A modified atmosphere flow-wrap system and method and components thereof are provided for packaging a food product in a reduced oxygen atmosphere in a continuous or partially-continuous process. In one aspect, the flow-wrap system includes a saturation tunnel for saturating the food products with modified gas to reduce an amount of residual oxygen therein. In another aspect, the flow-wrap system includes a flow-wrapping station with a modified gas lance that extends into film webbing used to form the food product packages to insert modified gas into the film webbing and restrict oxygen from entering the food packages.

Modified atmospheric flow-wrap system

Methods and apparatus for tilting and filling a carton with a pouch and a flowable food product are described. The carton can be tilted prior to filling in order to minimize a void between the pouch and a sidewall of the carton. The carton is pivoted to a tilted orientation, such that the sidewall includes a lowermost inclined segment. The pouch is then inserted into the carton either prior to or after pivoting the carton to the tilted orientation so that the pouch can substantially rest against the inclined segment. The flowable food product is then at partially deposited into the carton, such that the flowable food product substantially fills in next to the pouch instead of between the pouch and the inclined segment. After a sufficient height of flowable food product has been deposited into the carton, the carton can be returned to a vertical orientation and closed.

Methods and apparatus for filling a container with a pouch and a flowable food product

Methods of coating the interior surface of a hollow tubular structure, in particular a drinking device, and more particularly a drinking straw, with an edible composition to impart a desirable modification to a beverage that is drunk through the straw. The edible composition comprises an adhering agent and a powdered ingredient coated to the interior surface. Suitable adhering agents include lipids (e.g., soybean oil, corn oil, canola oil, sunflower oil, rapeseed oil, peanut oil, and mixtures thereof), medium chain triglycerides oils, emulsifiers, and mixtures thereof. Suitable powdered ingredients include edible acids, edible bases, sweeteners, flavorings, vitamins, minerals, colorants, sensate agents, carotenoids, antioxidants, polyphenols, phytonutrients, and mixtures thereof. The adhering agent is applied to the interior surface of the straw by any one of a number of methods followed by incorporating the powdered ingredient into the adhering agent layer. The powdered ingredient adheres or sticks to, and is incorporated into, the adhering agent layer. Once the powdered ingredient layer is added, the coated drinking straw is ready for use with a beverage.

A therapeutic passive thermal transfer device for persons afflicted by disease, injury and the many forms of arthritis. The device is constructed of a plurality of metallic fibers woven into a porous screenlike mesh which allows for skin contact and air circulation thereover and through. Attachment means secure the device to a desired body part and allow the absorption of body heat from the afflicted body part and the transfer therefrom to the ambient air, with normal air circulation thereover. A thermally non-insulating cloth cover absorbs moisture and permits evaporation.

Therapeutic thermal transfer device

A method and apparatus for rupturing refuse carrier bags to expose the potentially salvagable materials therein is disclosed. A transport tube is provided with an inlet end having an upper circumferential portion cut away to receive carrier bags placed therein and an outlet end having an opening for expelling the contents of the carrier bags. A screw impeller means is rotatably supported in the transport tube. Drive means are provided for rotating the screw impeller within the transport tube to advance the carrier bags from the inlet end toward the outlet end. A sleeve means is formed is about the screw impeller between the inlet end and outlet end of the transport tube. The sleeve is slightly larger in diameter than the screw impeller. The upper portions of the carrier bags engage the sleeve and are thereby prevented from being further advanced through the transport tube. The screw impeller then ruptures the carrier bag to expose the contents therein.

Apparatus for safely extracting a mouthpiece which has become jammed or locked into the tubular stem of a musical instrument comprises an adjustable, coaxially aligned assembly including a mouthpiece-engaging slotted ring member externally threaded for engagement with the internally threaded portion of a slotted support collar to which is adjustably coupled a clamping means having a central opening for abutting an enlargement on the tubular stem of the instrument wherein upon rotation of the ring member within the support collar in one direction, the length of the apparatus is increased causing a thrust on the mouthpiece away from the tubular extension of the instrument to free the mouthpiece therefrom.
