The invention relates to a method to analyze the condition of a functional fluid comprising: Further an apparatus for analyzing functional fluids is disclosed in the form of a test medium consisting of an absorbent or nonabsorbent material which has been treated with a chemical indicator, marker substance or a developer or detector reagent upon which a sample of the fluid to be tested is placed. The components in the treated test medium react with components in the test fluid providing a visual indication, for example a color change, to judge the condition, the presence of a marker substance or another parameter of the fluid. The functional fluid may be a lubricant, fuel or other functional fluid of innumerable sources, including internal combustion engines, turbines, transmissions, differentials, pumps, metalworking operations, cooling systems, etc, and be either organic solvent or aqueous based.

Rapid analysis of functional fluids

This invention relates to a lubricating composition comprising at least about 30% by weight at least one mineral oil, having a kinematic viscosity of less than about 8 cSt at 100&#xb0; C., (A) from about 15% to about 40% by weight of at least one polymer, and (B) up to about 30% by weight of at least one fluidizing agent, provided that when the fluidizing agent is a poly&#x3b1;-olefin having a kinematic viscosity from about 2 to about 30 cSt at 100&#xb0; C., then the poly&#x3b1;-olefin is present in an amount up to about 12% by weight, wherein the lubricating composition has a shear loss of less than about 15% in the 20 hour taper bearing shear test. The invention also relates to concentrates used in preparing lubricating compositions. The present combination of components provides good low and high temperature properties especially when used in combination with one or more mineral oils. In one aspect, the compositions provide improved oxidation resistance.

Lubricating compositions

This invention relates to a lubricating composition comprising a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and (a) a extreme pressure improving amount of at least one sulfur compound, and an antiwear or an extreme pressure improving amount of the combination of (b) at least one ammonium salt of a phosphoric acid ester, (c) at least one phosphite, and (d) at least one thiophosphate or at least one reaction product of a phosphite and sulfur or a source of sulfur. The invention also relates to concentrates and greases containing the combination of the sulfur is compound and the specific phosphorus compounds.

Combination of a sulfur compound and specific phosphorus compounds and their use in lubricating compositions, concentrates and greases

This invention relates to compositions containing a sulfur containing antiwear/extreme pressure agent, basic nitrogen compound or a mixture thereof together with a hydrocarbyl mercaptan. The composition may additionally contain a phosphorus or boron antiwear or extreme pressure agent, a dispersant or an overbased metal salt. The invention also relates to lubricants, functional fluids, and concentrates containing the same. Seals, e.g. nitrile, polyacrylate, and fluoroelastomer, in contact with these composition have reduced deterioration. With the use of these compositions, lubricants, and functional fluids, the seals' useful life is extended.

Compositions for extending seal life, and lubricants and functional fluids containing the same

This invention relates to a lubricating composition comprising at least about 30% by weight of at least one mineral oil, having a kinematic viscosity of less than about 8 cSt at 100.degree. C., (A) from about 5% to about 30% by weight at least one polymer having a Mw less than about 10,000, and (B) from about 2% to about 12% by weight of a polymer having a Mw greater than about 15,000, wherein the lubricating composition has a shear loss of less than about 15% in the 20 hour taper bearing shear test. The invention also relates to concentrates used in preparing shear stable lubricating compositions. The present combination of components provides good low and high temperature properties to mineral oils, even at high treat levels. These lubricants have good shear stability and in one aspect have improved oxidation resistance.
