The receiving mechanism contacts the container and receives the signal from the fluid in the container. The apparatus comprises a mechanism for determining the fluid in the container from the signal after the signal has passed through the fluid and determining the fluid viscosity from the amplitude and sound velocity. The determining mechanism is connected to the receiving mechanism. The method comprises the steps of transmitting a signal into fluid. Then there is the step of receiving the signal after it has passed through the fluid. Next there is the step of determining the attenuation of the signal as the signal has passed through the fluid. Then there is the step of finding the viscosity of the fluid in the container from the attenuation of the signal and transit time.

A method controls a Web search for server computer resources by an end-user Web crawler. Each resource, such as a Web page, is located by a resource address specified as a character string. The end-user defines a scope for an initial Web search by settings. The settings are used to search the Web for resources limited by the scope. The set of resources located during the search are rendered on output device, and positive and negative examples are selected from the set of resources to infer a rule. The rule is displayed, as well as a subset of resources that match on the rule. The selecting, inferring, and rendering steps are repeated while searching until a final rule is obtained. The rule matches resources that the crawler should process and does not match resource that it should avoid.

The present invention is an apparatus for determining the flow rate of a fluid in a pipe. The apparatus includes a device for providing acoustic energy on a diagonal path through the fluid. The diagonal providing device is in contact with the pipe. The apparatus also includes a device for providing acoustic energy on a diametrical path through the fluid. The diametrical providing device is in contact with the pipe. The apparatus is also comprised of a device for determining the flow of fluid in the pipe based on the acoustic energy of the diagonal providing device and the acoustic energy of the diametrical providing device. In one embodiment, the diagonal providing device is fixedly disposed on the pipe. In another embodiment, the diametrical providing device provides acoustic energy emitted in both directions on the diametrical path. The diagonal providing device preferably includes a first transducer and a second transducer located at diametrically opposed positions about the pipe. The first transducer and second transducer are preferably adapted to alternatively function as transmitter and receiver so as to cause ultrasonic signals to travel through the fluid along the diametric path. The diametrical providing device preferably includes a third transducer and a fourth transducer located at diagonally opposed upstream and downstream positions relative to one another. The third transducer and the forth transducer are preferably adapted to alternatively function as a transmitter and receiver so as to cause ultrasonic signals to travel through the fluid alternatively in upstream and downstream directions along the diagonal path between the third transducer and the fourth transducer. The diametric path is adjacent to the diagonal path so that the transducers are sampling the same portion of fluid.

An apparatus for measuring the temperature of a flowing fluid in a pipe. The apparatus includes a mechanism for actively testing the flowing fluid with acoustic energy and producing a test signal corresponding to the temperature of the fluid. The testing mechanism is disposed on the outside of the pipe and acoustic energy follows a path through the pipe wall. Additionally, the apparatus includes a signal processing mechanism for determining the temperature of the fluid based on the test signal. The testing mechanism is in communication with the signal processing mechanism.

As the dielectric constant and the halfwave voltage of electro-optic crystals having a fourfold axis of rotary inversion are oppositely dependent on the absolute temperature, but their product is nearly independent of temperature, temperature compensation in an ac voltage measuring system utilizing such an electro-optic crystal is provided by measuring the time averaged current through the crystal. Good electric isolation is achieved by a current sensing circuit which produces a pulsed light signal having a pulse rate proportional to the time averaged current through the crystal. The pulsed light signal is converted to an electrical signal for input to a digital computer which calculates therefrom, and from a reference current and voltage measured at a reference temperature, and a time averaged voltage measurement, a temperature correction factor which is applied to the crystal halfwave voltage used by the computer in calculating the instantaneous value of the voltage to be measured. A look up table containing empirically derived values related to the calculated correction factor can be used to generate a correction factor adjusted for leakage through the crystal, fringing of the field produced by the voltage to be measured, and residual temperature dependence of the electro-optic crystal. In a practical embodiment of the invention, shield rings surround both ends of the electro-optic crystal to reduce fringing of the electric field.

