Steric features inherent in the three dimensional disposition of atoms in molecules can be represented as multiplets using a defined set of steric descriptors. The resulting multiplets can be encoded in a compressed form of bitstring known as a bitmap. Such bitmaps can be generated in compressed form and used to compare individual conformers or ensembles of conformers of molecules to each other without decompression. Such comparisons are useful in molecular similarity analysis, in molecular diversity analysis, in database searching, and in conformational analysis.

Method for characterizing and analyzing 3-D shapes of molecules utilizing steric multiplets

A footrest mechanism is disclosed which is adapted to be coupled to a chair to allow a footrest () to be moved between an extended position and a retracted position. The footrest mechanism includes a mounting member () having a guide pin () and a release member () having an L-shaped slot () configured to receive the guide pin. The L-shaped slot () includes a generally horizontal portion () extending from a generally vertical portion () at least partially defined by a stop wall (). The release member () also includes a handling tab () which facilitates the operation of the footrest mechanism () for movement of the footrest () between extended and retracted positions.

The use for biological screening purposes of a subset (library) of a large combinatorially accessible chemical universe increases the efficiency of the screening process only if the subset contains members representative of the total diversity of the universe. In order to insure inclusion in the subset of molecules representing the total diversity of the universe under consideration, valid molecular descriptors which quantitatively reflect the diversity of the molecules in the universe are required. A unique validation method is used to examine both a new three dimensional steric metric and some prior art metrics. With this method, the relative usefulness/validity of individual metrics can be ascertained from their application to randomly selected literature data sets. By the appropriate application of validated metrics, the method of this invention selects a subset of a combinatorial accessible chemical universe such that the molecules of the subset are representative of all the diversity present in the universe and yet do not contain multiple members which represent the same diversity (oversample). The use of the neighborhood definition of a validated metric may also be used to combine (without oversampling the same diversity) any number of combinatorial screening libraries.

The method of this invention identifies distinctive items of information from a larger body of information on the basis of similarities or dissimilarities among the items and achieves a significant increase in speed as well as the ability to balance the representativeness and diversity among the identified items by applying selection criteria to randomly chosen subsamples of all the information. The method is illustrated with reference to the compound selection requirements of medicinal chemists. Compound selection methods currently available to chemists are based on maximum or minimum dissimilarity selection or on hierarchical clustering. The method of the invention is more general and incorporates maximum and minimum dissimilarity-based selection as special cases. In addition, the number of iterations required to select the items is a multiple of the group size which, at its greatest, is approximately the square root of the population size. Thus, the selection method runs much faster than the methods of the prior art. Further, by adjusting the subsample size parameter K, it is possible to control the balance between representativeness and diversity in the compounds selected. In addition, the method can mimic the distributional properties of selections based on hierarchical clustering and, at least in some cases, improve upon them.

A fluid dispensing valve for a liquid container having a pouring spout is formed by an inner sleeve axially connected to the spout of a liquid container. The other end of the inner sleeve is closed and provided with wall outlet ports. An outer sleeve slidably surrounds the closed end portion of the inner sleeve for covering and uncovering the inner sleeve wall ports. The outwardly flared end of a funnel-type tube secured to the periphery of the outer sleeve projects beyond the closed end of the inner sleeve for entering a port of a receiving vessel at its other end portion. The valve is opened by axial force applied to the inner sleeve opposite its closed end which moves relative to the outer sleeve and uncovers the wall ports. Releasing the axial pressure on the inner sleeve allows a spring interposed between a shoulder or the inner sleeve and adjacent end of the outer sleeve to bias the latter toward and cover the inner sleeve ports.

A fluid pressure opened reclosable pouring spout for a flexible container is formed by a sleeve assembly axially inserted into the exit end of the pouring spout for normally closing the latter. The sleeve assembly comprises a first sleeve bonded to the inner surface of the pouring spout of the exit end portion which contains an annular inwardly projecting flange-like wall slidably receiving a piston sleeve valve normally sealing with the outer end of the first sleeve and biased to an open position by a spring or weight when the walls of the container are manually squeezed, to apply liquid pressure against the closed end of the piston sleeve valve. The wall of the piston sleeve valve is provided, adjacent its outer end, with a circumferential row of apertures for discharging liquid when the piston sleeve valve is opening. The inward end of the piston sleeve valve is longitudinally slotted in circumferential spaced relation for inserting the sleeve valve into the wall sleeve.

A bidirectional current-time integrator device comprises a shunt for connection in a circuit and an integrating circuit having inputs connected to opposite ends of the shunt through a switching device. The integrating circuit integrates an input signal from the shunt with time to produce a stream of pulses at a frequency proportional to the current with each pulse representing a given unit of current time. A bidirectional counter assembly counts the pulses from the integrating circuit in one direction when the current is in one direction, and in the opposite direction when the current reverses. The integrator circuit includes means for storing any partial unit of current time accumulated whenever the current direction changes and adding that partial unit to the subsequent accumulation of the signal when the current changes back to the original direction. The device may be used as a battery discharge state monitor.
