Inline crossfold product and method that will provide substantially more insert sheet material than previous inline crossfold methods, and, additional inline crossfold packet configurations, is provided. A bound crossfold booklet, the equivalent of or a small catalog, which is particularly adapted for large mail distribution is provided. The substantially lower mailing cost of a six by nine inch booklet size, instead of the ordinary letter size catalog, yields substantial savings. Production and handling costs are also minimized since the booklets are bound in the inline process, thereby eliminating separate handling and binding costs, where there is a separate binding and envelope stuffing operation required.

An inline formed package having an envelope and insert material, is formed from a single repeat of a printed web both of which are crossfolded simultaneously, approximately along the half repeat line, and the area of the insert material is greater than half the area of the repeat.

A product sampler including a substrate layer, a barrier layer covering the substrate layer, a gelatinoid product layer covering and in contact with the barrier layer, and a barrier layer covering and in contact with the product layer is provided. The gelatinoid product layer may include a microencapsulated product, such as a fragrance. In preferred embodiments of the invention, the gelatinoid product layer includes a microencapsulated fragrance carried in a gelatinoid liquid vehicle, which vehicle may comprise, for example, propylene glycol, polyethylene glycols, glycerin, or mixtures thereof. In a highly preferred embodiment of the invention, the product sampler is in the form of a magazine insert having a protruding trimmable non-barrier substrate tab portion, whereby a user may remove a trim portion from the trimmable edge portion after binding the insert into a magazine without removing barrier material with the removed trim portion. Also disclosed is a product sampler in the form of a label.

Adaptors for expandable mandrels of printing presses are formed as annular members which are slidable over the journals of the mandrel and lockable thereto, the adaptors each having an outwardly expandable external periphery for gripping and holding a printing cylinder of a diameter larger than that of the mandrel.

A printing cylinder is supported and located by dual annular hydraulically-expansible heads carried by a shaft and adjustable axially thereof and which are inserted into the printing cylinder and then expanded inwardly into locking engagement with the shaft and outwardly into locking engagement with the cylinder.

A printing roller is disclosed comprising a three-piece mandrel assembly having a central hollow tubular section and two outer journal sections. Each journal section has hydraulic fluid passageways formed therein and a cylindrical sleeve circumferentially mounted thereon, the inner surface of which is adapted to be pressurized by the hydraulic fluid system. A removable hollow printing cylinder slidably is mounted onto the three piece mandrel and is frictionally held at the outer journal locations through the application of hydraulic pressure upon the cylindrical sleeves mounted upon each journal.

A bind-in insert of lightweight paper stock for use in magazines, catalogs and booklets, has a paper envelope and a narrow, elongated, and impermeable thickened binding strip section disposed along the edge to be bound, the binding strip being formed by folding over and gluing the edge portion of the insert.

A preprinted mail order assembly for mass distribution includes an evelope with a tear-off order blank and a tear-off shipping label. The elements are arranged to permit both outer panels to be fully devoted to advertising, while both interior panels carry the required information and address sections. There are three overlapping sections made from a single web in which two longitudinal fold lines constitute the side edges of the envelope with a longitudinal securing strip adjacent one of the fold lines. Glue along the bottom edges of the envelope and the securing strip hold the envelope together. Two tear lines provide for separation of the order blank and shipping label, removal of which places the envelope in condition for use.
