A blast attenuator for blast overpressure has features that allow for blast attenuation and ease of projectile loading from the muzzle of the weapon system. This combination of physical ease of use and blast reduction allows the system to achieve high levels of performance without making significant concessions to operator safety.

Openings in a muzzle brake provide recoil inhibition and impulse noise attenuation by redirecting the propellant gases to the external environment. A turning vane aggressively turns and redirects the propellant gases in a rearward direction to counter the recoil of the weapon system. An angled baffle provides a physical barrier to redirect propellant gases rearward to provide additional force to counteract the recoil force. Attenuation slits mitigate blast overpressure by producing a fluid barrier of high velocity propellant gases directed radially away from the muzzle brake. The fluid barrier from the attenuation slits interacts with the redirected propellant gas from the turning vane and the angled baffle and redirects the counter recoil gases away from the crew.

A method to attenuate the blast wave/blast overpressure from a weapon discharge by leaking an effective quantity of propellant gas from behind the projectile, into the precursor gas flow in front of the projectile, while the projectile is still in the weapon barrel&#x2014;whereby the exit pressure ratio of the projectile from the weapon is surprisingly reduced by about 95%&#x2014;resulting in a reduction of from about 51.6 to about 58.2% in the peak pressure level/sound wave which impacts the user or crew of the weapon.

A muzzle brake with reduced blast overpressure may include a body having a top, a bottom, and an attachment hub. Vanes may extend from the top to the bottom. A first vane may be located at a front of the bore in the attachment hub. The first vane may have a forward-angled internal surface. A second vane may be located axially forward of the first vane. The second vane may have a forward-angled rear surface and a forward-angled front surface. A third vane may be located axially forward of the second vane. The third vane may have a rearward-angled rear surface. The forward-angled internal surface of the first vane may include an inner surface adjacent the bore and an outer surface adjacent the inner surface. The inner and outer surfaces may be angled differently with respect to the longitudinal axis.
