An apparatus and method are disclosed that allow for downhole expansion of long strings of rounded tubulars, using a technique that expands the tubular from the top to the bottom. The apparatus supports the tubular to be expanded by a set of protruding dogs which can be retracted if an emergency release is required. A conically shaped wedge is driven into the top of the tubing to be expanded. After some initial expansion, a seal behind the wedge contacts the expanded portion of the tube. Further driving of the wedge into the tube ultimately brings in a series of back-up seals which enter the expanded tube and are disengaged from the driving mandrel at that point. Further applied pressure now makes use of a piston of enlarged cross-sectional area to continue the further expansion of the tubular. When the wedge has fully stroked through the tubular, it has by then expanded the tubular to an inside diameter larger than the protruding dogs which formerly supported it. At that point, the assembly can be removed from the wellbore. An emergency release, involving dropping a ball and shifting a sleeve, allows, through the use of applied pressure, the shifting of a sleeve which supports the dog which in turn supports the tubing to be expanded. Once the support sleeve for the dog has shifted, the dog can retract to allow removal of the tool, even if the tube to be expanded has not been fully expanded.

Method and apparatus for top to bottom expansion of tubulars

A one-trip whipstock milling system is disclosed which allows for setting of a packer or plug which is run in as part of the bottomhole assembly, in conjunction with orientation instrumentation, a whipstock, and a one-trip milling system connected to the whipstock. The assembly is run-in the hole together and inserted to the desired depth. With the orientation of the whipstock known from the down-hole instrumentation, the preferred embodiment involves pressurization of the wellbore to actuate the packer assembly. Having set the packer at the proper orientation and depth, the milling immediately begins and continues in a continuous effort until the window is fully milled, at which point the milling equipment and orientation equipment are withdrawn from the wellbore.

One-trip window-milling method

Electrical generating apparatus is provided which connects to the production tubing. In a preferred embodiment, this apparatus includes a housing having a primary flow passageway in communication with the production tubing. The housing also includes a laterally displaced side passageway communicating with the primary flow passageway such that production fluid passes upwardly towards the surface through the primary and side passageways. A flow diverter may be positioned in the housing to divert a variable amount of production fluid from the production tubing and into the side passageway. In accordance with an important feature of this invention, an electrical generator is located at least partially in or along the side passageway. The electrical generator generates electricity through the interaction of the flowing production fluid.

Downhole apparatus for generating electrical power in a well

A downhole multilateral completion tool is disclosed which includes a premachined window joint and a production tube adapted to be moved downhole through the window joint and kicked off into the pre-drilled lateral. A flange and seal form a part of the uphole end of the production tube and provide a 3500 psi seal after the production tube is placed in the lateral. The invention, moreover, includes an energizing sleeve which biases the flange into a sealed position and a packer which by pulling the production tube, enhances the seal of the flange.