Electro-optic voltage measuring system with temperature compensation

A voltage measuring system utilizes an electro-optic voltage transducer (EOVT) in which two beams of polarized light injected into one end of an electro-optic crystal parallel to its fourfold axis of rotary inversion are reflected back through the crystal by a prism so that the optical inputs and outputs, including polarizers, collimators, optic fibers, and fractional wave plates where required, are all located at one end of the crystal, which is preferably connected to the low side of the voltage to be measured. The EOVT is supported substantially only at the end with the optical inputs and outputs, with the free end on which the prism is mounted being substantially unsupported. In one embodiment of the invention, a triangular prism is used to reflect the polarized light back through the prism, in another a pyramid prism is utilized. In the latter case, the material of the prism and, if desired, a metal coating applied to the reflecting faces of the prism, can be selected so as to produce a 1/4 wave phase shift between components of the two polarized light beams parallel to the fast and slow axes, which is needed in addition to the phase shift resulting from the measured voltage for generating an unambiguous representation of voltages exceeding the halfway voltage of the electro-optic crystal, thereby eliminating the need for fractional wave plates. A partial or full metal coating on the prism can be used to electrically connect a transparent electrode located between the prism and the crystal to a conducting spring bearing against the prism for applying the voltage to be measured to the free end of the electro-optic crystal.

Electro-optic voltage measuring appartaus with single ended optics

The present invention is a monitor that detects generator core 12 hot spots where the insulation between ferromagnetic sheets is breaking down by monitoring rotor 10 shaft voltage. The difference between the differential shaft voltage at each end of the rotor 14 produces a voltage signal that changes as the core 12 malfunctions. By comparing signal samples over time, core failure can be detected. Spring loaded rotor shaft brushes 20 and 22 connected to differential isolation amplifiers 24 and 26 obtain the voltage between ends 16 and 18 of the rotating shaft and nearby frame, and a differential amplifier 28 produces the difference between the shaft end differential voltages which is the shaft dissymmetry voltage. An analog-to-digital converter 30 produces digital values of the dissymmetry voltage which can be converted into a voltage frequency spectrum by a Fourier Transform routine executed by a computer 32 or analyzed directly. The computer 32 monitors the spectrum or time domain signal over time for changes and produces an alarm when the changes exceed a threshold. Bandpass filters 34 and a simple threshold comparison routine or analog threshold devices can substitute for the FFT routine.

Core monitor that uses rotor shaft voltages

The voltage between two objects is measured utilizing an electro-optic crystal exhibiting birefringence in two axes (slow and fast) mutually orthogonal to an optic axis extending between the two objects. Two collimated light beams polarized at an angle to the slow and fast axes is passed through the crystal parallel to the optic axis with one of the collimated light beams retarded relative to the other by about 1/4 wave. The two beams emerging from the crystal are passed through a polarizer and converted to phase shifted electrical signals by photo diodes in electric circuits which regulate the sources of the light beams to maintain the peak magnitudes of the two electric signals constant and equal. As another feature of the invention, a stairstep output waveform representative of the measured waveform is generated in a digital computer from a bidirectional cumulative count of zero crossings of the two electric signals which is incremented or decremented depending upon which of the two electrical signals is leading. Improved accuracy of the output signal is achieved by adjusting the stairstep waveform by the magnitude of the smaller of the two electrical signals, with the sense of the adjustment determined by the relative polarities of the two electrical signals.

A device for monitoring a magnetic field intensity having a given direction, the device including: a light conducting member (11) defining a first optical port (23), a second optical port (24), an optical path extending between the ports, and elements (31,34) for causing light to travel along the path between the ports (23,24); a first polarizer (31) disposed in the optical path for polarizing the light beam in a first plane of polarizaiton transverse to the path; a second polarizer (33) disposed in the optical path for polarizing the light beam in a second plane of polarization transverse to the path, the second polarizer (33) being spaced along the path from the first polarizer (31); and a focusing surface (18) disposed to intersect the beam at a point along the path between the polarizers (31,33) to focus the light beam from the first optical port (23) onto the second optical port (24). The light conducting member (11) constitutes a medium between the first and second polarizers (31,33) for permitting rotation of the plane of polarization of the light beam under influence of the magnetic field when the device is oriented so that at least a portion of the optical path between the polarizers (31,33) extends in a direction having a component parallel to the given direction so that the intensity of the light beam at the second optical port (24) will vary as a function of variations in the intensity of the magnetic field.
