A delayed coking and dedusting process in which dust laden heavy oil derived from solid hydrocarbon-containing material, such as oil shale, coal or tar sand, is preheated in a furnace and thermal cracked in a retort to yield light oils and middle oils. Preferably, steam is injected into the dust laden heavy oil before the dusty oil is heated in the furnace to minimize coking in furnace tubes and furnace outlet lines. The thermal cracked dusty oil leaves a residual dust enriched, coked material that can be combusted to provide a portion of the solid heat carrier material for use in retorting oil shale, coal or tar sand.

Delayed coking and dedusting process

Disclosed is a method for controlling the flame front during the in situ combustion of a subterranean carbonaceous stratum which involves monitoring the extent and movement of said flame front to determine the location of one or more segments of the flame front which exhibit unfavorable combustion characteristics, and injecting one or more gases into the vicinity of one or more of said segments to control and optimize the combustion in said segment.

Method for controlling underground combustion

Disclosed is a method for reducing the porosity of a zone within mass of unretorted rubblized oil shale comprising locating the zone; providing fluid communication to the zone; introducing grout slurry by fluid communication to the zone so as to deposit slurry and reduce porosity. Also disclosed is an improved method for the subterranean in situ retorting of oil shale comprising establishing a retorting zone containing a rubblized mass comprising oil shale; establishing an essentially planar flame front within the retorting zone; introducing oxygen containing gas into the retorting zone to support combustion at the flame front thereby forming hot combustion gases which effect retorting of the oil shale; locating an area of the flame front which advanced ahead of the essentially planar flame front; and introducing grout slurry to the advanced area to reduce gas permeability and retard further advancement of that area of the flame front.

Method for reducing porosity of rubblized oil shale

A method is herein disclosed by which a polymerizable monomer or a mixture thereof can be economically and efficiently converted to polymeric substances with a high yield catalyst in a vapor phase polymerization process using a stirred-bed, quench-cooled, horizontaL reactor together with essentially total reactor off-gas recycle and melt finishing. The method is further characterized by being essentially isobaric at least up to the polymer finishing steps.

Apparatus for the vapor phase polymerization of at least one polymerizable monomer comprising: (a) a horizontal reactor of substantially circular cross-section containing a centrally-located drive shaft extending longitudinally through said reactor to which are attached a plurality of adjacently located paddles, which paddles cause essentially no forward or backward movement of the particulate matter contained in said reactor and extend transversely within and to a short distance from the internal surfaces of said reactor, said reactor being divided into two or more individually gas-composition-controllable and polymerization-temperature-controllable polymerization compartments, by one or more dividing structures so constructed to control gas intermixing and movement of said particulate matter between said compartments; (b) driving means for said drive shaft; (c) one or more reactor off-gas outlets in each of said compartments spaced along the topward part of said reactor; (d) one or more vapor recycle inlets in each of said compartments spaced along the bottomward portion of said reactor; (e) one or more catalyst addition inlets in each of said compartments spaced along said reactor; (f) a plurality of quench liquid inlets spaced along the topward part of said reactor whereby quench liquid can be introduced into said two or more compartments; and (g) takeoff means for said particulate matter at one end of said reactor.
