One aspect of the invention pertains to a device for mixing and dispensing fluids, which generally includes a housing; a mixing chamber having a first inlet for introducing a first fluid into the mixing chamber, a second inlet for introducing a second fluid into the mixing chamber, and an outlet through which fluid may exit the mixing chamber; and a valving rod received within the mixing chamber and movable between an open position, in which the first and second inlets are in fluid communication with the mixing chamber, a cleaning position, in which the valving rod substantially seals closed the first inlet but does not seal closed the second inlet, and a closed position, in which the valving rod substantially seals closed the first and second inlets.

Device for mixing and dispensing fluids

A mold assembly for making a molded foam article generally includes a housing having an internal cavity and an opening into the cavity, a movable support member movable between an inner position and an outer position, an object supported by the support member and having a three-dimensional shape, and a closure. A method for making a molded foam article generally includes moving the support member to the outer position, positioning a film web over the object to form a substantially convex envelopment, moving the support member to the inner position while maintaining the film web in contact with the object to reconfigure the substantially convex film envelopment into a partially concave film envelopment, and dispensing a predetermined amount of a foamable composition into the hollow space provided by the concave envelopment.

Method and mold assembly for making a molded foam article

The invention is a thermoplastic film having a heat resistant coating. The film is particularly useful in the preparation of bags and associated packaging systems that are used for protecting and packaging articles. Typically, the heat resistant coating has a melting range that is greater than the melting temperature of the thermoplastic film and exceeds the temperature of the heat generated during foam formation. As such, packaging films and bags that are prepared in accordance with the invention help prevent foam-in-bag cushions from fusing together. Particularly useful heat resistant coatings include ink varnishes and resins that are solvent-based, water-based, or energy cured.

Heat resistant foam-in-bag packaging

A packaging system for producing a foam-in-bag cushion upon demand includes a bag of flexible plastic film and defining therein an enclosed space which is vented to the outside of the bag, a foam precursor packet positioned at a predetermined location within the enclosed space in the bag and being formed of a barrier material. The packet includes first and second compartments with a first frangible seal separating the first and second compartments which when ruptured will permit the contents of the compartments to be mixed to form a foam cushion and a second frangible seal between one of the compartments and the enclosed space in the bag. A first foam precursor component is contained in the first compartment of the packet and a second foam precursor component is contained in the second compartment of the packet. The frangible seals have a peel strength of at least about one pound per inch and less than about twelve pounds per inch and more particularly a peel strength of about one pound per inch to about seven pounds per inch. The frangible seals are formed by providing bands of printed area on the facing surfaces of the material forming the packet which is arranged in a matrix of printed and unprinted areas. The printed areas prevent the surfaces from being joined by heat sealing and the matrix is such that a frangible seal of the desired peel strength is formed.

Foam in bag packaging system and method for producing the same

A foam-in-bag packaging system and method of forming the same is provided in which a bag of flexible plastic film material includes superposed panels joined around their peripheral edges to define an enclosed space which is vented to the outside of the bag by venting perforations in the panels, a packet or pouch of barrier material capable of maintaining foam precursor components in a stable, unreacted state for an extended time period is positioned in the enclosed space in the bag adjacent one end thereof and secured from movement therefrom, the packet has first and second compartments therein separated by a first frangible seal extending across the packet and first and second foam precursor components contained respectively in the first and second compartments, the packet has a second frangible seal between one of the compartments and the enclosed space in the bag, the bag being folded along spaced transverse fold lines into a relatively compact form and being folded along a fold line coincident with the first frangible seal to form a mechanical barrier between the first and second compartments of the packet, and a detachable label holding the bag in its folded, compact form.

A method of producing a polyurethane foam comprising the steps of dissolving rapidly and substantially completely a non-condensible non-reactive gas in a liquid isocyanate component or a liquid polyol component or both while the isocyanate and polyol components are maintained separate from one another, while controlling the flow of the non-reactive gas to maintain a predetermined dissolved gas to liquid ratio, and while maintaining the component in which the nucleating agent is being dissolved under pressure sufficient to maintain the gas in solution and to hold substantially constant the dissolved gas to liquid ratio and mixing the previously separated isocyanate and polyol components together while reducing the pressure to nucleate the dissolved gas in the isocyanate and polyol components and while impinging liquid streams of the composition together thereby enhancing mixing and permitting the mixture to foam so as to form a fine celled polyurethane foam. An apparatus for producing the same is also provided.
