A trajectory guiding apparatus and one or more methods associated therewith for facilitating precision-guided alignment and implantation of a DBS therapy device in a patient. A base plate and base frame combination provides a platform for a dual-stage slider (DSS) assembly comprising a bottom stage slider (BSS) table and a top stage slider (TSS) table that each have suitably sized apertures or orifices therethrough for allowing the passage of and securely holding an instrumentation column (IC) assembly whose translational movement (i.e., sideways or forward and/or backward directions along a translational plane) and pivotal/rotational movement (i.e., around a perpendicular axis orthogonal to the translational plane and extending through a pivot or fulcrum) are independently controlled by respective slide actuators in order to properly align the IC assembly to a desired trajectory.

A pivotally rotatable stage is pivotally coupled to a base support and a vertical support operative to support a slider assembly arranged to accommodate an instrumentation column (IC) containing the therapy device. A first gimbal drive is disposed between the pivotally rotatable stage and the base support, wherein the first gimbal drive is actuatable to cause a first pivotal motion of the slider assembly including the IC, the first pivotal motion defined along a first arcuate path pivoted around a first pivotal axis. A second gimbal drive is disposed between the pivotally rotatable stage and the vertical support, wherein the second gimbal drive is actuatable to cause a second pivotal motion of the slider assembly including the IC, the second pivotal motion defined along a second arcuate path pivoted around a second pivotal axis perpendicular to the first pivotal axis.

A trajectory guiding apparatus and one or more methods associated therewith for facilitating precision-guided alignment and implantation of a DBS therapy device in a patient. Orthogonally disposed first and second arcuate racks are independently actuatable by respective pinion drives, wherein the first arcuate rack is coupled to a base support and the second arcuate rack is operative to support a slider assembly arranged to accommodate an instrumentation column (IC) containing the therapy device. The first pinion drive is actuatable to cause a first curvilinear motion of the second arcuate rack including the slider assembly, the first curvilinear motion defined along a first arcuate path on a first perpendicular plane. The second pinion drive is actuatable to cause a second curvilinear motion associated with the slider assembly including the IC, the second curvilinear motion defined along a second arcuate path congruent with the second arcuate rack's curvature and disposed on a second perpendicular plane orthogonal to the first perpendicular plane.

An implantable, substantially isodiametric, low resistance implantable lead having at least one electrode positioned in a stimulation/sensing portion of the lead as well as a method of manufacturing the same. At least the stimulation/sensing portion is unitized through partially surrounding and supporting insulation and conductive element(s) of the stimulation/sensing portion with a fused matrix of material having mechanical properties consistent with a body of the lead.

In one embodiment, a lead extension comprises: a lead body; a plurality of conductors disposed within the lead body; a plurality of terminal contacts on a proximal end of the lead body, wherein the plurality of terminal contacts are electrically coupled to the plurality of conductors; and a housing structure disposed at a distal end of the lead body, the housing structure enclosing a plurality of electrical connectors for making electrical contact with terminal contacts of a stimulation lead, wherein the plurality of electrical connectors are electrically coupled to the plurality of conductors; the housing structure comprising an outer body of a first material and an inner reinforcing structure of a second material, wherein the first material is a relatively pliable biocompatible polymer material and the second material is a relatively rigid material, the reinforcing structure holding the plurality of electrical connectors in a relatively fixed arrangement.

Extension device for coupling between pulse generator and stimulation lead, stimulation system using the same, and method of manufacturing the same

There is disclosed various embodiments of an implantable anchor for anchoring a medical lead within a patient. The implantable anchor includes a body having at least one lumen for receiving a medical lead, a cam integrated with the body and rotatable to extend into the lumen for engaging, compressing and twisting the medical lead to inhibit the movement of the lead with respect to the anchor. The body of the anchor may include at least one slot, sized and positioned to receive a portion of the lead to further facilitate the inhibition of the movement of the lead. The cam may include a handle for facilitating the rotation and locking of the cam.

In one embodiment, an apparatus comprises: a base structure adapted to be inserted within the burr hole; a lead securing member for securing the lead, the lead securing member comprising a first arm structure and a second arm structure, at least one spring loaded structure adapted to exert a force to bring the first arm structure and the second arm structure together; and a positioning tool having a distal end adapted to be inserted within the lead securing member. When the positioning tool is positioned within the lead securing member, the distal end holds the first and second arm structures a sufficient distance apart to receive a lead between the first and second arm structures; wherein the positioning tool comprises a control structure at a proximal end that, when engaged, causes the distal end of the positioning tool to be released from between the first and second arm structures.

Burr hole caps and methods of use

There is disclosed various embodiments of an implantable anchor for permanently anchoring a medical lead. The implantable anchor may include a body having a longitudinal lumen, an access opening defined within a side of the body and in communication with the longitudinal lumen, a locking opening defined on an interior surface of the body, an arm having an interior face, the arm rotatably coupled to the body such that the arm is movable from a first position in which the arm covers the access opening to a second position in which the arm does not cover the access opening, and a locking feature protruding from the interior face of the arm and sized to extend into the locking opening.

In one embodiment, there is disclosed an implantable pulse generator for electrically stimulating a patient, which comprises: a housing enclosing pulse generating circuitry; a header coupled to the metallic housing, the header including an inner guide having cylindrical passages for accepting feedthrough wires such that the inner guide is slidingly coupled to the plurality of feedthrough wires, wherein the inner guide has an exterior surface which intersects a portion of each cylindrical passage to create an exposed portion of each feedthrough wire, an outer seal having an interior surface sized to support terminals against the exposed portion of the feedthrough wires, and an outer clip component fitting over at least a portion of the outer seal component.

Implantable pulse generator and method of use

In one aspect, an apparatus is provided for securing an electrical stimulation lead in position in a person's brain. The apparatus includes a body configured to seat within a burr hole formed in the person's skull. The apparatus also includes a central elastic membrane coupled to the body and extending across a central aperture of the body. The elastic membrane includes a number of pre-formed openings provided for purposes of securing the lead in position within the brain after implantation. Each pre-formed opening may penetrate through an entire thickness of the elastic membrane. Each pre-formed opening may be selected for insertion of the lead into the brain. Each pre-formed opening is adapted to elastically expand as the lead is inserted through the pre-formed opening and positioned in the brain and is adapted to elastically contract on the lead to secure the lead in position within the brain after implantation.
