A portable system for determining the amount of Vitamin D generated by a user includes a computer processing unit. A database communicates with the central processing unit and stores body type information regarding a user to be monitored by the system. A geographic positioning system sensor communicates with the computer processing unit for determining a geographic location of the system. The central processing unit determines a skin darkness, and a sun intensity as a function of the output of the geographic sensor to calculate a real time Vitamin D manufactured amount for the user as a function of the body type data, skin darkness and an amount of skin exposed, and displaying an accumulated Vitamin D manufactured amount for a selected time period at a display.

Then data associated with the operational component is monitored. The process of instrumenting business activity monitoring can be referred to as auto instrumentation.

Film applicator tools are provided which have at least two arcuate edges which are sufficiently flexible and resilient to permit application of adhesive films to smooth surfaces without leaving air bubbles, creases or other defects. The tools are molded of polymeric materials which have hardness values effective to permit the application of smooth and uniform pressure without tearing or abrading the films.

A scraper tool of one-piece construction is conformable for use in scraping various surfaces and is made up of a generally arched body portion having an intermediate handle section to be gripped by the user and scraper blades at opposite ends of the body portion provided with edges extending in opposite directions transversely across the width dimension at each end so that the application of force in either lengthwise direction to the body portion will cause one of the blades to scrape the materials away from the surface. In an alternate embodiment, the scraper tool may include a handle extension pivotally connected to the body portion and provided with a brush on the handle extension.

A portable substrate transmittance meter includes a remote transmitter and a remoter receiver for measuring a light transmittance of a substrate that does not have an edge available for sliding a base meter thereover, for example a fixed window on a vehicle. The remote transmitter is releasably attached to one side of the window with a donut shaped magnet resting thereagainst. The remote transmitter includes a light transmitter for emitting a predetermined light signal through a center of the donut shaped magnets and on through the fixed window. The remote receiver is place on the other side of the fixed window opposite the remote transmitter. Donut shaped magnets of the remote receiver cause the remote receiver to attract towards the remote transmitter in proper alignment therewith. A light receiver of the remote receiver receives the transmitted light for effecting a transmittance measurement of the fixed window.

A disinfecting system (10) for an applanating surface (12) of an applanation tonometer (16) includes an absorbent, deformable wick (18), a vial (40), and a holder (20). In use, the wick (18) is saturated with a disinfecting solution, then the applanating surface (12) of the tonometer (16) is brought into contact with the saturated wick (18) for approximately 10 to 15 minutes.

A hinge for the temples of eyeglasses and the like, comprises interfitting convex and concave conical hinge members held in engagement by elongated elastic members. The elastic members allow relative movement of the hinge members under stress and then return the members to their normal fitting relationship when the stress is removed. The elastic members, when worn or weak, are easily replaceable by the user.

A high speed document manipulator providing high resolution digital video-signal output. A document transport moves the documents at a high speed for entrance, flip-over and exit, and at about one-fifth that speed for video scanning while moving for producing the video signal. Servo control provides a forward and back initial motion to obtain top to bottom scanning. The servo circuit is electrically protected. The video sensor is firmly coupled to the optical system. An elongated light source, elliptical reflector and 'cool' mirror provide an elongated transverse illuminated area on the document as it moves through.
