A vortex suppression device is provided which includes a plurality of spaced apart porous panels arranged generally parallel with respect to each other for placement adjacent a suction pipe inlet. The panels of the suppression device are oriented generally perpendicular to, or parallel to the suction pipe inlet. The device serves to prevent formation of a sufficiently strong vortex capable of pulling a continuous gas core into the suction piping.

Cartridge type vortex suppression device

A fingerprint enrollment and verification module is connected to the electrical circuit of a vehicle to prevent operation of the vehicle by unauthorized users. The module has a sensor that creates a template of a fingerprint when a finger is placed on the module. The module has a flash memory to store enrolled templates and a verification step. After a fingerprint has been enrolled in the module, any operation of that vehicle is possible only after the user's fingerprint is verified to match the enrolled template.

A method of evaluating a containment building design includes the steps of assembling a first database of test results; selecting models (algorithms) for the design to be evaluated; comparing a first set of test results of the model to test results in the first database of test results; establishing uncertainty boundaries for the first set of test results of the model; assembling a second database of test results; determining whether the test results of the second database are within the uncertainty boundaries of the model; and evaluating an actual or proposed containment building design based upon the model when test results of the second database are within the uncertainty boundary.

Process for synthesizing a database for nuclear power plant containment evaluation

Phenomena in water systems caused by hydraulic transients known as &ldquo;waterhammer&rdquo; are suppressed by surge vessels containing crushable, cellular, polymeric materials such as polyethylene, polyurethane and polystyrene foam. The foam may be one piece or in the form of several separate particles contained in nylon netting. A water permeable screen is located between a nozzle connection and the cellular polymeric materials for retaining the materials in the surge vessels as the water flows into and out of the vessels. The foam occupies much of the volume in the surge vessels not occupied by the water and the gas contained in the foam can not readily dissolve into the water.

Waterhammer suppression apparatus

A device for preventing melt-through of a reactor vessel comprising a first spray nozzle means disposed adjacent a bottom of the reactor vessel for spraying between 50 and 375 gpm of cooling water onto the lower bottom of the reactor vessel and for cooling and preventing melt-through of the reactor vessel; a second spray nozzle means disposed adjacent a body of the reactor vessel for spraying between 100 and 750 gpm of cooling water onto the body of the reactor vessel and for cooling and preventing melt-through of the reactor vessel; and a third spray nozzle means disposed adjacent an upper head of the reactor vessel for spraying between 50 and 375 gpm of cooling water onto the upper head of the reactor vessel and for cooling and preventing melt-through of the reactor vessel.

Device for preventing melt-through of a reactor vessel

The invention relates to an apparatus for propping open grill lids which is adjustable to allow for various elevations of the lid of the grill. Use of the apparatus retains heat within the grill, saves fuel by limiting the oxygen supply to the grill; requires no additional tools; is easy to remove, and is self storing. The invention also reduces cooking time.

Grill prop

Apparatus for the controlled venting of gases from the containment housing of a chemical or nuclear reactor. The vent path is configured as a manometer filled with a low melting point metal. Gases passing through the manometer are exhausted to a tank of scrubbing solution where toxic materials are removed prior to venting the gases from the containment housing.

Passive filtered containment vent

A bracket board is disclosed for supporting a bracket in which a base has disposed thereon a plurality of parallel horizontal facing panels. Each of the facing panels is separated from an adjacent facing panel by a horizontal groove. A reinforcing Z-section member is disposed in each of the horizontal grooves with the upper arm of each Z-section member being sandwiched between the base and an undercut on the lower edge of each facing panel.
