A gap adjusting device for a rotary press comprises a frame and a fountain roller and a metering roller which are both rotatably mounted relative to the frame. A gap is defined between the metering roller and the fountain roller, and an adjustment member is provided which has an actuator for alternatively moving the rollers toward and away from each other, thereby decreasing or increasing, respectively, the size of the gap. Additionally, the gap adjusting device includes a stabilizing member for stabilizing the metering roller.

The present invention provides an apparatus for producing at least two 4-page signatures (340) and an apparatus for producing at least one 16-page signature (460). The signatures are produced by folding and cutting sheets cut from a continuous web in a folding machine (500 or 600). The apparatus of the present invention provides a selectable blade device which folds or folds and cuts sheets being processed in the device. When placed in the fold and cut position, the apparatus is capable of producing at least two 4-page signatures (340) or at least one 16-page signature (460) without the need for a final off-line trimming step.

A printing device (10) for a printing press (12) having a cylinder (14) having at least one journal (16 or 18) extending from an end (20 or 22) of the cylinder (14), and a bearing (30 or 32) on the journal (16 or 18) and having an inner edge (44 or 46) located in the range of 1/16 inches to 11/2 inches from the end (20 or 22) of the cylinder (14).

A locking device (12) for a printing press (10) having a cylinder (40) with a slot (46). The device (12) has a slide block (54) slidably received in the slot (46) and being movable inwardly and outwardly in the slot (46). A blanket (68) extends peripherally around the cylinder (40) and has opposed ends secured between the slide block (54) and cylinder (40) with the slide block (40) located at an inner position in the slot (46).

A locking device (12) for a printing press (10) having a cylinder (40) having an outer surface (44) and an elongated slot (46) adjacent the outer surface (44), with the slot (46) having a lower surface (48) and a pair of opposed first and second side surfaces (50 and 52) extending between the lower surface (48) of the slot (46) and the outer surface (44) of the cylinder (40), a slide block (54) having an outer surface (56) and being slidably received in the slot (46), with the slide block (54) being movable between a first inner position with the outer surface (56) of the slide block (54) being flush with the outer surface (44) of the cylinder (40), and a second outer position with the slide block (54) projecting above the outer surface (44) of the cylinder (40), a retaining member (20) rotatably mounted in the slide block (54) and having an elongated groove (22) and a blanket (68) having one end (70) received against the first surface (50) of the slot (46) and a second end (72) received in the groove (22) of the retaining member (20) when the slide block (54) is located in the second outer position with the blanket (68) extending peripherally around the outer surface (44) of the cylinder (40), and a device (16 and 18) for rotating the retaining member (20) to tighten and retain the blanket (68) on the blanket cylinder (40) and a device (80 and 92) for releasably locking the slide block (54) at the inner position.
