The present invention is directed to carboxyl-containing monomers for use in preparing a polyurethane polymers, the carboxyl-containing monomers being the reaction product of a low molecular weight polyol compound and an acid anhydride in the presence of 5-500 ppm phosphoric acid, the carboxyl-containing monomer having a viscosity in the range of 3,000 to 100,000 centipoise, and having oligomer content of less than about 30 mg KOH/g. The present invention is also directed to methods of making the above carboxyl-containing monomers, as well as prepolymers and urethane polymers containing the above carboxyl-containing monomers.

Polyols containing grafted carboxyl groups and method of making same

The present invention relates to a process for producing a cellular or microcellular polyurethane foam wherein the reactants provide a built-in blowing capability. The process is effected by reacting a polyisocyanate with a carboxy-modified polyol to form a polyurethane and carbon dioxide, said carbon dioxide acting as an in situ blowing agent to foam said polyurethane into a cellular or microcellular polyurethane foam. In another aspect, the present invention relates to a process for forming an integral skin cellular or microcellular polyurethane foam by reacting, in a closed mold, a polyisocyanate with a carboxy-modified polyol to form a polyurethane and carbon dioxide.

Process for making cellular and microcellular polyurethane foams

The present invention relates to a process for producing a cellular or microcellular polyurethane foam wherein the reactants provide a built-in blowing capability. The process is effected by reacting a polyisocyanate with a carboxy-modified polyol to form a polyurethane and carbon dioxide, said carbon dioxide acting as an in situ blowing agent to foam said polyurethane into a cellular or microcellular polyurethane foam, said foam being formed in the absence of any chlorinated fluorocarbon blowing agents. In another aspect, the present invention relates to a process for forming an integral skin cellular or microcellular polyurethane foam by reacting, in a closed mold, a polyisocyanate with a carboxy-modified polyol to form a polyurethane and carbon dioxide.

The use of glycoside polyols together with diol or triol-initiated polyols in the production of polyurethane elastomers provides elastomers which are thermally stable at temperatures of 140.degree. F. or higher. These polyurethane elastomers are useful as thermoconductivity barriers in window holders exposed to high-temperature conditions, as engine mounts on automobiles, as encapsulators for electronic distributors, and the like.
