A hood for capturing fumes and dust generated during operating of a metal melting furnace including an integral conveyor for charging the furnace. The furnace has an upwardly opening mouth covered by a lid. The hood overlies the lid to capture fumes and dust emanating from the furnace during melting, slagging, pouring, and associated furnace operations. An opening is provided in the hood for insertion of material, e.g., scrap metal, into the furnace. The instant invention includes a conveyor flexibly, e.g., pivotally, mounted between the hood and the lid. The hood opening includes a hopper mounted above the conveyor and opening through the hood into the conveyor. The illustrated system further includes an opening through the furnace lid and a chute adjacent the furnace lid opening for engaging a distal end of the conveyor when the conveyor is moved into a use position. A door is provided to close the distal end of the conveyor when the conveyor is not moving material into the furnace. Another door, which is gravity urged into a closed position, is opened by the conveyor as the conveyor moves from its storage position to its use position. Return movement by the conveyor to its storage position allows this last-mentioned door to close.

A multi-position duct system includes a generally horizontally extending first duct section having one wall defined by a flexible web. The first duct section has first and second ends and is pivotally mounted adjacent its first end for movement in a horizontal arc about a support member. A car is mounted on the first duct section for longitudinal movement. The car engages the flexible web to define within the car a chamber in open communication with the interior of the first duct section. A second telescoping duct section having vertically upper and lower ends is attached at its upper end to the car and moves therewith longitudinally of the first duct section. The second duct section also is in open communication with the chamber. A hood for collecting air containing pollutant fumes and particles is attached to the lower end of the second duct section. The first duct section is attached to a source of suction. The hood can be positioned at a selected vertical height a selected distance from the support member to withdraw pollutant-laden air from a work area.

Multi-position duct system

An exhaust system for use with an electric arc melting furnace having a crucible and an upwardly directed mouth covered by a roof, and a device coupled to the roof for projecting it upwardly along an axis and pivotally about the axis to a position out of registry with the mouth for providing access for charging the furnace, and a device for tilting the furnace for tapping and slagging. In one embodiment the fumes exhaust system comprises an exhaust fan, a telescoping main fumes exhaust duct flexibly coupled at one end to the exhaust fan, a coupler flexibly connected to the other end of the main fumes exhaust duct and a tapping and melting manifold and hood flexibly and telescopically connected to the coupler. The tapping and melting manifold and hood are connected to the roof and project vertically along the roof axis and pivot about the roof axis with the roof to a position out of registry with the mouth. A slagging manifold and hood are mounted on the furnace and connected to the coupler. The fumes exhaust system includes a charging hood adapted for movement into close, overlying relationship with the furnace mouth when the tapping and melting manifold and hood are withdrawn from registry therewith, the charging hood having an opening in its top through which the charging bucket is lowered, the charging hood being in communication with the slagging manifold when the charging hood is in overlying relationship with the furnace mouth. The charging hood is constructed to provide for air movement past the mouth and into the slagging manifold for exhausting fumes and dust evolved during charging of the furnace into the main fumes exhaust duct. In two other embodiments, the main fumes exhaust duct is coaxial with the tilt axis of the furnace at the point where the furnace exhaust system is coupled to the main fumes exhaust duct. The furnace exhaust system is coupled to the main duct by a swivel which allows the furnace system to remain coupled to the main duct during tapping and slagging. The charging hoods in the two last mentioned embodiments pivot in horizontal planes into and out of their use positions in close overlying relationship to the furnace mouth.

Arc furnace fumes control system

A slagging manifold and hood are mounted on the furnace and connected to the coupler. The fumes exhaust system includes a charging hood adapted for movement into close, overlying relationship with the furnace mouth when the tapping and melting manifold and hood are withdrawn from registry therewith, the charging hood having an opening in its top through which the charging bucket is lowered, the charging hood being in communication with the slagging manifold when the charging hood is in overlying relationship with the furnace mouth. The charging hood is constructed to provide for air movement past the mouth and into the slagging manifold for exhausting fumes and dust evolved during charging of the furnace into the main fumes exhaust duct.

In a combination of a furnace which is provided with an upwardly opening mouth, a lid for the mouth, a hood associated with the furnace and enclosing the mouth, the hood having a ceiling disposed above the uppermost position of the lid and the ceiling being formed with a port registering with the furnace mouth, and a cover for the port, the improvement in which the lid is supported upon a generally vertically upwardly extending post for swinging movement with the post about a substantially vertical axis outside the boundary of the mouth between a position in registry with the mouth and a position laterally removed from such registry, and the cover being mounted upon the post for swinging movement about the axis with the post and the lid.
