Vulcanizable rubber compositions and articles such as tires having improved metal adhesion and metal adhesion retention to brass and brass-plated metallic reinforcement. The improvement comprises substituting at least about 10.0 parts by weight of a halogenated rubber for non-halogenated rubber present in the vulcanizable rubber composition. The non-halogenated rubber can be natural or synthetic or blends thereof. A method for improving the metal adhesion and metal adhesion retention between a vulcanizable rubber and brass or brass-plated metallic reinforcement includes the steps of blending at least about 10.0 parts by weight of a halogenated rubber with up to about 90.0 parts by weight of a vulcanizable rubber essentially free of other halogenated rubber and curing the blend of rubbers with the brass or brass-plated metallic reinforcement embedded therein.

Naturally occurring dark, tacky, low softening thermoplastic resins of low acid number can be used as substitutes for all or part of the non-elastomeric petroleum-derived components of rubber stocks used for manufacture of tires and other rubber articles. For example, such resins can be used to replace petroleum-derived process oils or resins, or both, used in making tires. The resins, which are derived from wood, are low softening thermoplastic resins characterized by having about 15-30% unsaponifiables, 3-20% rosin acids, 3-15% fatty acids and 5-15% sterols. This invention is directed to an improved rubber skim stock composition and a product containing the skim stock having improved adhesion and adhesion retention with metallic reinforcement cords such as brassed steel. The invention composition comprises a conventional vulcanizable rubber skim stock, at least one halogenated polymer and at least one organo complex of cobalt or nickel. Tests conducted with brass-plated and zinc-plated steel cords showed improved metal adhesion and metal adhesion retention with use of the improved rubber skim stock of this invention when compared to control formulations.

Natural occurring thermoplastic resins are used as a substitute for process oils and/or hydrocarbon resins, as well as for tackifiers, softeners, extenders, processing aids, and cure retarders, in rubber stocks, as for example, a rubber skim stock used in making a tire. Disclosed is an improved cured rubber skim stock composition containing natural rubber utilized in the manufacture of tires, conveyor belts, hoses and the like, and with metallic reinforcement cords embedded therein. The improvement comprises from about 5 to about 25 parts by weight of Neoprene replacing an equivalent amount of natural rubber in order to impart better rubber-to-metal adhesion and adhesion retention between the rubber skim stock and the metallic reinforcement following exposure to long term humidity chamber tests.
