An atomic inertial interferometer comprises a laser that emits a CW beam; a modulator that modulates the CW beam; a filter and delay mechanism that receives the modulated beam, and includes a first pathway and a second pathway longer than the first pathway; a comb generator that receives the modulated beam, and produces a frequency comb; and a comb drive coupled to the comb generator to generate a multiple of a comb repetition rate, the comb drive including a HF source coupled to a bandpass filter. A vacuum cell holds a sample of cold atoms. The frequency comb counter-propagates with respect to the modulated beam to provide velocity slicing of the cold atoms such that a given temperature distribution of the cold atoms is sliced into a plurality of narrow temperature distributions that are probed individually and in parallel, to extract an interference signal from the narrow temperature distributions.

High-contrast atomic inertial interferometry with frequency comb or comb-like light source

A thermal metamaterial device comprises at least one MEMS thermal switch, including a substrate layer including a first material having a first thermal conductivity, and a thermal bus over a first portion of the substrate layer. The thermal bus includes a second material having a second thermal conductivity higher than the first thermal conductivity. An insulator layer is over a second portion of the substrate layer and includes a third material that is different from the first and second materials. A thermal pad is supported by a first portion of the insulator layer, the thermal pad including the second material and having an overhang portion located over a portion of the thermal bus. When a voltage is applied to the thermal pad, an electrostatic interaction occurs to cause a deflection of the overhang portion toward the thermal bus, thereby providing thermal conductivity between the thermal pad and the thermal bus.

Thermal metamaterial for low power MEMS thermal control

A sensor system comprises a laser source that emits a pump beam at a first wavelength and a probe beam at a second wavelength, and an optical means for receiving the pump and probe beams. The optical means is operative to generate a plurality of light beams, each having a different frequency, from the pump and probe beams. One or more cells receive the light beams from the optical means and allow passage of the light beams therethrough, with the cells containing alkali atoms. A dichroic filter is configured to receive the light beams from the cells. The dichroic filter separates pump beam light and probe beam light from the light beams. A detector array receives the probe beam light from the dichroic filter. The detector array includes a two-dimensional array of photosensors that map out transmission of respective light beams corresponding to the probe beam light through the cells.

Wideband RF spectrum real-time monitor

A continuously tunable radio frequency (RF) sensor system is provided. The system includes a pump laser system that includes first and second pump lasers, at least one frequency modulator to modulate frequencies of first and second laser light from the pump lasers to first and second select frequencies, a switch system to selectively pass one of the first and second laser light, an amplifier to amplify the passed laser light, a frequency doubler to double the frequency of the amplified laser light to generate pump light. A laser source lock system is in communication with the pump laser system to ensure a frequency of the pump light is referenced to atoms in a vapor cell and provide a probe light. The pump light and probe light are transmitted through the vapor cell. A detector measures the probe light that passed through the vapor cell.

Continuous tunable RF sensor using rydberg atoms with high transmissivity

Systems and embodiments for an integrated photonics tensor magnetometer are described herein. In certain embodiments, a system includes a plurality of magnetometers. The system also includes a laser carrier wafer coupled to each of the plurality of magnetometers that commonly distributes one or more lasers to each of the magnetometers in the plurality of magnetometers. Additionally, the system includes a plurality of photodetectors that detect light emitted from the laser carrier wafer and the plurality of magnetometers. Further, the system includes one or more processors that execute computer-executable instructions that cause the processor to monitor and control operation of the one or more lasers and calculate a magnetic field gradient based on the detected light from the magnetometers.

In an example, an optical gimbal is described, the optical gimbal comprising: a pulse generator configured to generate at least two coherent beam splitting pulses; a first optical beam director configured to tilt the vector of the beam splitting pulses by an angle &#x3b8;; an atom source configured to allow the beam splitting pulses to manipulate trapped atoms within the atom source; a processor configured to receive the angle &#x3b8;, and control the pulse generator and the beam director; a detector coupled to the atom source configured to measure a final population of the atoms in different states.

Optical gimbal

A device includes a substrate and nanoscale fin formed from a first material, a RF emitter that emits energy in a range of radio frequencies, and a waveguide formed from a second material. The device further includes a bichromatic directional coupler configured to couple pump and probe laser light into the waveguide. The waveguide is positioned proximate to the nanoscale fin along a coupling length such that the pump laser light propagating within the waveguide is coupled into the nanoscale fin from evanescent wave overlap along the coupling length. The pump laser light causes the first material to absorb the probe laser light when energy emitted by the RF emitter is at one or more frequencies dependent on a magnetic field. The device further includes a processor configured to determine a magnetic field strength of the magnetic field based on an identification of the one or more frequencies.

Quantum vector magnetometer based on nanoscale fin waveguide

Apparatuses and methods for a four port atomic gyroscope are disclosed. Because of its four ports, a four port atomic gyroscope has an output separate from an input so as to increase sensitivity of the atomic gyroscope. Thus, smaller changes in rotation rate around a center axis of an optical waveguide loop of the four port atomic gyroscope can be detected.

