An apparatus for producing a honeycomb body from a stack having a plurality of at least partially structured sheet metal layers forming a plurality of channels through which a fluid can pass, including a mould having an internal shape substantially corresponding to an external shape of a honeycomb body to be produced, a wrapping device for holding a stack at least partially structured sheet metal layers at a central region thereof, the wrapping device being pivotally disposed about an axis for wrapping the stack, and a holding device having positioning elements at least partially insertable into channels formed in the central region of the stack for maintaining a structural configuration in the central region of the stack during a wrapping of the stack.

Apparatus for producing a honeycomb body

A catalyst carrier body for an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine, especially of a motor vehicle, includes a matrix having an inflow surface, an outflow surface, a periphery, and a multiplicity of catalytic surfaces around which exhaust gas can flow. The catalytic surfaces have front regions and form flow-through passages. The outflow surface has a shape, at least in an inner region thereof, causing the front regions to be exposed and not covered outwardly, toward the periphery, by others of the catalytic surfaces. The exposed front regions have lengths, at least in a partial region of the outflow surface, amounting to from 55% to 90% of the length of the flow-through passages, for increasing an outward dissipation of heat. As a result, outwardly open heat radiating areas are guaranteed for an improved emission of heat to the surroundings or into the exhaust system.

To manufacture a honeycomb body, it is proposed that at least one stack is layered up from a plurality of at least partly structured sheet metal layers. Each stack is folded over about a bending line such that a sheet metal pack is formed having a curved first end area and a second end area. The second end area has a first end section and a second end section. A first end face of the first end section forms a first angle with a central plane, and a second end face of the second end section forms a second angle with the central plane, wherein the first angle is smaller than the second angle. The sheet metal packs are held by looping devices disposed in a mold, and the sheet metal pack is looped into a honeycomb body by rotation of the looping devices.

Method for manufacturing a honeycomb body with a large number of fluid permeable channels

A honeycomb body conducting a fluid, especially a honeycomb body for an exhaust gas catalyst. The honeycomb body has an inflow area and an outflow area having channels to be cross flown by the fluid. The disclosed honeycomb body has near the inflow and the outflow area respectively a section with reduced heat conductivity, which has recesses formed in the wall of at least some channels of the honeycomb body.

A method for producing a honeycomb body having a plurality of at least partially structured sheet metal layers and formed with a plurality of channels through which a fluid can pass, comprises the steps of forming a stack by layering a plurality of at least partially structured sheet metal layers such that the channels are formed and then introducing the stack into a mould. The stack is held in the mould with a wrapping device and with positioning elements, which at least partially reach into the channels in a central region of the stack. The wrapping device is pivotable around a winding axis and has at least two winding bars located essentially parallel to the winding axis and extending along a longitudinal direction of the channels. The at least two winding bars engage the stack at a respective exterior surface at the central region of the stack. The stack is wrapped until a predetermined degree of wrapping of the stack is attained, while maintaining, in the central region of the stack, a structural configuration having structures disposed relative to one another and formed by the at least partially structured sheet metal layers.

Method for producing a honeycomb body

The exhaust gas system has an exhaust gas catalytic converter, through which exhaust gases of an internal combustion engine can flow for catalytic conversion of the exhaust gases. The catalytic converter is disposed between two exhaust gas line segments, each forming one line connection with the catalytic converter and each contacting a stop face of the exhaust gas catalytic converter. A bracing element engages at least one of the exhaust gas line segments and braces the catalytic converter between the exhaust gas line segments. The system is particularly suitable for economical retrofitting of exhaust gas catalytic converters in motor cycles.
