An electronic throttle control unit includes an air bypass channel having a removable obstruction that opens in response to receiving an electronic throttle control fault signal and thereby allowing the vehicle a limp home condition. The throttle plate defaults to a fully closed position upon engine-off to substantially prevent evaporation and escape of hydrocarbons from the intake manifold to the atmosphere.

An electronic throttle control having a piezo actuator that, when energized, will deliver a force to the throttle gear sufficient to free it from a stuck condition.

Piezo electronic throttle control actuator

A speed control apparatus for an internal combustion engine including a poppet valve seat and a poppet valve pintle assembly disposed coaxially for variably regulating the flow of air into the engine across the valve seat. The pintle is axially positioned by a stepper motor actuator responsive to an engine speed sensor and electronic controller. The controller varies the axial position of the pintle in accordance with a programmed algorithm to provide any desired engine speed, and especially a fixed engine speed, under a range of engine loads. The invention eliminates the need for a governor, rotary mechanical throttle, and cable or mechanical linkages, and is especially useful for small engine applications such as in powering a portable electric generator, yard equipment, or outboard motor.

Throttle control for a small engine

An engine air control valve includes a throttle body having an intake air passage and a throttle valve rotatable in the passage between minimum and maximum air flow positions about a valve axis generally perpendicular to the direction of air flow through the passage. The air passage is defined by an internal wall of the throttle body, the wall including a pair of control surfaces spaced from the valve periphery with gradually increasing clearance on opposite sides of the valve axis in a low flow range. At least one of the control surfaces is interrupted by a recess forming a recessed portion of more rapidly increasing clearance extending essentially from a minimum to an intermediate air flow position of the throttle valve. The recess modifies the base flow curve of the throttle body to provide greater air flow over the low flow range of the throttle valve.

Modified flow throttle bore

A throttle lever assembly for controlling the air intake of a throttle body of an internal combustion engine includes a return cam secured to an end of a throttle shaft. The return cam, formed of a planar metal plate, has a channel disposed about a portion of its periphery for receiving an accelerator cable. The channel is formed of alternately offset fingers having fluke-shaped end portions to provide substantially continuous walls of the channel and a cable seat formed of alternately offset fingers. In addition, the return cam may include a cruise stud extending axially from the outer surface of the cam return, an idle stop lever and a wide open stop lever.

Throttle lever assembly

A throttle lever assembly for controlling the actuation of a throttle valve in an internal combustion engine has a throttle shaft pivotally secured to a housing. An idle stop lever is mounted to and radially extends from an end portion of the shaft for engaging a depending member of the housing to stop the rotation of the throttle lever assembly at an idle position. A return cam formed of thermoplastic/thermoset material is overmolded the end portion of the shaft and a portion of the idle stop lever. The molded return cam has a channel disposed about its cam surface for receiving an accelerator cable, a stud extending axially from the outer surface of the cam return, and a spring retainer extending axially from the inner surface of the return cam for maintaining a return spring in coaxial relationship with the shaft. The return cam may also include an idle stop member to replace the discrete idle stop lever. This fully integrated return cam is secured to the shaft by overmolding the return cam to the shaft which has grooves disposed transversely there across which function to prevent axial and rotational translation of the return cam relative to the shaft.
