A lighting device and system for illuminating the interior of a vehicle, aircraft or building is provided. The lighting device and system includes a channel case made from a thermally conductive material, including aluminum. The channel case has a bottom edge and two opposed side edges forming an interior space. A circuit board is disposed within the interior space of the channel case and the circuit board includes circuit traces on the top, bottom or both sides of the circuit board. A heat transfer device is attached to the bottom of the circuit board and is further attached to the bottom of the channel case. A plurality of light-emitting diodes and resistors are mounted on the circuit board in series and generate light through a lens which is attached to the two opposed side edges of the channel case.

A computerized checklist system for use in the medical field preferably comprises a checklist unit adapted to be held in an operator's hand and a cradle for supporting the checklist unit. Each of these components includes a microprocessor for controlling the operation thereof. An optical link is provided to transmit data between the devices. The checklist unit includes suitable memory for storing alphanumeric checklist data including a sequence of checklist items. A display and a voice synthesizer selectively output checklist items. The checklist unit includes a keypad having a plurality of control switches for enabling an operator of the checklist unit to enter one of a plurality of signals indicating that the operator has taken one of a plurality of predetermined actions in response to each checklist item outputted by on the display and/or spoken by the voice synthesizer. The handheld unit also includes a program, responsive to processing of the checklist items during a work session, for storing a session log, the session log including data identifying each checklist item outputted during the work session, the signal entered by the operator in response to each checklist item, and a time when such signal was entered by the operator. Following placement of the handheld unit in the cradle after the work session, the session log data is downloaded to the cradle and then printed in a predetermined format.

Portable checklist system

A computerized checklist system is provided for ensuring safe and consistent operation of sophisticated equipment such as aircraft, milling machines, and other complicated systems. The checklist system includes a microprocessor having an erasable programmable read only memory for storing alphanumeric data in the form of checklist items. A display panel is provided for visual output of the checklist items, and a voice synthesizer is provided for audible output of the checklist items. The system is designed to accommodate checklists in the form of a number of sublists, with each sublist comprising checklist items in a predetermined sequence. A control panel is provided to initiate the checklist sequence, progress through the sequence of items, skip items in the sequence, return to skipped items automatically at the end of the sequence, and exit the sequence at any time upon command.

A tunable multiline/multiband laser includes a partial reflecting mirror, a gain control, a diffraction grating means, and a reflective mirror means. The reflective mirror means includes in a first embodiment a fabricated mirror which allows for any number of predetermined lines and combinations, which a second embodiment replaces the fabricated mirror with a material that is capable of changing its reflectivity upon changing its thermodynamic phase state. The diffraction grating means includes a grating and a lens to spatially separate initially parallel rays of different wavelengths originating from the gain cell and project the spectrum onto the surface of the mirror means. The mirror means includes a mirror constructed to normalize the round trip gain to each frequency component. The normalization is accomplished by proper choice of reflectivities at the focal point of each wavelength upon the mirror. The mirror consists of a nonreflecting substrate having either a plurality of equal size reflective areas selectively coated to vary their reflectivity or of different sizes to vary their reflectivity to equalize the round trip gain for lasing. The reflective areas can also be formed using a thin film of phase transition material and a heating means such as an electron beam gun or heating elements formed in the surface of a silicon substrate polished to optical flatness.
