Described are coating material compositions comprising an isocyanate group-containing component, a hydroxyl group-containing component, and a zinc (1-methylimidazole)bis(2-ethylhexanoate) complex. Also described is the use of a zinc (1-methylimidazole)bis(2-ethylhexanoate) complex as a catalyst system for the urethane reaction in coating material compositions.

Select metal salts of mono and di aromatic sulfonic acids and aliphatic sulfonic acids are effective latent acid catalysts in coating compositions capable of acid catalyzed crosslinking and provide coating compositions with lower cure temperature and quicker cure times than encountered with conventional sulfonic acid catalysts, have excellent storage stability and avoid drawbacks of epoxy and amine blocked sulfonic acid catalysts.

Described herein are metal amidine complexes in combination with a second compound useful as catalysts in a number of polymerization reactions, including polyurethane and epoxy polymerization reactions. Also described herein are various coating compositions and methods of using same for coating substrates using the metal amidine complexes in combination with a second compound.

Amino resins, e.g., urea-formaldehyde and melamine-formaldehyde thermosetting resins, are cured with a latent catalyst which is a thermally-decomposable adduct of an aromatic sulfonic acid (e.g., p-toluene sulfonic acid) and a bicyclic oxazolidines (e.g., 1-aza-3,7-dioxa-5-ethylbicyclo (3.3.0) octane. The coating compositions can contain other conventional co-reactants, such as polyols, polyacids, alkyd resins, polyester resins, epoxies, acrylics and the like. Coatings containing the amino resin, co-reactant, and latent catalyst have an acceptable viscosity stability, cure rapidly at temperatures lower than some other latent catalysts, and produce films with no wrinkles.
