This invention relates to a multilayer silver halide photographic element, generally processed with phenylenediamine based developer solutions, comprising a support bearing a cyan dye image-forming unit comprised of at least one red-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer having associated therewith at least one cyan dye-forming coupler, a magenta dye image-forming unit comprising at least one green-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer having associated therewith at least one magenta dye-forming coupler, and a yellow dye image-forming unit comprising at least one blue-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer having associated therewith at least one yellow dye-forming coupler, wherein at least one layer additionally contains a 2-substituted-5-amino-1-napthol DIR according to Formula (I): wherein: It has been found that such 2-substituted-5-amino-1-napthol based DIRs have improved properties and can provide a conventional silver halide photographic element with excellent image structure and color reproduction.

This invention comprises a photographic element, comprising a support bearing at least one silver halide emulsion and at least one malonanilide yellow dye-forming DIR coupler of structure I, below: ##STR1## wherein: R.sup.1 and R.sub.2 are individually selected from the group consisting of halogen atoms and alkoxycarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl, carbamoyl, carbonamido, sulfonamido, sulfamoyl, alkylsulfonyl, arylsulfonyl, sulfonyloxy, acyloxy and cyano groups and each is in the para position or in either meta position relative to the NH group of the anilide; m and n are individually 0 or 1; R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are individually a halogen atom or an alkyl group and may be in the para position or either meta position relative to the NH group of the anilide; X and Y are individually a halogen atom or an alkyl or alkoxy group; and R.sub.5 is an alkyl group with 3 to 10 carbon atoms or a phenyl group.

Photographic element containing a malonanilide DIR coupler

It has been known that administration of pharmaceutical agents (both diagnostic and therapeutic) with poor water solubility in the form of particles less than 400 nm in diameter produces agent formulation with increased bioavailibility. Bioavailability being proportional to the surface area, increases with reduction of particle size of the dispersed agent. We have discovered that chemical derivatization of certain photographic coupler molecules with chemical moiety that are capable of functioning as pharmaceutical agents (both diagnostic and therapeutic) is amenable to the preparation of nanoparticulate pharmaceutical agent dispersions via a process that comprises the dissolution of the said pharmaceutical agent in an alkaline solution and then neutralizing the said solution with an acid in the presence of a suitable surface-modifying, surface-active agent to form an ultra fine particle dispersion of the said pharmaceutical agent. The composition and process of this invention leads to particles of Z-average diameters as small as up to 10 nm as measured by photon correlation spectroscopy. The composition and process schemes of this invention are suitable for large-scale manufacture of these micro-nanoparticulate pharmaceutical agent dispersions.

A silver halide photographic element having a light sensitive silver halide which layer also contains a 2-equivalent pyrazolone magenta coupler, a compound of formula (S) below, and a hydroquinone compound of formula (R) below: ##STR1## wherein: R.sub.1 is an alkyl group; and R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are independently an alkyl group or H. A process for preparation of a 2,3 or 4-oxo-benzaldehyde or ketone compound by reaction of a 2,3 or 4-hydroxy benzaldehyde or ketone with an ortho, meta or parabromo or chloralkylphenoxy compound comprises reaction of the bromo or chloroalkylphenoxy compound with potassium iodide to form an iodo compound in situ; then, reaction of the resulting product with a 2, 3 or 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde or ketone in the presence of alkylpyridine and a dipolar aprotic solvent. The resulting compounds are useful for formation of photographic color couplers for use in photographic materials.

Preparation of photographic compounds

A process for obtaining highly stable color photographic images utilizes a silver halide photographic element comprising an essentially colorless, immobile compound which is capable of complexing with ferrous ions to form a dye. The complexing compound contains a complexing moiety which is represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein m is zero or a positive integer 1 to 3, n and p are independently 0 or 1 and represents a single or double bond. Z is R.sup.1 --N.dbd., O.dbd., S.dbd., R.sup.1 --P.dbd., (R.sup.1).sub.2 P-- or (R.sup.1).sub.3 P.dbd., and when Z is (R.sup.1).sub.2 P--, n is 1, otherwise n is 0. R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are independently hydrogen, amino, hydroxy, mercapto, alkoxy, alkyl, aryl or a heterocyclic moiety. When R.sup.6 is so defined, p is 1 and is a single bond. If m is 0, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3, and R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 taken together can independently represent the carbon and heteroatoms necessary to complete a substituted or unsubstituted carbocyclic or heterocyclic nucleus, or if m is 1 to 3, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6, and R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 can independently represent the carbon and heteroatoms necessary to complete a substituted or unsubstituted heterocyclic nucleus. When R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are so defined, p is 0 when is a double bond, and p is 1 when is a single bond.
