A mailer type business form, an intermediate for the form, and a method of making the form are provided. The mailer type business form is constructed from a single ply sheet of paper and a small panel (less than one-quarter the size of the sheet) which cooperates with a quadrant of the sheet to provide a return envelope. The sheet is folded along orthogonal fold lines to provide four plies, a fifth ply being provided by the panel which cooperates with one of the plies to form the return envelope. The mailer is constructed by positively guiding the panel (preferably utilizing a tractor hole strip along one edge) into contact with predetermined adhesive strips on the single ply sheet, and then subsequently folding the sheet along the orthogonal fold lines.

A method is provided for constructing a mailer type business form in a continuous manner so that an easy opening tear strip is provided in both the outgoing and return envelopes. This allows not only the addressee of the outgoing envelope to readily remove its contents, but allows the addressor of the outgoing envelope--when the return envelope is received thereby--to readily retrieve the contents of the return envelope. This substantially enhances the utility of the ultimate mailer product. Desirably, the tear strips are formed by a slit and perforation in the bottom sheet of each of the outgoing and return envelopes, and within the mailer the tear strips are parallel to each other. An insert is also typically provided between the top sheet of the outgoing envelope and the top sheet of the return envelope, and is pasted to outgoing envelope at the left and right.

Method of making a mailer with tear strip on outgoing and return

A business form having a removable label associated with it is made from a paper ply and a piece of transfer tape. The adhesive face of the transfer tape is attached to the paper ply rear face with the side edges of the transfer tape between tractor openings in the paper ply. At least one die cut is formed in the paper ply front face to define, with adhesive from the transfer tape, at least one label, and preferably a plurality of labels. A perforation may be provided in the paper ply at the interiormost edge of the transfer tape, and at the tractor openings most remote from the transfer tape. The paper ply may be the top ply of a multi ply form. During manufacture of the form, the die cut area surrounding the lables is removed to expose the release portion of the transfer tape, and that part of the form remote from the transfer tape, as well as the labels, can be simultaneously printed as the form is fed through a printer utilizing the tractor openings.

A return mailer construction includes a first outer part, at least one intermediate part and a second outer part, wherein the first and second outer parts are used as both outgoing and return envelopes, the first outer part having a CB coating on at least a portion of an interior surface thereof, and at least one intermediate form part having a CF coating on at least a portion of a front face thereof. The first outer form part has an address window formed therein, a major portion of the window being separable from the first outer part upon opening of the mailer. The second outer part having a return envelope flap portion formed therein and foldable over at least a remaining portion of the address window in the first outer part. An alignment aperture is provided on the outer form part for alignment with a mark on the intermediate part, thereby insuring proper alignment of the form parts prior to impact printing variable information on the intermediate form part, through the outer form part. A related process is also disclosed.

Return mailer without fly sheet

A mailer type of business form having a carbonizing bond sheet with a carbon spot on one face, and an insert, is constructed so that the carbonizing bond sheet will remain within the outgoing envelope when the insert is removed. This is accomplished even though the carbon spot goes all the way to the end of the carbonizing sheet by providing thumb notches in the outgoing envelope plies and the carbonizing bond, but not in the insert. The carbonizing bond is stream pasted to the interior top ply of the outgoing envelope to maintain it within the outgoing envelope when the insert is removed. The mailer is constructed in a continuous manner from four vertically aligned webs of paper, with the interior webs having a width less than the top and bottom webs by an amount corresponding to the width of strips of adhesive along the sides of the business forms holding the top and bottom plies together. All the webs except the insert sheet web are thumb notched, and the carbonizing bond and insert web are simultaneously die cut.

Retaining a part within a business form

A document carrier assembly for processing a plurality of documents through a microfilming machine is provided which includes a web of paper having an upper and lower surface, at least the upper surface having a low tack adhesive layer applied thereon; a liner overlying the upper surface of the web and the low tack adhesive layer, the liner having a self-contained carbonless coating on an upper surface thereof; and a clear plastic film overlying the liner. The carrier assembly may be formed with a mirror image construction on the opposite side thereof to create a double sided carrier.

