Systems and methods for determining whether a companion communication device is beyond a proximity of a primary communication device are provided. In some aspects, a system includes an analysis module configured to determine whether a wireless transaction between the primary communication device and the companion communication device is at a conclusion. The system also includes a communications module configured to emit a sensing signal based on the determination of whether the transaction is at the conclusion. The sensing signal is insufficient to elicit a response from the companion communication device. The system also includes a detection module configured to detect a present parameter associated with the emitted sensing signal. The analysis module is configured to determine a parameter change between the present parameter and a reference parameter, and to determine whether the companion communication device is beyond the proximity of the primary communication device based on the parameter change.

One embodiment of a method of generating a clock signal and synchronizing the generated clock signal with a digital data stream comprises generating a clock signal using an oscillator, identifying a transition in a portion of the data stream, and synchronizing a transition of the clock signal with the identified transition in the data stream by changing a state of the oscillator using control circuitry in response to the identification of the transition in the data stream, wherein the clock signal is synchronized with the data stream for both situations where the oscillator operates at a frequency greater than the data rate and where the oscillator operates a frequency less than the data rate. Embodiments enable controlling a proximity transaction between first and second communications devices, each of which is provided with a short-range transceiver. In an exemplary embodiment, the first communications device has an RF/ID reader, and the second communications device has an RF/ID tag, the RF/ID tag containing the same identifier information as the second communications device. The second communications device is positioned within the range of the reader of the first communications device. Then, the transceiver of the second communications device transmits a transaction request and the identifies information of that device to the first communications device. The reader of the first communications device then interrogates the tag of the second communications device and the transaction is completed upon the reader of the first communications device receiving identifier information from the tag of the second communications device that is identical to the identifier information already received.

Proximity transaction control method

A network adapter capable of receiving data from a network, said adapter arranged to receive data at at least a lowest and a highest rate; said adapter comprising: sampling means arranged to sample said data; an equalizer arranged to receive, and equalize, said data samples, and said equalizer capable of being trained to equalize data, at at least, each of said lowest and highest data rates; and training means capable of training said equalizer to equalize data; wherein; said adapter is initially arranged to train said equalizer to receive data at said lowest data rate allowing data to be decoded and if upon decoding said adapter determines that said equalizer has been trained to equalise data at the incorrect rate to retrain said equalize to equalize data at the correct rate.
