A technique facilitates in-service inspection of a variety of assets while in the field. The system and technique may be used for the in-service inspection of various tubular elements, such as deep-water oil and gas risers and flow lines. This approach enables a rapid and reliable inspection for cracks or other defects in assets after those assets have become operational in the field.

In-line inspection and crack detection

A system and method for inspecting offshore and onshore tubular or piping assets is described. The system and method utilizes an inspection tool comprising a communication system, a sensor, a long distance travel system, and a localized travel system, allowing fast long distance travel until the inspection tool approximates an area of interest, followed by actuating the localized travel system to accurately inspect the area of interest.

Inspection tool

A method for performing ultrasonic inspection to a pipe is described, comprising: introducing an in-line inspection tool assembly into a pipe, wherein the in-line inspection tool assembly comprises a gel reservoir and an ultrasonic inspection tool flanked by a pair of batching pigs, wherein the gel reservoir holds a first gel couplant; and driving the in-line inspection tool assembly along the pipe while performing ultrasonic inspection; wherein a gel slug is formed between the pair of batching pigs, and the gel slug facilitates the ultrasonic inspection.

Gel pigging improvement

A system and method for displaying inspection data collected from a furnace is disclosed. The system comprises a storage device for storing the inspection data. The system also comprises a computer programmed to partition the inspection data at a plurality of data markers so as to correlate the inspection data to the physical geometry of the furnace. Each of the data markers identifies the location of a physical feature of the furnace (such as a bend, an external raised surface, cross-over piping, a thermal well, a weld, a flange, a schedule change and/or a diameter change). Preferably, the computer is also programmed to generate a display of the partitioned inspection data, wherein the display is a two-dimensional or three-dimensional representation of the tube segments of the furnace. This display may then be used to visually detect problem areas within the furnace. Various exemplary embodiments of the system and associated method are provided.
