A hydraulic pump powering system includes a mobile vehicle, a first electric current generator device, and one or more electric pump motors. The mobile vehicle has first and second prime movers. The first electric current generator device is disposed onboard the mobile vehicle and is configured to be mechanically coupled with the first prime mover to convert movement created by the first prime mover into first electric current. The one or more electric pump motors are configured to receive the first electric current to power a hydraulic pump. The second prime mover is configured to generate movement that is converted into a propulsive force that propels the mobile vehicle. The one or more electric pump motors are configured to receive the first electric current in order to power the hydraulic pump to pump a fluid into a pumping location located off-board the mobile vehicle.

System and method for powering a hydraulic pump

An assembly includes a motor; a second motor; a planetary transmission coupled to the motor and the second motor, and a spool coupled to the transmission. The spool has an interior volume for receiving the motor, the second motor and the transmission, and the motor and the second motor are disposed or disposable entirely within the spool. The motor and the second motor are capable of being operated such that one of the motors is speed controlled, and the other motor is torque controlled.

A system () for ensuring the quality of lubricating oil in an engine of a locomotive without the need for specialized diagnostic and fluid handling systems on the locomotive. A test portion () of lubricating oil is removed from the engine and is analyzed at an oil analysis center () to determine an oil quality parameter (). The oil quality parameter is used as an input to a calculator () to determine a quantity of oil () that must be replaced by fresh oil during a current maintenance outage in order to ensure that the engine oil quality will remain acceptable throughout a forthcoming operating period. In this manner, a complete change-out of the lubricating oil may be delayed or avoided. The oil replacement decision and quantity is communicated to a service center () via a communications link such as the Internet () prior to the arrival of the locomotive at the service center. The used oil may be removed from the engine using a portable transfer device and mixed with fuel in a fuel storage tank for subsequent refueling of other locomotives.

Lubricant management method for a vehicle

Disclosed herein are methods for detecting a water leak in a locomotive engine cooling system comprising numerous components, each being a potential source of leakage of water. The method typically comprises performing at least one inspection providing an indication of a water leak from an engine cooling system of the locomotive. The step of performing at least one inspection may comprise at least one of several steps including performing a visual inspection to determine if water is leaking from a portion of the cooling system external to the engine; performing a visual inspection of exhaust of the engine to detect an indication of water vapor in the exhaust; performing a visual inspection to detect an indication of water leaking into an intake air manifoldof the engine; performing an engine oil analysis to detect water in the engine lubricant; reviewing a fault log history for the locomotive; and checking a level of a cooling system sight glass. The method allows for the isolation of potential sources of the water leak from one another so as to prevent false positive leak identification caused by transient water flow between the potential sources. If an engine cylinder assembly is a component identified as a potential source of the water leak during the water pressurization test, the method enables further testing to confirm leakage at such cylinder assembly, before undertaking the costly and time-consuming process of removing the cylinder assembly from the engine. Cylinder assemblies can be tested for leaks by performing an air leak test disclosed herein.

Method of detecting a water leak in a locomotive

A method of controlling fuel injection timing in a compression ignition engine including at least one cylinder. The method includes monitoring a parameter indicative of a commanded operating speed of the engine corresponding to an engine throttle notch and monitoring a parameter indicative of the actual operating speed of the engine. When the commanded engine speed exceeds the actual engine speed, the fuel injection timing for the engine may be advanced to reduce emissions.

A system for detecting conditions indicative of substandard performance of cylinders in an internal combustion engine includes an engine control unit disposed in operable communication with the engine and a computer disposed in informational communication with the engine control unit. A method for utilizing the system includes comparing fuel requirements of the engine operating under power of all cylinders and under the successive arrest of each of the cylinders or sets of cylinders. The process is repeated until each cylinder or set of cylinders is arrested and all of the data can be compiled and considered to determine the performance of each cylinder or set of cylinders. The system measures the required fuel with all cylinders operating and enables a recommendation to be made with respect to corrective or maintenance measures that should be undertaken with respect to the isolation of the individual cylinder(s) which may be determined to be weak or non-functioning.

System and process for detection of weak or non-functioning cylinders in engines

A system for monitoring the condition of a vehicle has at least one wireless transmitter in on the vehicle, and in communication with the vehicle computer system. Data representative of operating parameters generated during the operation of the vehicle is downloaded to the transmitter, which transmits the data to a wireless receiver positioned proximal to a path of travel of the vehicle. The receiver is linked to a processor for transmission of the data to the processor for storage and processing if necessary. The system may also include at least one sensor, positioned proximal the path of travel, for detecting a physical phenomenon emanating from at least one vehicle component. The sensor generates a signal, which is transmitted to the processor. The processor is capable of analyzing the signal generating data indicative of operating condition of the vehicle component. The sensor, and/or receiver, mounted to a structure positioned proximal the path of travel of the vehicle.

A system and method for monitoring the effectiveness of a heat exchange unit, which comprises at least one or more sensors for taking a plurality of temperature readings of a heated fluid, a coolant and fluids passing through the heat exchange unit. The temperature readings are transmitted and/or entered into a processor capable of comparing the temperature readings and calculating a measure of effectiveness of the heat exchange unit. The processor is in communication with a database that maintains at least one predetermined parameter limit associated with the effectiveness of the heat exchange unit. The processor analyzes the data and is also capable of generating a signal indicative of the health or condition of the heat exchange unit.

A fuel injection system for a diesel engine operating at retarded fuel injection timing includes a fuel cam configured to increase a fuel injection pressure and decrease a fuel injection duration, thereby improving fuel atomization and combustion in a plurality of engine cylinders and improving an indicated efficiency of the engine and reducing exhaust emissions. The fuel cam is oriented in a phase relationship with a compression stroke top-dead-center position to accommodate the retarded fuel injection timing and to optimize an engine brake efficiency and performance.

High injection rate, decreased injection duration diesel engine fuel system

An exemplary embodiment of the invention is a method of controlling fuel injection timing in a compression ignition engine including at least one cylinder. The method includes monitoring engine throttle position and change. One of an acceleration and a load ascending transient operating mode is detected in response to the monitoring of throttle position and change. Fuel injection timing for the at least one cylinder is controlled in accordance with a predetermined timing schedule in response to the detection of one of an acceleration and a load ascending transient operating mode. A system for implementing the method is also disclosed.

A method and system for determining degradation of fuel pump performance in a locomotive having an internal combustion engine is provided. The method allows for monitoring a signal indicative of a fuel value delivered by the fuel pump and for adjusting the value of the monitored signal for deviations from an estimated nominal fuel value due to external variables to generate an adjusted fuel value. The method further allows for comparing the value of the adjusted fuel value against the nominal fuel value to determine the performance of the pump.
