Disclosed is a method of a molding system, the method comprising: determining whether a change in a thermal condition of an extruder is required based on a thermal condition of a zone of a melt passageway of the molding system, wherein setting of a threshold temperature of an extruder heater is adjusted based on a non-extruder sensor positioned away from the extruder but positioned proximate to the melt passageway, the melt passageway is also positioned external of the extruder, so that the non-extruder sensor is not negatively influenced by heat retained in the extruder.

Platen-mounted, post-mold cooling apparatus and method includes structure and/or steps for handling molded parts in an injection molding machine having a fixed platen, a moving platen, a core half, and a cavity half. A take off device coupled to the fixed platen is configured to remove molded parts from either the core half or the cavity half. A cooling device coupled to the moving platen is configured to cool the molded parts carried by the take off device. Preferably, the take off device extracts the just molded parts from the mold's core half and then moves linearly outboard of the mold halves. The subsequent movement of the moving platen to close the mold in the next molding cycle causes the cooling device's pins to engage the molded parts in the take off device part carriers. When the moving platen opens again, the molded parts are extracted from the part carriers by the cooling device pins. When the moving platen is fully open, the cooling device is rotated to eject the cooled parts from the machine.

A shooting pot actuator for an injection molding machine having two plates carrying pusher rods for pushing against injection plungers within the shooting pots. The plates are mounted outside the mold and the clamp unit, and the pushers extend through bores in the stationary platen of the clamp unit to reach the injection plungers. The actuator reduces the cost and complication of mold design and production, and permits simplified adjustment of the injection plunger stroke.

The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method of cooling molded preforms. The apparatus and method make advantageous use of air amplifiers to create a flow of cooling air over the molded preforms. In a first embodiment of the present invention, the air amplifiers are mounted to a part removal and cooling robot. In a second embodiment of the present invention, a plurality of air amplifier stations are positioned about an index block to cool the molded preforms. In a third embodiment of the present invention, a vacuuming system is provided to improve the adherence of the air flow created by the air amplifiers to the exterior surfaces of the molded preforms. In a fourth embodiment of the present invention, the air amplifiers are mounted to a movable plate and each amplifier has an internal bore sized to receive a molded preform to be cooled.

A failsafe device, or pressure relief mechanism, for a shooting pot actuator in an injection molding machine. The shooting pot actuator has a multiple pusher rods mounted on one, or more, plates. Moving the plate holding the pusher rods depresses the shooting pot injection pistons and injects molten material into a number of mold cavities. To avoid damage to the machine from the pusher rods if an injection piston seizes, a failsafe device is used to mount the pusher rods to the plates. A shearing member is interposed, or sandwiched, between first and second apertures. Typically, the shearing member is a plate that, in normal operating conditions, blocks rearward movement of the pusher rod. However, when a predetermined shear force is applied to the shear plate, the shearing member shears and the pusher rod retracts within the channel, thereby alleviating the pressure. The failsafe device can be paired with a seizure detection system, using a laser beam, that detects piston and valve gate seizure, and provides appropriate notification or control signals.

The present invention relates to a device for unloading and cooling molded parts from an injection molding machine having an index turret block rotatable about a central axis. The device comprises a cooling turret block rotatable about an axis substantially parallel to the central axis, which cooling turret block has a plurality of faces. At least one of the faces includes a plurality of nozzles for applying a cooling fluid to surfaces of the molded parts while the molded parts are resident on the index turret block. At least two of the other faces of the cooling turret block include a plurality of receiving tubes for receiving molded parts from the index turret block for further cooling. The cooling turret block of the present invention is capable of cooling multiple sets of molded parts.

The present invention relates to a device for cooling molded parts and for transporting the molded parts from a receiving position to a holding/ejecting position. The device of the present invention has particular utility with an index molding machine having a rotary turret block with at least two movable mold halves thereon. The cooling device includes a cooling station assembly having a plurality of blowing tubes for applying a cooling fluid to external surfaces of molded parts, a take-off plate having a plurality of holders for receiving cooled molded parts and a connecting plate connecting the take-off plate and the cooling station assembly. The connecting plate is connected to the take-off plate by a pivotable connection and is connected to the cooling station assembly by a rigid connection. The connecting plate is movable along an axis substantially parallel to one of the faces upon which the molded parts to be cooled and removed are positioned. The device further includes a linkage assembly for causing the take-off plate to move between a receiving position and a holding/ejecting position and vice versa. Movement of the take-off plate causes the connecting means to move along the first axis which in turn causes the cooling station assembly to move from a non-cooling position to a cooling position and vice versa. A process for using the device of the present invention as part of a process for molding parts is also described.
