An electrical connector member for a coaxial cable. The connector member comprises a first section and a second section. The first section has two or more portals therein, each portal adapted to guide an indentor of a crimping tool into a predetermined position over a crimp area of an electrical contact in the member. The second section includes a conductor receiving section of the electrical contact, the conductor receiving section having a diameter adapted to receive a center conductor of the cable. Each crimp area is located on the conductor receiving section, wherein an electrical connection is formed by crimping the electrical contact to the conductor at each crimp area using the indentors. The crimped connection provides a substantially matched impedance in that section of the connector.

Coaxial cable connector

Coaxial connector (10) for mounting to a circuit board (12) at an edge (14) thereof and having an outer conductor housing block (20) with an enlarged rearward housing section (22) and an elongate threaded cylindrical forward housing section (30). A bottom housing section (70) is provided that depends beneath downwardly facing housing surfaces (60) of wings (24) that are coplanar with inner conductor (40), extending through a board recess (16), with the bottom housing section (70) being provided rearwardly of forwardmost ends (62) of the downwardly facing housing surfaces (60). The bottom housing section (70) is sufficiently massive to move the center of mass of the connector rearwardly of the forwardmost ends of the downwardly facing surfaces (60) so that the connector (10) remains stablely positioned without tooling on the top of the circuit board during assembly prior to soldering thereto.

Board mountable coaxial connector

A right-angle coaxial electrical connector (22) mountable to a circuit board includes a housing (24) having a plurality of contact-receiving passageways (32) and at least two coaxial contacts (36, 38) disposed in the same column defining a stacked configuration. Each coaxial contact (36, 38) includes an inner terminal and an outer conductor, the inner terminal including a right angle body portion (46) extending outwardly of the housing (24) and concluding in a first connecting portion (44) adapted for mounting to the circuit board. A metal shell (64) having two interlocking halves joinable at opposed assembly faces is disposed over the outwardly extending body portion (46) of the inner terminal thereof and engageable with the outer conductor for connection to ground. In one embodiment, the inner terminal is comprised of two terminal subassemblies (40, 52). As an alternative, the connector housing (222) could be used with an intermixture of board mountable contacts (36, 38) and cable terminated contacts (235).

Modular right angle board mountable coaxial connector

A surface mountable electrical connector (20) includes an insulating housing (22) having a coaxial subassembly receiving cavity (54) extending thereinto to a cavity bottom (56) proximate the mounting face (28); a coaxial subassembly 60) having center and outer conductors (66, 76); and first and second contacts (82, 92) along the mounting face and extending into the housing to resilient inner ends (84, 94) exposed proximate the cavity bottom. The resilient inner ends are engaged by portions of the center and outer conductors (66, 76) at the insertion end of the coaxial subassembly (60) upon full insertion into the cavity. The first and second contacts (82, 92) include outer contact sections (88, 98) adapted to be surface mounted to a circuit board. The arrangement incorporates a coaxial contact into a multiple contact hybrid connector (20) fully surface mountable to a circuit board.

Surface mountable electrical connector assembley

A coaxial connector (10) for a coaxial cable (100) having a corrugated outer conductor (108), including one which is helically corrugated. An adapter (40) of the connector can include a crimpable sleeve (44) within which is a bushing (70) initially having an axial slot (72) of selected dimension. The inner surface (74) of the bushing is fluted defining ridges and grooves (for cable of annular corrugation), or a continuous helical ridge (76) and associated groove (78) defining a thread of corresponding pitch, and general inner diameter permitting cable insertion. Upon full threading of the cable end into adapter (40), crimp sleeve (44) is crimped thus closing axial slot (72) and stopping the crimp process to achieve a minimum desired inner diameter. The adapter may be a discrete subassembly and securable to a forward connector portion in modular fashion by complementary threaded flanges (32,46). A connector (500) can also include one or more radial holes (514) extending to the cable-receiving region permitting solder (522) or conductive epoxy to be deposited following cable insertion, for mechanically and electrically connecting the rearward connector portion to the cable outer conductor (510) other than by crimping.

