An electrosurgical system is provided for the treatment of tissue, the system comprising an electrosurgical generator () and an instrument () comprising an instrument shaft () having a longitudinal axis, and an electrode assembly () at one end of the shaft. The electrode assembly () comprises a first tissue treatment electrode (), a second tissue treatment electrode (), and first and second return electrodes () electrically insulated from the first and second tissue treatment electrodes by means of insulation members (). The first and second tissue treatment electrodes () each have an exposed surface for treating tissue, the exposed surface of the first tissue treatment electrode () being such as to treat tissue disposed on the longitudinal axis, and the exposed surface of the second tissue treatment electrode () being such as to treat tissue disposed laterally of the longitudinal axis. The instrument has a first set of connections (A,C) by which the first tissue treatment electrode () can be placed in circuit with the first return electrode () such that, in use, a current path is established between the first tissue treatment electrode () and the first return electrode (). The instrument has a second set of connections (B,D) by which the second tissue treatment electrode () can be placed in circuit with the second return electrode () such that, in use, a current path is established between the second tissue treatment electrode () and the second return electrode ().

Electrosurgical system

An electrosurgical instrument is provided for the treatment of tissue, the instrument comprising an instrument shaft () having a longitudinal axis, and an electrode assembly at one end of the shaft. The electrode assembly comprises first and second active electrodes (), () and at least one return electrode (), the electrodes being electrically insulated one from another by means of one or more insulation members (). The first and second active electrodes () each have an exposed surface for treating tissue, the exposed surface () of the first active electrode being such as to treat tissue disposed laterally of the longitudinal axis at a first radial position with respect to the instrument shaft. The exposed surface () of the second active electrode is such as to treat tissue disposed laterally of the longitudinal axis at a second radial position with respect to the instrument shaft. The instrument has a first set of connections by which the first active electrode () can be placed in circuit with the return electrode (), and a second set of connections by which the second active electrode () can be placed in circuit with the return electrode ().

Electrosurgical instrument

An electrosurgical instrument is provided for the treatment of tissue, the instrument comprising an instrument shaft () having a longitudinal axis, and an electrode assembly at one end of the shaft. The electrode assembly comprises a first tissue treatment electrode (), a second tissue treatment electrode (), and a third electrode () which is electrically insulated from the first and second tissue treatment electrodes by means of an insulation member (). The first and second tissue treatment electrodes () each have an exposed surface for treating tissue, the exposed surface of the first tissue treatment electrode () being such as to treat tissue disposed on the longitudinal axis, and the exposed surface of the second tissue treatment electrode () being such as to treat tissue disposed laterally of the longitudinal axis. The instrument has a first set of connections (A,B) by which the first tissue treatment electrode () can be placed in circuit with the second electrode () such that, in use, a current path is established therebetween. The instrument has a second set of connections (B,C) by which the second tissue treatment electrode () can be placed in circuit with the third electrode () such that, in use, a current path is established therebetween.

Electrosurgical instrument with longitudinal and lateral action

An electrosurgical system is provided for the treatment of tissue, the system including an electrosurgical generator () for generating a radio frequency (RF) voltage, and an electrosurgical instrument () for the vaporization of tissue. The instrument () comprises an instrument shaft () having a longitudinal axis, and an electrode assembly at one end of the shaft. The electrode assembly comprises a tissue treatment electrode () and a return electrode () electrically insulated one from another by means of an insulation member (). The tissue treatment electrode () has an exposed surface () for treating tissue, the exposed surface of the tissue treatment electrode being laterally disposed on the instrument shaft (), and being such that it presents a substantially planar face lying in a plane angled at between 120&#xb0; and 177.5&#xb0; to the longitudinal axis, with 0&#xb0; and 180&#xb0; being the proximal and distal directions of the longitudinal axis. The generator () is such that the magnitude of the RF voltage delivered to the tissue treatment electrode () is sufficient to cause tissue vaporization when the system is used for tissue treatment.