A business form (mailer) has top and bottom plies that are slightly larger than an insert ply. The insert ply is connected to the top and bottom plies along one lengthwise and one widthwise edge, but is free of connection at the other lengthwise and widthwise edges. Perforations in the insert ply parallel to the connected lengthwise and widthwise edges form a detachable portion, particularly a check. A check may be made of bond paper yet information printed on the check stub (between a lengthwise edge and perforation parallel to it) is transferred to the lower ply by a self-imaging spot disposed on the top surface of the bottom ply underneath the check stub.

A mailer type business form is provided which includes an outgoing envelope formed by a first sheet folded along a fold line to provide first and second panels each having three marginal edge portions, and a return envelope formed by a second sheet overlying the second panel and adhesively secured to the second panel inwardly adjacent the three marginal edge portions such that the second panel forms a rear panel of both the outgoing envelope and the return envelope. A removable tear strip is incorporated in the second panel and is defined by a slit formed in the second panel parallel to and adjacent one of the marginal edge portions, and a pair of parallel lines of perforations extending perpendicularly from opposite ends of the slit toward the fold line.

A mailer type business form includes a top ply with a cutout having an area and position comparable to an address area on a piece of mail. A second insert ply underlies the top ply including at the cutout. The insert ply has a localized coating of self-imaging material formed directly beneath the cutout and only in the area of the cutout. The cutout is preferably completely open, free of any material in it or covering it. However under some circumstances a patch of transparent material may cover the cutout. Other plies may also be included in the mailer including a return envelope, with a bottom ply cooperating with a top ply to define an out-going envelope.

A business forms mailer construction comprising an upper panel, at least one intermediate panel, and a lower panel; the upper panel is adhesively secured to the at least one intermediate panel, and the at least one intermediate panel is adhesively secured to the lower panel by glue lines, one of which extends along one side of the intermediate and lower panels. Also provided are a pair of slitter guide marks applied to one of the upper and lower panels, on either side of the glue line, so that by alignment of a slitting mechanism with the inner of the pair of guide marks, the mailer may be opened along one side for the insertion of one or more additional sheets. Alignment with the outer of the guide marks results in removal of a marginal portion of the mailer, but with the latter remaining sealed.

Business form assemblies are provided in continuous form, separated by transverse lines of perforations, each of said assemblies including a three-part form. In one embodiment, the intermediate and lowermost form parts include repositionable labels carried by carrier plies, and carbon transfer sheets are interleaved between the upper form part and the intermediate label, and between the intermediate carrier play and the lower label. In another embodiment, the carbon transfer sheets are eliminated and replaced by a carbonless transfer system including adjacent coatings of microcarbon capsules and carbonless resin coatings. In still another embodiment, three self stick, repositionable labels are provided wherein the upper and intermediate labels are carried by tissue plies and the lower label is carried by a conventional paper ply.

The form includes a pair of outer panels with an insert therebetween. Corresponding ends of the panels and inserts have registering marginal feed strips. The insert has an additional marginal feed strip extending outwardly of the panels at each of the opposite ends thereof. The insert is formed of heavier material than the panels. The transversely extending edges of the insert are set back from the transverse edges of the panels, the latter being adhesively secured one to the other. Problems in tenting are thus avoided.

Apparatus and methods for forming mailers with inserts

A continuous business form has a carrier sheet formed of conventional paper (i.e., without a wax or silicone coating) and a forms portion adhered to the carrier sheet by release adhesive (transfer adhesive) adhered to the underside of the forms portion. The forms portion may be peeled from the carrier sheet for application and adherence to another surface while the carrier sheet may be used as paper, for example, for use in impact printing processes.

The business or other institution is provided with two complementary series of blank form parts. One of these contains one or more elements of a form of construction (multiple ply, window, glassine-patched window, glue spots, patches or strips) which would make it incompatable for use with today's commercially predominate non-impact printers. The other contains none of such elements and is suited for being run through a business computer-controlled non-impact printer for the purpose of printing of variable information thereon, and of being thereafter assembled and united increment for increment with form parts from the first series, using presently available assembling and uniting apparatus, whereupon the united forms may be successively severed into thus individualized communications and dispatched to their respective addresses.
