A welding apparatus includes a workpiece housing having a window therethrough and having a welding access therethrough for a welder to an interior of the workpiece housing. The workpiece housing is metallic with a heat insulation on an internal surface thereof. A lamp heat source is directed through the window and at the workpiece in the interior of the workpiece housing. A gas source delivers a controllable flow of a shielding gas to the interior of the workpiece housing. A temperature sensor senses a temperature of the workpiece within the interior of the workpiece housing. A feedback controller controls the power to the lamp heat source responsive to the temperature of the workpiece. To perform welding, the workpiece is placed into the interior of the workpiece housing so as to have its temperature sensed by the temperature sensor, and the gas source is operated to envelope the workpiece in the shielding gas. The workpiece is heated by powering the lamp heat source responsive to a setpoint input and to the temperature of the workpiece. The workpiece is welded using a welder operating through the welding access.

A multifunctional weld fixture is provided having a base receiving a component and a plurality of locator tabs disposed around its outer edge. A circumferential array of expansion feet are movably attached to the top surface of the base. A disk-shaped wedge is disposed in sliding engagement with the expansion feet. A cover supports a portion of the component and seals against the component to create an enclosed plenum. The same fixture may be used to expand the component to compensate for shrinkage after the weld is compete.

A heating apparatus and method for pre-weld heat treating, welding and post-weld heat treating a superalloy article in a single enclosure while avoiding oxidation of the article. The enclosure is preferably equipped with a one-way valve that permits the escape of gases, but otherwise seals the enclosure to prevent the ingress of air during welding and heat treatment as a result of thermal gradients induced when the article is inductively heated. To provide access to the article and a device used to weld the article, the enclosure is equipped with gloves by which the welding device and the article can be manipulated while a nonreactive atmosphere is fully maintained within the enclosure and the article is inductively heating.

Heating apparatus for a welding operation and method therefor

An assembly and method for welding an article, such as an air-cooled superalloy airfoil of a gas turbine engine nozzle. The method entails inserting a fixture into a cooling passage of the airfoil. The fixture is configured to close a first opening to the passage through which the fixture is inserted into the passage. The fixture is also configured to introduce a gas into the passage through a longitudinal row of ports. A through-wall crack in the airfoil is weld repaired while the gas flow is maintained to the cavity at a rate that sufficiently pressurizes the passage to prevent the molten filler material from entering the passage through the crack, while allowing the filler material to fill the crack.
