A polyester polymer and method for making the polyester, wherein the polyester is prepared by (1) combining in a reactor a monomer containing a diacid moiety; a monomer comprising a diol moiety; and a monomer containing an isosorbide moiety; with a condensation catalyst suitable for condensing aromatic diacids and diols; and (2) heating the monomers and catalyst to polymerize the monomers to yield a polyester having an inherent viscosity of at least about 0.15 dL/g.

Isosorbide containing polyesters and methods for making same

A polyester container made from a polymer having ethylene glycol moieties, isosorbide moieties and terepthaloyl moieties, and the method of making the container is described. The polyester container is suitable for holding liquids and solids, and may be hot-filled or cold-filled. In particular, wide-mouth jars and narrow-necked bottles may be formed. The polyester has an inherent viscosity of at least 0.35 dL/g when measured as a 1% (weight/volume) solution of the polyester in o-chlorophenol at a temperature of 25.degree. C.

Provided is a method for preparing polysiloxy containing naphthalocyanine compounds. The method comprises reacting a cyclosiloxane with a nucleophile to open the ring of the cyclosiloxane. The ring opened cyclosiloxane is then reacted with a naphthalocyanine precursor and a capping group compound. The nucleophile can perform the dual role of the nucleophile and the capping group compound. The method permits the preparation of siloxane containing naphthalocyanine compounds in a more proficient manner through the use of cyclosiloxanes as reactants.

Complex metal oxides are formed by calcining in molecular oxygen such as air at least one bimetallic complex of the formula A[BY] wherein A and B are metals and Y is a ligand associated with B. The bimetallic complexes are precipitated from aqueous solution by a transposition reaction of AX and M[BY] wherein X is a disassociable anion and M is a cationic species. The bimetallic complexes are useful in forming pure complex metal oxide fibers by a process of either dispersing the complex metal oxide or bimetallic precursors in a spinning composition of fluid organic polymer or by imbibing a polymeric fiber with species AX and precipitating out the bimetallic complex by treating the imbibed fiber with a compound containing the BY complex. The process is also useful in forming superconductive complex metal oxides. The use of the bimetallic complex as precursors for the complex metal oxides provide improved mixing of the metal elements on an atomic scale and thus require less severe mixing and annealing conditions to form the oxide.

Boron-containing ceramics are formed from organoboron preceramic polymers which are carboralated acetylenic polymers. The polymers can be formed by carboralating acetylenic or diacetylenic diols and condensing the diols to form carboralated polyesters. In an alternative process, polydiacetylene formed by the polymerization of diacetylene monomers having conjugated triple bonds are carboralated subsequent to polymerization. A process for obtaining readily soluble polydiacetylenes comprises heating a diacetylene diol in a high boiling solvent.

Pyrolyzation in an inert atmosphere yields boron carbide while pyrolyzation in a reactive gas burns away the precarbonaceous polymer and yields a ceramic comprising the reaction product of boron and the pyrolyzation gas.
