Disclosed are substituted phenol comprising the reaction product of an alkyl phenol, said alkyl substituent containing about 50 to about 20,000 carbon atoms, and aliphatic unsaturated carboxylic acid containing about 3 to about 100 carbon atoms; and a process for the manufacture of said substituted phenol. The substituted phenol can have the formula ##STR1## where R comprises alkyl substituent containing from about 50 to about 20,000 carbon atoms, and n and r are integers such that n+r.gtoreq.5.ltoreq.15.

Disclosed are processes for making certain compositions, the compositions and lubricating oils containing certain compositions. Disclosed are a substituted phenol comprising the reaction product of an alkyl phenol, said alkyl substituent containing about 50 to about 20,000 carbon atoms, and an aliphatic unsaturated carboxylic acid containing about 3 to about 100 carbon atoms; and a process for the manufacture of said substituted phenol. Phenols alkylated with high molecular weight ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymers are obtained in essentially quantitative yields and with no measurable fragmentation of terpolymer by reacting terpolymer with a large excess of phenol, in the presence of BF.sub.3 as catalyst, at alkylation temperatures of about 170.degree.-300.degree. F. The preferred terpolymers consist essentially of about 35-45 mole percent propylene, 65-55 mole percent ethylene, and about 1.0-2.5 mole percent of a 5-alkenyl-2-norbornene such as 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene. The novel terpolymer alkylated phenol compositions are useful as intermediates for the preparation of multifunctional addition agents for lubricating oils, for example addition agents having combined dispersant-viscosity index improving properties.

Oil soluble high molecular weight Mannich condensation products formed by reacting (1) high molecular weight alkyl-substituted hydroxy aromatic compounds whose alkyl-substituent has a number average molecular weight (Mn) from about 600-100,000, (2) a compound containing at least one HN &lt; group, and (3) an aldehyde in the respective molar reactant ratio of 1:0.1-10:1.0-10, are highly efficient ashless type (metal free) dispersant-detergent lubricant oil addition agents. Lubricating oils containing these compositions provide a high degree of protection against the deposition of sludge and varnish and corrosion when used as crankcase lubricants. Bis-Mannich products prepared by condensing (1) a 850-2500 Mn polyalkyl-substituted phenol, (2) an alkylene polyamine and (3) formaldehyde in the respective molar ratio of 1.0:0.7-1.0:1.5-2.1 are novel products and are especially effective for high severity detergent-dispersant function over the extended oil drain range of crankcase lubricant oils recommended by automobile manufacturers.

Treatment of oil-soluble viscous liquid propene or butene polymers having a number average molecular weight of about 250-500 with gaseous sulfur trioxide in falling-film or static reactors yields acidic sulfonation products comprising alkenyl sulfonic acids and polymer sultones. Two-stage neutralization of the sulfonation product with ammonia or sodium hydroxide reduces the sultone content and increases the sulfonate content in the neutralized product.

Viscous liquid propene or butene polymers having number average molecular weights of about 250-500 are converted to the corresponding oil-soluble ammonium alkenyl sulfonates by treatment of the polymer with gaseous sulfur trioxide in a falling-film reactor, separation of the oil-soluble polymer sulfonic acids and oil-soluble polymer sultones from the sulfonation product mixture, and neutralization of the sulfonic acids and sultones with anhydrous ammonia.
