An aqueous thermosetting primer composition includes a polyurethane polymer, an acrylic polymer polymerized in a wax having crosslinkable functionality, and a crosslinking component that is reactive with the wax and at least one of the polyurethane polymer and the acrylic polymer. The polyurethane polymer has a glass transition temperature of 0&#xb0; C. or less. The acrylic polymer has a glass transition temperature that is at least about 20&#xb0; C. higher than the glass transition temperature of polyurethane resin. The invention further provides a composite coating having as a primer layer a cured layer of the primer composition of the invention and having at least one topcoat layer.

Low VOC waterborne primer with high film smoothness

A method for providing cured coating films free of popping defects. The method requires the application to a substrate of at least 2.0 mils/50.8 microns of a uncured curable coating composition comprising an anti-popping component (a), a film-forming component (b), and a crosslinking component (c), wherein anti-popping component (a) has from 12 to 72 carbon atoms, is substantially free of any heteroatoms, is not a crystalline solid at room temperature and comprises a mixture of two or more structures selected from the group consisting of aliphatic structures for anti-popping component (a), aromatic-containing structures for anti-popping component (a), cycloaliphatic-containing structures for anti-popping component (a), and mixtures thereof, at least one of the two or more structures being a cycloaliphatic-containing structure or an aromatic-containing structure. The coated uncured substrate is cured to provide a cured film free of popping defects with an average film build of at least 2.0 mils/50.8 microns.

Method of providing cured coating films free of popping defects

The invention provides curable waterborne coating compositions comprising an aqueous dispersion (A) comprising an organic binder component (A1) comprising at least 5% by weight of a reactive component (a), based on the total weight of organic binder component (A1), and at least one crosslinking component (B). The reactive component (a) is substantially free of any heteratoms and is a not a crystalline solid at room temperature and comprises from (i) 12 to 72 carbon atoms, and (ii) at least two functional groups. The curable waterborne coating compositions of the invention show significantly improved pop resistance while also providing improved chip resistance, weathering resistance, flexibility, and/or scratch & mar resistance.

Waterborne coating compositions containing monomeric difunctional compounds

A coating composition contains solid particulates of a mixture of an aminoplast crosslinking agent, a solid polymer having functionality reactive with the aminoplast crosslinking agent, and a crystalline, carbamate-functional additive. The crystalline, carbamate-functional additive has a melting point of at least about 30&#xb0; C. and is up to about 15% by weight of the powder coating composition.

The curable coating compositions of the invention comprise a particulate component having at least one binder component (a) which is a solid at 75&deg; F./24&deg; C., and an additive component (b). Powder coating composition for automotive exterior coatings with compatibility with other coatings and resistance to yellowing include a film-forming material such as a polyepoxide and an acid-functional crosslinker that is a reaction product of 1,3,5-tris(2-hdyroxyethyl)isocyanurate and a cyclic anhydride.

The invention relates to an economical method of making a polymer having reduced VOCs and coating compositions containing such polymers. In one embodiment, the method of invention requires providing a reactant mixture (a), providing a solvent mixture (b) comprising a reactive component (c) which is substantially free of any heteroatoms and is not a crystalline solid at room temperature and comprises (i) from 12 to 72 carbon atoms, and (ii) at least two functional groups, and subjecting the reactant mixture (a) in the solvent mixture (b) to polymerization conditions sufficient to polymerize reactant mixture (a) to provide a mixture (d) of a polymer (a&prime;) in solvent mixture (b), wherein reactive component (c) under the polymerization conditions is substantially nonreactive: (1) with the components of reactive mixture (a), (2) in the polymerization of reactant mixture (a) and (3) with the polymer (a&prime;). Coating compositions of the invention comprising polymers made by the disclosed method provide low VOCs without any reduction in application or performance properties.

Method for obtaining coating compositions having reduced VOC

The invention provides an aqueous coating composition containing a dispersed, emulsified, or dissolved material (organic compound, resin, or polymer), in which the material is dispersed, emulsified, or dissolved with a water-soluble, carbamate-functional material. The invention further provides a coating prepared from the coating composition and a coated substrate, especially an automotive substrate, having the coating thereon.

Waterborne coating compositions containing materials dispersed with water-soluble carbamate materials

The invention provides curable coating compositions comprising an aqueous dispersion comprising a stabilizing resin (P1) and a compound (P2) comprising functional groups reactable with a crosslinking agent. Compound (P2) is dispersed into stabilizing resin (P1). The coating compositions of the invention may further comprise an optional crosslinking agent (P3) which may or may not be dispersed into stabilizing resin (P1). In a particularly preferred embodiment, both the stabilizing resin (P1) and compound (P2) will comprise functional groups which are carbamate or are convertible to carbamate.

Aqueous dispersions for coating compositions

The present invention provides a coating composition containing a two-stage polymer emulsion. The two-stage emulsion polymer contains composite polymeric particles of a first stage polymer prepared from about 0.25% to about 5% by weight monomer having at least two polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated groups, about 2.5% to about 10% by weight hydroxyl monomer, preferably at least about 50% by weight of non-functional monomer of hydrophobic monomer, and preferably without addition of any acid-functional monomer; and a second stage polymer having a theoretical glass transition temperature of at least about 50&deg; C. prepared using, by weight, about 25% to about 50% by weight hydroxyl monomer, about 3% to about 9% carboxylic acid monomer, and preferably at least 25% by weight of non-functional monomer of hydrophobic monomer;. The composite polymeric particles have a theoretical glass transition temperature of not more than about 30&deg; C., preferably not more than about 0&deg; C., and include from about 0.8% to about 2% by weight of carboxylic acid monomer.