A chip scale atomic clock (CSAC) includes a temperature stabilized physics system and a temperature stabilized electronics circuitry electrically coupled to the temperature stabilized physics system. Atomic clocks utilize an optical signal having a frequency component. The temperature stabilization increases frequency stability. The temperature stabilized physics system includes a vapor cell and a magnetic field coil, and is enclosed in a magnetic shield. When an ambient temperature of a chip scale atomic clock increases, fluid is extended away, due to thermal expansion, from at least one reservoir towards or away from a thermally isolated subsystem in at least one of the temperature stabilized electronics circuitry and the temperature stabilized physics system.

Apparatus and method for a vapor cell atomic frequency reference

In one embodiment, a method is provided. The method comprises: spin polarizing alkali atoms in a cavity; shifting resonant frequencies of the cavity at a rate proportional to a magnitude of a magnetic field incident upon the cavity; reflecting modulated right hand circularly polarized light and modulated left hand circularly polarized light from the cavity; transforming the reflected modulated right hand circularly polarized light to reflected modulated vertically polarized light, and the reflected modulated left hand circularly polarized light to reflected modulated horizontally polarized modulated light; generating a first error signal having an amplitude proportional to the shift in a resonant frequency corresponding to the reflected modulated vertically polarized light and a sign indicative of whether a frequency of the reflected modulated vertically polarized light is above or below the corresponding resonant frequency; generating a second error signal having an amplitude proportional to the shift in a resonant frequency corresponding to the reflected modulated horizontally polarized light and a sign indicative of whether a frequency of the reflected modulated horizontally polarized light is above or below the corresponding resonant frequency; adjusting a carrier frequency of the modulated right hand circularly polarized light in response to the first error signal; adjusting a carrier frequency of the modulated left hand circularly polarized light in response to the second error signal; and generating a measured Larmor frequency.

System and method for a cavity magnetometer using a pound-drever-hall detector

A fully reciprocal atomic interferometric gyroscope is provided. The fully reciprocal atomic interferometric gyroscope includes an atomic chamber, a plurality of lasers, a controller and measurement sensor. The atomic chamber is used to hold an atom cloud. The plurality of lasers are selectively positioned to selectively direct laser beams into the atomic chamber. The controller is configured to control the plurality lasers to initially cool the atom cloud to a point where at least one optical lattice can be formed that is used to move wave function halves of atoms of the atom cloud along split wave function paths that form an interferometer cycle. The measurement sensor is configured to conduct a phase readout of a wave function upon the completion of at least one interferometer cycle around the split wave function paths.

Fully reciprocal atomic interferometric gyroscope

An atomic interferometric accelerometer comprises a laser that emits a pulsed beam at a first frequency, an electro-optic modulator that receives the beam, and a vacuum cell in communication with the electro-optic modulator. The electro-optic modulator outputs a first optical signal corresponding to the beam at the first frequency and a second optical signal having a second frequency different from the first frequency. The vacuum cell has a chamber for laser cooled atoms. The vacuum cell receives the optical signals such that they propagate in a direction that passes through the atoms. A piezo mirror retro-reflects the optical signals back through the vacuum cell in a counter-propagating direction. The piezo mirror is driven with substantially constant velocity during a beam pulse, thereby imparting a Doppler shift to the retro-reflected optical signals to create two non-symmetric counter-propagating lightwave pairs. One of the lightwave pairs supports interferometry while the other is non-resonant.

Atomic interferometric accelerometer with enhanced vibrational stability

In one embodiment, a chip scale atomic sensor is provided. The chip scale atomic sensor includes a body that defines at least one sensing chamber. The body includes a thermal isolation die mounted to the body. The thermal isolation die is disposed in a location that communicates with the at least one sensing chamber. The thermal isolation die includes a substrate defining a frame portion and an isolated portion and a plurality of tethers mechanically coupling the isolated portion of the substrate to the frame portion. The thermal isolation die also includes an atomic source mounted on the isolated portion of the substrate, and a heating element mounted on the isolated portion and configured to heat the atomic source.

Embodiments described herein provide for a method of launching atoms in an atom interferometer. The method includes determining a direction of the total effective acceleration force on the atoms, controlling a direction of launch of the atoms for measurement in the atom interferometer based on the direction of the total effective acceleration force, and obtaining measurements from the atoms.

Systems and methods for eliminating multi-path errors from atomic inertial sensors are provided. In certain embodiments, a system for performing atom interferometry includes a vacuum cell containing multiple atoms and a first plurality of lasers configured to trap the atoms within the vacuum cell. The system further includes a second plurality of lasers configured to impart momentum to the atoms and direct the atoms down multiple paths, wherein a primary path in the multiple paths has a first and second component that converge at a converging point, wherein a diverging part of the primary path in which the first and second components are diverging is asymmetrical with respect to a converging part of the primary path in which the first and second components are converging, such that only the first and second components converge at the converging point wherein other paths do not converge at the converging point.
