An automatic handset lifter is used with a wireless communication system. The system attaches to a conventional telephone and creates a communication link between the telephone and a portable device such as a wireless headset. The system automatically detects the ringing of the telephone by sensing magnetic fields of the telephone speaker. Upon ring detection, the system creates a communications link with the remote device and deploys a mechanical lifting device to lift the handset. Lifting the handset activates the telephone cradle switch to answer the phone and thereby allows the remote device to communicate over the telephone.

The present invention is directed most particularly to wireless communication systems for interconnection with telephone systems, and more particularly to methods and apparatus to suppress unwanted and annoying audio spikes or bursts that infiltrate the wireless system from ultimately reaching the user's earpiece. An embodiment of the invention is directed to a telephone headset amplifier system with a noise blanking or squelching capability, which attenuates the incoming audio signal when the incoming signal exceeds a predetermined threshold.

Telephone headset amplifier with noise blanking capability

A telephone headset including a boom microphone, an earphone, and an ear support constructed and arranged to be adjusted and comfortable for a wearer. The headset is configured with an adjustable ear support to fit a variety of ear sizes without affecting the balance of the ear support on the ear of the wearer. The ear support includes a rotational hinge which is biased into a given position by a compression washer. The earphone is removably and adjustably attached to a mounting ring which in turn is smoothly is movably attached to the ear support by a spring biased ball and socket joint. The combination of flexible joints and removability of the earphone provides the degrees of freedom and striction necessary to permit the earphone to be worn comfortably on either ear of the wearer. A strain relief for the electrical connections is attached to the earphone which directs the electrical connections toward the plane of the head, thereby eliminating a torque which otherwise would tend to dislodge the ear support from the ear. The earphone includes a series of openings in its rear surface to maximize its acoustics. The boom microphone includes a spring biased ball and socket joint to movably fix the orientation of the microphone with respect to the wearer to a good comfort level. The boom microphone ball and socket joint is configured with a tab and stop to prohibit 360 degree rotation of the boom to prevent strain on the electrical connections to the microphone.

Telephone headset

A full duplex infrared communication system suitable for use in connection with a telephone system is disclosed. The communication system includes a base station and a remote wireless set. High quality audio is provided through use of an FM sinusoidal current driven signal transmission between the base station and the remote wireless set. Further, transmission is made over bands which do not harmonically overlap. For example, the base station may transmit at 250-430 1 KHz and the remote wireless set may transmit at 1.45-1.63 MHz. Further, adverse effects of cross-talk and signal reflection are reduced by using transmission carrier signals for the base station and the remote wireless set having different wavelengths. For example, the base station may use LEDs which emit signals at a wavelength of 940 nm while the remote wireless set may use LEDs which emit signals at a wavelength of 880 nm. LEDs with slow turn-on and turn-off times, e.g., approximately 1 microsecond, are used in the Base TX to minimize harmonic radiation and Base RX desensitization. The remote TX LEDs are current driven, and have much faster turn-on and turn-off times than the Base TX LEDs, however its radiated fundamental and harmonics are much higher in frequency than the remote RX frequency and do not effect it during normal operating conditions. Further, the system does not require optical gain (lens, parabolic reflectors) and is omnidirectional.

A flexible microphone boom includes an inner conductor provided from a plurality of wire strands. Disposed about the inner conductor is Fin inner insulator having a first predetermined thickness. Disposed about the inner insulator is a conductive layer and disposed about the conductive layer is a an outer jacket having a second predetermined thickness.

Adjustable telephone headset

An amplifier in a telephone call station which is capable of indicating to a telephone call distribution system whether a microphone headset is in electrical communication with the telephone call station. The amplifier simulates being physically disconnected from the telephone call distribution system when the microphone is disconnected from the amplifier thus informing the telephone call distribution system to redirect telephone calls originally destined for that telephone call station.

A microphone holder includes a housing comprising a base portion having a first aperture therein and sidewall portions disposed on the base to provide the housing with a microphone receiving cavity region. A cover, having a second aperture therein, is disposed over the cavity region of the housing and a baffle is disposed a predetermined distance over a first surface of the cover in the region of the second aperture.

An interface assembly for providing an electrical and mechanical interface between a headset and a headset amplifier, includes a transmit signal path for receiving a signal from the headset microphone and for providing an output signal having electrical characteristics compatible with the headset amplifier. The interface assembly also includes a receive signal path for receiving a signal from the headset amplifier and for providing a signal having electrical characteristics compatible with the headset coupled thereto. Compatibility from headset to headset amplifier may be achieved by adjusting one or more characteristics including but not limited to the frequency response, input/output impedance matching, level adjustment and RFI suppression. Compatibility from headset amplifier to headset may be achieved by adjusting one or more characteristics including but not limited to sound pressure protection, frequency response shaping, input/output impedance matching, level adjustment, ground isolation and RFI suppression.
