carbon atoms and the ester molecule comprises between 26 and 100 carbon atoms. The oxygenate content of both molecules is at least 0.2 mmoles per gram of lubricant. The alcohol lubricating fluid is produced by a process comprising hydroformylating olefins having at least 20 carbon atoms in the presence of a hydroformylating catalyst and synthesis gas comprising H.sub.2 and CO. The ester lubricating fluid is produced by a subsequent acylation. The reaction is carried out between 150.degree. C. and 300.degree. C.