Method of attaching coaxial connector to coaxial cable

A coaxial connector (50) float-mounted in a panel aperture (58) for mating with a mating coaxial connector (10) fixedly mounted in a second panel (12) and spring biased to adapted to a range of axial positions of the mating coaxial connector upon full mating. A subassembly (60) is movably mounted within an outer shell (56) of connector (50) and contains a contact member (68) within a dielectric sleeve (70) all within an intermediate conductive housing (62). An annular spring (94) of minimal axial dimension is disposed between a rearwardly facing abutment surface (100) of the intermediate housing and a flange of the outer shell (56) rearwardly thereof, biasing the subassembly forwardly. Annular spring (94) permits radial movement of subassembly (60) within outer shell (56) to adjust to an offset mating coaxial connector, and also permits incremental axial movement resulting from mating. Coaxial connector (50) is useful to provide a coaxial connection to a stripline circuit board (54) having a resilient contact (116 ) secured to a signal circuit (110) thereof also permitting limited axial and radial movement resulting from connector mating.

A method for crimping a terminal (30) to an end of an inner conductor (20) of a coaxial cable (10) so that the resulting crimp joint (22) is precisely located a selected distance rearwardly from a mating point of the contact section (32) with a complementary contact section of a mating terminal affixed to an other coaxial cable. The terminal includes an intermediate section (42) of selected length, reduced diameter and location between the body section (34) and the crimp joint (24), such that, in cooperation with a smaller diameter forward portion (218) of the bore of the connector outer shell (210) coextending therealong, a region of deliberate impedance mismatch results compensating for other mismatches of the coaxial connection for minimized overall mismatch. A locating fixture (100) affixed to crimping tool (50) has an aperture (102) includes a stop surface (130) which stops the terminal during insertion through the crimping port (56) of the crimping tool and into the aperture by abutting with a ledge (38) of terminal (30), resulting in a target portion (46) of the crimping barrel (40) being precisely opposed from the tool's reciprocating crimping dies (80,82) to be crimped. Mating connectors (202,302) are affixed to cables (200,300) containing the improved crimped terminals.

An electrical connector assembly 10, and method of assembling, comprising a front electrical connector 12 and a rear electrical connector 23 secured together at a separable interface, the front electrical connector 12 including securing means 19 and guiding means 68 and a rear electrical connector 23 including receiving means 56 and aligning means 74. The securing means is engaged by the receiving means to assemble the electrical connector assembly 10 by drawing the front electrical connector 12 relatively toward the rear electrical connector 23, and the guiding means 68 being engaged by the aligning means 74 to maintain the front electrical connector 12 in a precise spatial relationship with respect to the rear electrical connector 23 during assembly and disassembly. The front entry electrical connector 12 further includes first electrical contacts 14 designed to mate with second electrical contacts 48 of the rear electrical connector 23 at the separable interface, the first electrical contacts 14 being removable through the rearward end 34 of the front electrical connector 12 exposed when the front and rear connectors are separated.

Electrical connector assembly

A splice connector (10) includes first and second outer shells (20,50) which are press fit together and secure therewithin an inner dielectric sleeve (80) defining a subassembly (12). Inner contacts (100,110) are terminated onto inner conductors of coaxial cables (160,170) and insertable into a bore (82) of the inner sleeve (80) and mate therewithin during assembly. Inner ferrules (120,140) are placed over the outer jackets of the cables, lengths of the Outer jacket (162,172) are removed and the shielding braid (164,174) folded back over forward portions (128,148) of ferrules (120,140), and the ends of the cables are inserted into large recesses (28,58) of the subassembly (12). The annular flanges (30,60) of the outer shells (20,50) defining the large recesses are then crimped onto the ferrule forward portions (128,148) carefully but firmly compressing the shielding braids (164,174) between the flange and ferrule surfaces to define an electrical grounding connection and also forming a splice joint (14).

Coaxial cable-to-cable splice connector

A triaxial adapter assembly (10) including an inner contact (50), a pair of first dielectric sleeves (70,90), an intermediate contact (110), a pair of second dielectric sleeves (130,160) and a pair of telescoping outer contact shell member (20,30) securing the adapter assembly (10) together, for interconnecting two triaxial connectors (200,300). The inner contact (50) includes an annular collar (54) to define precisely located stop means for placement of the first sleeves (70,90) thereover, which in turn have precisely located stop surfaces to abut precisely located stop means within the intermediate contact (110). The intermediate contact (110) includes an annular collar (118) to define precisely located stop means for placement of second sleeves (130,160) thereover, which in turn have precisely located stop surfaces to abut precisely located stop means within the outer contact shells (20,30). The components are precisely dimensioned and shaped, and the axially abutting surfaces at of all the components coordinated, to assure that the contact ends of the inner contact (50) are precisely known with respect to the ends of the intermediate and outer contacts (110,20,30) and to assure that the inner contact (50) is secured against axial movement at all times after assembly of adapter (10).
