Cataphoretic electrodeposition baths for coating ferrous metal articles, particularly untreated ferrous metal articles, are disclosed. The baths comprise aqueous dispersions of cationic electrodepositable resins and lead ions which are introduced into said bath by the addition of water-soluble lead compounds. Coatings electrodeposited on ferrous metal articles from such baths have excellent corrosion resistance.

A quaternary ammonium group-containing material which is obtained from reacting a polyepoxide with an amine containing at least one acyclic group of about 8 to 30 carbon atoms and optionally an amine containing an alkylarylpoly ether moiety is disclosed. The resins are useful as pigment grinding vehicles and in the formulation of pigment paste, particularly pigment paste with high pigment loadings. When formulated into cationic electrodepositable compositions, the pigment grinding vehicles provide for cured electrodeposited coatings of excellent corrosion resistance, particularly over untreated and oily steel.

A quaternary ammonium group-containing material and its method of preparation are disclosed. The quaternary ammonium group contains at least one organic group which contains an acyclic group of at least 8 carbon atoms and also contains a group of the structure ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl. The quaternary ammonium group-containing materials are useful as pigment grinding vehicles and in the formulation of pigment paste, particularly pigment paste with high pigment loadings. When formulated in cationic electrodepositable compositions, the pigment grinding vehicles provide for cured electrodeposited coatings of excellent corrosion resistance, particularly over untreated and oily steel.

Curable resinous compositions containing primary and/or secondary amine groups which are non-volatile under curing conditions and containing alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated moieties in conjugation with carbonyl moieties which are reacted with a primary and/or secondary amine which are volatile under curing conditions are disclosed. Novel, chain-extended adducts formed from reacting high molecular weight polyepoxides and polyester polyols containing at least two alcoholic, primary hydroxyls per molecule are disclosed. The chain-extended polyepoxides are adducted with a secondary amine and made dispersible in water with acid. The water-dispersed resins can be applied to a wide variety of substrates by cationic electrodeposition. When compared to resins which are not chain extended, the resins of the invention have higher rupture voltages, improved film-forming properties and deposit as films with improved flexibility.
