A method of matching signal transmission between two electronic devices connected to one another with a physical interface and each have a transmitter and a receiver, wherein signals are transmitted from the transmitter of one device along a transmission link to the receiver of the other device and wherein the transmission link has at least two signal lines (+, &#x2212;) for differential transmission of the signals including A) detecting signal values on the receiver of the first device separately for each of the two signal lines (+, &#x2212;), B) evaluating a mismatch between the signals from the two signal lines (+, &#x2212;) on the receiver of the first device on the basis of the detected signal values, and C) changing one or more parameters of the transmitter in the second device for at least one of the two signal lines (+, &#x2212;), wherein at least A) and C) are performed iteratively until a predetermined termination criterion is satisfied.

A method starts and operates a computer with an operating system held on a replaceable storage medium. The method includes: checking the authenticity of the replaceable storage medium and/or checking a user's authority for executing the operating system held on the replaceable storage medium. The operating system held on the replaceable storage medium is executed if the replaceable storage medium is authentic and/or the user is authorized to use the operating system. Checking the authenticity of the replaceable storage medium and the user's use authority ensures the integrity of the operating system. Thereby, modifications to the operating system and to the computer are made more difficult. The invention also relates to a computer and a replaceable storage medium which are suitable for carrying out the method.

A memory subsystem has at least one first mass memory with a solid-state memory medium, at least one second mass memory with a moving read/write head or moving memory medium, and at least one control unit for controlling the first mass memory and the second mass memory. A method of operating the memory subsystem includes receiving a request for storing or reading data, defining first and second memory regions in the first and second mass memories, respectively, and transmitting first and second subrequests to the first and second memory regions, respectively.

A backplane for use in a push-in rack for peripherals includes slots with plug connectors that connect with peripherals which have been pushed into the push-in rack, and at least one further plug connector that connects the backplane to a control apparatus. The backplane further includes a monitoring device operable to determine, for each connected peripheral, whether a peripheral is compatible with the connected control apparatus and, if the peripheral is incompatible, the monitoring device activates the respective optical signaling device assigned to the slot for the incompatible peripheral. Mass memory device and method for operating a mass memory device

A data ring has two or more disconnectable nodes and a monitoring device for monitoring and driving the nodes. Appliances that communicate with one another can be connected to the nodes. The data ring is distinguished by an additional node that can be connected by the monitoring device. The additional node allows a fault state to be produced deliberately in the other nodes. The deliberate production of a defined fault state in the data ring and the defined propagation of this defined fault state in concatenated data rings results in states being produced in all of the nodes which correctly initiate fault handling routines in the appliances which are connected to the nodes. The fault handling routines are provided as standard and provide the appliances at the node with knowledge of the failure of the faulty node or of the addition of a new appliance at a node.

A portable orientation system which, when for example the human sense of vision fails, can make information gathered from the surroundings available to another human sense. The portable orientation system has a sensor unit for selectively sensing information on the surroundings which is normally sensed by human senses. A signal processing unit is connected to the sensor unit and processes the signals of the sensor unit. A control module controls sensing options and/or processing options and/or output options of the sensor, the signal processing unit and the output unit. The portable orientation system further includes a power supply unit.
