The invention provides a new apparatus and method for forming thin metal parts of simple or intricate shape and depositing the same onto selected receiving surfaces. The parts may be in the form of wire leads which are bonded to the receiving surfaces. The invention consists in providing a hollow tool which includes a porous body with an exposed surface having a selected two-dimensional or three-dimensional geometry, immersing the surface of the porous body in a melt of a metal which will not wet the surface, pulling the tool away from the metal while applying a suction force to the porous body so that a portion of the melt will adhere to the surface, bringing the tool into contact with a receiving surface, and cooling the surface and removing the suction force so that the adhering portion of the melt will be deposited as a solid or partially solidified body onto the receiving surface. The deposited part will bond securely to the receiving surface if the latter is made of a material which is wetted by the melt.

The parts may be in the form of wire leads which are bonded to the receiving surfaces. The invention consists in providing a hollow tool which includes a porous body with an exposed surface having a selected two-dimensional or three-dimensional geometry, immersing the surface of the porous body in a melt of a metal which will not wet the surface, pulling the tool away from the melt while applying a suction force to the porous body so that a portion of the melt will adhere to the surface, bringing the tool into contact with a receiving surface, and cooling the surface and removing the suction force so that the adhering portion of the melt will be deposited as a solid or partially solidified body onto the receiving surface. The deposited part will bond securely to the receiving surface if the latter is made of a material which is wetted by the melt.

The andiron comprises four corner posts and upper and lower sets of horizontal log support bars. The lower bars are continuous and are adapted to support a plurality of logs in a horizontal position above the floor of a fireplace. One of the upper bars is continuous and the other is open at its center. The open centered bar has two end portions, each of which is adapted to support at least one log in a horizontal position above the lower logs. The open center permits one or more additional logs to be placed diagonally, with the lower ends(s) thereof on the lower set of logs and the opposite end(s) on the continuous upper support bar. The sloping attitude of the additional log(s) facilitates both its ignition and the ignition of the upper set of logs. As the logs burn they eventually break at their centers and fall downwardly into the confines of the andiron, usually into diagonal positions with their outer ends supported on one of the cross members.

Pencils made with a resin-based sheath to replace wood sheaths. A sheath material consisting essentially of a resin binder, a fibrous filler and a metallic soap is extruded around a marking core. The resulting extrudate is immediately chilled after leaving the die, and cut into pencil lengths. The apparatus includes core feeding and transport means, core preheating means and chilling means. The resulting pencils possess the physical qualities associated with wood-sheathed pencils due to the fine, closed cell structure of the sheath material. The surface of the sheath is smooth and may be coated with a pigmented resin or painted.
