An inductive-write magnetoresistive-read horizontal head for magnetic recording having two polarization conductors. The two polarization conductors are used to simultaneously activate a MR sensor and to disable the write head during the read back process to eliminate the secondary read back signal from the inductive-write head. During the read process, the current through a first conductor biases the MR stripe while current through the second conductor generates an applied field to switch the magnetization of the Permalloy (NiFe) in the write head pole and reduce the permeability. The head incorporates write-wide read-narrow head attributes and has the reliability advantages associated with yoke or recessed MR or GMR structures. The magnetoresistive stripe may be disposed directly in the gap of the heads or it may be recessed.

Horizontal shared-pole magnetic read/write head having polarization

A plurality of suspension and magnetic head combinations are made on a wafer for longitudinal recording. A horizontal first pole piece and horizontal and vertical components of a second pole piece are formed with a magnetic gap between the first pole piece and the vertical component of the second pole piece. The suspension layers are formed mainly from the insulation layer that separates the horizontal first pole piece and the horizontal component of the second pole piece and an insulation layer that covers and protects the pole pieces. The layers of the combination head are deposited on a wafer in rows and columns. A release layer is deposited on the wafer and then the individual thin film layers of the magnetic head are deposited. The wafer is then divided into rows. The vertical component of the second pole piece is formed on the end of the row in contact with its horizontal component. The substrate is removed by attacking the release layer and then the suspension and magnetic head combinations are cut into separate units.

Method of making integrated suspension magnetic head structures for

The vertical section of the second pole piece is formed on the end of the row in contact with its horizontal section. The substrate is removed by attacking the release layers.

Integrated transducer-suspension structure for longitudinal recording

A combination suspension and transducer magnetic head for longitudinal recording which can be used for contact recording and flying above the media. The transducer includes a horizontal first pole piece and a horizontal and vertical sectioned second pole piece. The magnetic gap is formed between the first pole piece and the vertical section of the second pole piece. The suspension layers are formed mainly from the insulation layer that separate the first horizontal pole piece and the horizontal section of the second pole piece, and an insulation layer that covers and protects the transducer layers. A new and improved unshielded horizontal magnetoresistive head is disclosed which utilizes multiple pairs of magnetoresistive elements. The present invention provides a device which is characterized by reduced output signal undershoot amplitudes, and an increased central peak pulse amplitude, while not significantly affecting the resolution of the device. The device is also characterized by increased signal to noise and signal to interference ratios. Magnetoresistive elements utilized in the device may be fabricated and/or manufactured by simplified processes, resulting in fabrication, manufacturing and cost benefits for the magnetoresistive head. Any number of additional magnetoresistive element pairs may be utilized dependent on the accuracy and resolution required by the specific application.

Unshielded magnetoresistive head with multiple pairs of sensing elements

An unshielded horizontal magnetoresistive head for magnetic sensing and reading devices. The horizontal unshielded magnetoresistive head is comprised of two magnetoresistive elements separated by a gap and a conductive cross member which electrically connects the magnetoresistive elements together and to a common electrical point such as system ground. A differential voltage sensing circuit is connected across the magnetoresistive elements for sensing voltage variations when magnetic data is sensed by the head. The present invention further facilitates a more simplified fabrication process which results in cost savings and more efficient fabrication methods and procedures.

Unshielded horizontal magnetoresistive head and method of fabricating

A thin film magnetic transducer having a magnetic circuit having nickel-iron layers which encloses a portion of first and second windings. The portions of each winding traversing the nickel-iron layers have conductor segments equal in number and separated from each other in parallel planes. The conductor segments of each winding have a center-to-center spacing different from the remaining winding selected to avoid contact with the transition regions of the nickel-iron layers and which results in a common inductance for each winding. The windings are joined at one end to form a center tapped winding.

A film type magnetic transducer head has a yoke formed partially of high permeability material which provides enhanced read capabilities and partially of high saturation magnetization material to obtain the write function benefits associated therewith. The high saturation magnetization material is used in the pole tip region and extends to a location beyond the point of initial saturation and does not extend to a position at which the first coil winding is embraced to prevent or minimize coupling with the windings. With the balance of the joke of high permeability material, the transducer functions substantially as a wholly high saturation magnetization yoke in the write function and as a wholly high permeability material yoke for read purposes.

Composite thin film transducer head

A thin film inductive transducer is shown comprising three magnetic layers (10, 11, 12) deposited on a slider substrate (13) for perpendicular recording of magnetic transitions on a movable magnetic medium. Two magnetic closures are provided. One is defined by electrical contact of one outer magnetic layer (12 or 10) with the intermediate magnetic layer (11 or 11') within the area bounded by conductive turns (a-h) of single layer coil (19 or 19'). The other is defined by electrical contact (10, 12 or 10', 12') outboard of the conductive turns (a-h). Magnetic transitions may be read by conventional peak detection techniques because the disclosed transducer has three pole tips (P1, P2, P3), the central one P2 of which is approximately 33-40% of the thickness of the outer pole tips (P1, P3). To avoid 'wrap-around', the pole tips (P1, P2, P3) are progressively narrower in width as their distance from the substrate (13) increases.

Thin film inductive transducer for perpendicular recording

A thin film magnetic transducer comprises a non-magnetic substrate and a pair of magnetic pole pieces having different widths. The width of the first pole piece deposited on the substrate is greater than that of the second pole piece to prevent a problem associated with misregistration between the pole pieces, which may occur during manufacture. Such misregistration generally results in a 'wraparound', so that the edge of the second pole piece would have an extended portion forming an angle to the normal magnetic transitions created by the pole pieces. The width of the second pole piece is slightly less than the effective width of the data track recorded on a magnetic medium, and the data track width is relatively independent of the dimension of the first pole piece.

Thin film magnetic head

A thin film magnetic head assembly has a multi-turn electrical conducting coil, which is formed by deposition in an elliptical pattern. By virtue of the elliptical pattern, the coil turn portions between the back gap closure and transducing gap of the thin film head are relatively narrow, whereas the coil turn portions furthest from the transducing gap are widest. Corners and sharp ends are eliminated. Electrical resistance effects are thereby minimized and signal output is enhanced.

Thin film magnetic head assembly

This thin film inductive transducer comprises a yoke structure consisting of a pole tip region which joins a back region. To maximize resolution during reading of magnetic transitions from a moving magnetic recording medium, the pole tip region is of preselected constant relatively narrow width, and composed of magnetic layers having edges which extend in a direction normal to the medium for a distance D from an air bearing surface ABS to the back region and having a small thickness at least adjacent the ABS. To minimize the effects of spurious signals from adjacent tracks on the medium, distance D is at least 5/d, where d is the recording density on the medium; however, to maximize transducer efficiency, distance D is not increased significantly above 5/d. To oppose saturation of the yoke structure with applied current and enhance the efficiency of the transducer during recording, the cross-sectional area of the yoke structure is increased in the back region by progressively increasing its width rearward of the pole tip region and concurrently increasing the thickness of said magnetic layers at least about 60%.

Thin film inductive transducer

Plasma tube for gas lasers including an elongate cylindrical glass envelope closed at one end with a conductive metal anode disc and at the other with a metal cathode disc, each of which has been intimately fused with the envelope. The envelope carries an internally mounted capillary having a bore for confining a discharge within the tube, the capillary being supported by a flange member connected between the capillary and the envelope. Each disc has a centrally located aperture which is aligned with the capillary bore, each aperture being closed by a suitable reflector for defining an optical cavity. Fine tuning of the cavity is accomplished by incremental deformation of one or both of the discs.
