The specification relates to a microscopy system. The microscopy system includes a first laser emitting a first laser pulse, the first laser pulse being a pump beam; a second laser emitting a second laser pulse, the second laser pulse being a probe beam; time delay components for delaying the probe beam, wherein the time delay components delay the probe beam by 0.3 ps to 5 ns relative to the pump beam; an optical device for combining the pump beam and the delayed probe beam into a combined laser pulse, the combined laser pulse having a reduced focal spot size; a galvanometer scanning system for delivering the combined laser pulse to a focal spot in a focal plane, wherein the reduced focal spot size of the combined laser pulse initiates a stimulated emission of a targeted molecule, the stimulated emission having dipole-like backscatter, and a detector for detecting the dipole-like backscatter.

Orthogonal confocal stimulated emission microscopy

Systems and methods for hyper-resolution beyond the diffraction limit of optical microscopes for applications in spectroscopy, absorption and lithographic photochemical patterning are described. These systems are based on interference of a pump pulse and a Stokes laser pulse which interfere to localize the population of an excited vibrational state in an area that is smaller than the scanning resolution of the microscope. Another (interfering) Stokes pulse has an annular shape at focus and destructively interferes with the the Stokes laser pulse. This destructive interference causes narrowing of the population distribution of the vibrational excited state well below the diffraction limit, which in turn localizes the population of the central electronic excited state by a separate actinic laser pulse having a lower energy than the ground state excitation energy of the molecule. A stepped photolithography system uses two photomasks to produce photoresist images capable of printing features smaller than 10 nm.

Method and system for raman, fluorescence, lithographic, stimulated emission and photochemical imaging beyond the diffraction limit

Systems and methods for probing a Raman signature of a sample with a resolution exceeding the diffraction limit are described. These systems, called GASSE (Gain Saturated Stimulated Emission) and iGASSE (interferometric GASSE), are detecting a Raman signal produced in a sample located at the focal spot of a Gaussian pump pulse. Two additional pulsed laser beams (Stokes beams), a central Stokes beam having a Gaussian beam profile and another Stokes beam having an annular beam profile, are also focused to the focal spot. The spatial and temporal phases of the laser pulses are adjusted to produce destructive interference over most of the temporal width of Stokes pulses, which causes emission from the central Stokes beam to narrow well below the diffraction limit. A two-dimensional image of the sample is produced by scanning the combined beams across the sample. The system may find applications in biomedical and semiconductor technology.

Method and system for stimulated Raman microscopy beyond the diffraction limit

A CARS system and method for probing a Raman signature of a sample are described. A short femtosecond pulse from one or more lasers is split into two pulses, a stimulus pulse and a probe pulse, whereby the probe pulse is time-delayed with respect to the stimulus pulse. Both pulses can be phase- and polarization-modulated. The stimulus pulse excites a vibronic level in the sample and the probe pulse probes molecular Raman transitions in the sample. A difference in the signals with and without excitation can be used to determine on which molecule a bond is most likely located. This will allow an accurate and sensitive determination of the presence of specific molecules in the sample. The system and method can be used to analyze biological samples and to discriminate between molecules having overlapping Raman signatures.

Method and system for spectral analysis of biological materials using stimulated cars

A grating structure with a dielectric coating is disclosed that operates efficiently away from the blaze angle in low order with a high diffraction efficiency and high wavelength dispersion. Such grating structure can be employed in Littrow configuration to provide, for example, cavity feedback in excimer lasers.

Grating device with high diffraction efficiency

A lamellar volume grating operating in reflection and transmission and providing a substantially wavelength- and polarization-independent diffraction efficiency is disclosed. The lamellar grating has an approximately rectangular grating profile with a height-to-width ratio of the grooves or &ldquo;teeth&rdquo; advantageously greater than 2. The grating operates preferably in first order and can be implemented as an immersion grating. In particular, the lamellar volume grating described herein can be employed in an optical multiplexer/demultiplexer arrangement with small overall dimensions.

Lamellar grating structure with polarization-independent diffraction efficiency

A multi-wavelength external cavity laser system is disclosed, wherein an array of individual laser elements is placed in a shared laser cavity for all wavelengths that is defined by a free space grating, an optional reflector, and a single relay lens. Laser radiation from the cavity can be externally modulated at each wavelength and outputted as an overlapping beam having substantially all the wavelengths produced by the laser elements through a single fiber or as an array of wavelength-separated beams. A modular design facilitates the addition and/or repair of individual or several channels.

A multi-wavelength external cavity fiber laser system is disclosed. Laser radiation from the cavity can be externally modulated at each wavelength and outputted as an overlapping beam having substantially all the wavelengths produced by the laser elements through a single fiber or as an array of wavelength-separated beams. The fiber laser can include an intra-cavity etalon that allows all wavelength to be tuned simultaneously.

Tracking apparatus and method for use with combinatorial synthesis processes

A grating structure useful for WDM multiplexer/demultiplexer applications is described. The grating structure has a substantially polarization-independent diffraction efficiency of a predetermined useful wavelength range, for example, between 1.4 and 1.6 &mgr;m. Each grating period includes a triangular section and a flat-topped section, with the width of the flat-topped section between 20 and 50% of the grating period. The disclosed grating structure can be formed in any material that is substantially transparent over the useful wavelength range and used in either a Littrow and a Littman-Metcalf configuration.

Diffractive structure for high-dispersion WDM applications

A laser wavelength meter determines the unknown wavelength of a laser by measuring the phase difference between two orthogonally polarized beams derived from the laser. The orthlogonally polarized beams propagaic along two optical paths of different length as defined, for example, by a polarizing beam splitter or a stepped reflector with a defined step height. An in situ reference laser of known wavelength allows calculation and monitoring of the path difference between the two optical paths.

Disclosed herein is an X-ray lithography system having a long life target. The life of the conventional target in X-ray generating systems for use in X-ray lithography systems is increased by providing means by which a single laser pulse can be provided to the same spot a plurality of times. In addition, new target designs are provided which are mechanically moved to allow laser pulses to be provided to adjacent points over a large surface area. One type of target is a cylindrical drum which is helically rotated to allow the laser pulse to intersect at all points along the helix of the drum. A second type of long life target is a long continuous strip in which a strip is moved from a feed reel to a take-up reel. The strip may be within a cassette.
