Two conveyors for stacks of paper sheets are coupled to each other for movement back and forth between a first position in which one of the conveyors receives one or more stacks and the other conveyor is relieved of the stack or stacks thereon, and a second position in which the one conveyor is relieved of the stack or stacks thereon and the other conveyor receives one or more stacks. In order to expel air from the stacks on the conveyors the foremost portions of the stacks are clamped by reciprocable rams to the respective conveyors and the thus clamped stacks are caused to move along stationary squeegees which bear against successive increments of the stacks behind the respective rams while the stacks, the respective rams and the respective conveyors move away from the stack-receiving positions.

Apparatus for expelling air from stacks of paper sheets and the like

Apparatus for transporting paper stacks has two spaced-apart transporting units each having a supplying conveyor which can accept stacks from a maker or feeder, an intermediate conveyor which can accept stacks from the supplying conveyor, and a receiving conveyor which can accept stacks from the intermediate conveyor for delivery to a packing machine. A third receiving conveyor is disposed between the receiving conveyors of the two transporting units and serves to deliver stacks to a third packing machine. The intermediate conveyors can be linked to each other for simultaneous movement transversely of the transporting units so that one of the intermediate conveyors registers with the third receiving conveyor while the other intermediate conveyor receives one or more stacks from the supplying conveyor of the corresponding transporting unit. This enables the third receiving conveyor to alternately deliver to the corresponding packing machine stacks which are furnished by the supplying conveyors of both transporting units. One of the intermediate conveyors can be driven to move transversely of the transporting units.

Apparatus for transporting paper stacks

Apparatus for supporting the core of a reel of convoluted paper in a winding machine has two trunnions which extend into the end portions of the core from opposite ends of the reel and are surrounded by ring-shaped stops which are normally closely adjacent to the respective end faces of the reel therebetween. The trunnions and the respective stops are movable axially toward and away from the core and each trunnion is surrounded by a ring-shaped sensor which is biased against the respective end face of the reel so that the distance between the sensor and the corresponding stop denotes the width of the gap between the respective end face of the reel and the corresponding stop. Each sensor is connected with a discrete ring-shaped cam by several pins which extend through the corresponding stop and each cam is tracked by one arm of a lever another arm of which can actuate a signal generating device when the width of the gap between the stop and the corresponding end face of the two trunnions exceeds a preselected value. The signal generating device can generate a visible and/or audible signal and/or arrest the prime mover which winds the web from or onto the reel between the two stops.
