Vinyl ethers are prepared by reacting divinyl ether with a primary alcohol in the presence of a catalytic amount of red mercuric oxide and trifluoroacetic acid. The vinyl ethers so produced are particularly useful as monomers which can be polymerized into energetic macromolecular binder materials with excellent mechanical, physical and energetic properties.

Synthesis of vinyl ethers

A process for synthesizing energetic ethers, esters and acetals is disclosed that comprises reacting certain alcohols with certain alkenes or alkynes in the presence of mercuric or mercurous sulfate. The products obtained are particularly useful as plasticizers, monomers or prepolymers for propellant binder systems.

Process for preparation of energetic plasticizers

Fluoroalkyleneether silicate copolymers are synthesized by the polycondensation of a bis-dimethylcarbinol containing a fluoroalkyleneether segment and bis-(dimethylamino) methylvinylsilane. The copolymers are useful in applications, e.g., as seals and sealants, involving use temperatures ranging from about -90.degree. C. to 600.degree. C. They are particularly useful when blended with a fluorocarbon elastomer, enhancing the strength and low temperature flexibility of the elastomer.

Fluoroalkyleneether silicate copolymers

A perfluoroalkylene oxide dinitrile, an aromatic dinitrile N-oxide and an aromatic trinitrile are terpolymerized to obtain a poly(perfluoroalkylene oxide) oxadiazole containing pendent aromatic nitrile groups. The fluorinated polymer product can be cured with a polyfunctional nitrile N-oxide to provide elastomers that are particularly useful in aircraft applications involving use temperatures ranging from about -70.degree.F to about 400.degree.F. For example, the elastomers can be employed as fuel tank sealants, coatings, O-ring seals, diaphragms, and the like.
