A system includes a processor and a memory. The memory stores instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform operations including sending, via a transmitter, a primary video stream corresponding to a particular channel to a media device. The operations further include sending a secondary video stream to the media device. The secondary video stream is associated with a lower quality level than the primary video stream. Transmission of a frame of the secondary video stream is delayed with respect to transmission of a corresponding frame of the primary video stream.

System and method of providing video content

A system includes a processor and a memory. The memory stores instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform operations including sending a primary multicast video stream and a secondary multicast video stream to a media device. The secondary multicast video stream is limited to intra-coded frames (I-frames) extracted from the primary multicast video stream. Transmission of each intra-coded frame (I-frame) of the secondary multicast video stream is delayed with respect to transmission of a corresponding I-frame of the primary multicast video stream. The delay is based on an amount of writing time to satisfy a buffer threshold of a video content buffer at the media device to prevent a noticeable time shift of video displayed by the media device when the media device switches from outputting the secondary multicast video stream to outputting the primary multicast video stream.

A method and apparatus for providing a route recommendation are disclosed. For example, the method obtains network topology information, wherein the network topology information comprises a plurality of underlying subnetwork types for a network. The method creates a cost model for the network, and receives a request from a user for a connection to be supported by the network. The method provides the route recommendation for supporting the connection by applying the cost model.

A method includes receiving, at a first node of a data network, a message indicating a failure of a communication link of the data network. The message is received at the first node from a second node of the data network. The method includes determining an alternate route from the first node to a data source of the data network. The alternate route includes a third node as an upstream node of the first node. A method of providing routes through heterogeneous subsystems in an optical network is disclosed, which includes generating, using a processing device, a reachability matrix based on subnetwork information; and generating, using the processing device, a topology associated with the optical network using the reachability matrix. The method also includes determining, using the processing device, a shortest path through the optical network using the reachability matrix and a cost model graph; and displaying, using a graphical user interface, subsystems associated with the shortest path, regeneration locations associated with the shortest path, wavelengths associated with the shortest path, the topology, and the shortest path. Reachability matrices spanning multiple domains in an optical network

Method and apparatus for providing a control plane across multiple optical network domains is described. In one example, topology and resource discovery is employed in a transport network having a plurality of control domains. Topology information for each of the control domains is summarized to produce summarized topology information. The summarized topology information for each of the control domains is exchanged among the control domains. At each of the control domains, the summarized topology information of each of the control domains is combined to produce combined topology information. The combined topology information is passed among network elements within each of the control domains using an intra-domain routing protocol.

Method and apparatus for providing a control plane across multiple optical network domains

A method of providing video content is disclosed that includes receiving video content associated with a television stream from a video source at a server of a video distribution network. The method also includes sending a primary multicast video stream corresponding to the video content to a video distribution network entity via an Internet Protocol (IP) network. The primary multicast video stream is associated with a first bandwidth. Further, the method includes sending a secondary multicast video stream to the video distribution network entity via the IP network. The secondary multicast video stream is associated with a second bandwidth. The primary multicast video stream and the secondary multicast video stream are accessible to a set-top box device via the video distribution network entity in response to a channel change request that indicates the television stream. In addition, the frames of the secondary multicast video stream may be delayed with respect to their counterparts in the primary multicast video stream. This insures that, after sufficient buffering of frames of the primary multicast video stream, when the set-top box device switches from the secondary multicast video stream to the primary multicast video stream there will be no noticeable time shift.

Systems and methods are described that that dynamically configure high-speed data link lightpaths between access routers and backbone routers at geographically dispersed locations to reassign traffic when a backbone router fails or is removed from service. Embodiments reduce the quantity of backbone router ports used in dual backbone router-homed networks.

1:N sparing of router resources at geographically dispersed locations

In a tool for use by network planners in designing metropolitan IP aggregation networks, several optimization methods are integrated into a tool. A k-means algorithm is used to choose access packet switch locations. A dual-k-means algorithm is used to choose the backbone switch locations. Each access packet switch is dual homed to two backbone packet switches using two diverse paths. The diverse path configuration is found using a maxflow-mincost algorithm on a modified fiber map topology. The link topology connecting the backbone packet switches to each other is designed using a heuristic that creates a skeleton network topology and then adds express links one by one, testing each link to assure reduced overall network cost. The resulting network topology is then improved upon by local search.

A resilient load balancing method uses fixed paths and a fixed path-splitting strategy to enable ingress routers to efficiently reroute traffic after a failure. An off-line management system computes a set of fixed paths and a set of splitting ratios for routing demand from ingress routers to egress routers, with sufficient capacity to meet demands under each failure scenario. That data is then used by the ingress router to reroute demand after observing a failure.
