Described herein are printing inks that are safe for direct contact with food. The inks contain colorants and other substances which comply with regulations governing the amounts of substances determined to be safe in the event one or more of the ink-containing substances were to migrate into foods or beverages, The inks exhibit resistance to removal. Also described are sets of inks. The inks provide wide color gamut.

Direct food contact inks

The present invention provides water-based ink and coating compositions having a high renewable resin content. The ink and coating compositions of the invention comprise equal to or greater than 65% (w/w) renewable resins, based on the total combined weight of the resins. Renewable resins derived from gum rosins are preferred. The ink and coating compositions of the present invention exhibit physical properties (e.g. adhesion and resistance) that are as good as, or better than, current commercially available inks (e.g. acrylic based inks not containing renewable material).

Water-based inks with high renewable content

The present invention provides water-soluble or water-dispersible polyester resins prepared by depolymerizing a terephthalate plastic material in an alcoholysis/glycolysis reaction, and re-polymerizing the product by reacting with a polybasic acid and/or anhydride. The polyester resins of the invention contain 70% to 95% by weight of the terephthalate material, based on the total weight of the composition. The polyester resins of the present invention are useful as dispersants, for example in pigment preparations, and as binders in let-down varnishes, inks, coatings, etc, and as adhesion promoters in aqueous-based inks.

Described herein are printed laminates. The laminates include a first substrate having an applied layer of an ink or coating composition that includes a self-crosslinking acrylic polymer having has a glass transition temperature of 0&#xb0; C. or greater, a coalescent, and water; a second substrate positioned to configure the applied layer between the first substrate and the second substrate; and an adhesive bonding the first substrate to the second substrate. Also described is a process for making such laminates. In one aspect, the applied layer of ink is a reverse printed layer, in which the applied ink layer is highly compatible with the adhesive with which it comes in contact.

Film lamination inks

A method of extending the gamut of standard 4 color process printing is presented. The method thus yields various novel process printing ink sets. According to exemplary embodiments, an extended color gamut can be provided without requiring the addition of a sixth or seventh primary ink to the existing 4-color ink set. In some embodiments, an enhanced gamut can be achieved by changing the colors of the four basic primary inks and only adding a fifth primary ink. This may be done, for example, by shifting the hue of two or three of the CMY primaries and adding an additional primary. Using only five process inks thus provides, for example, the typical packaging printer with more open print stations for spot color printing or for overprint varnish application. In another illustrative embodiment, a sixth process color may be added to the inventive five color ink set.
