A hose and wire casing adapted to withstand biological and chemical attacks. The hose/wire casing is manufactured by placing a barrier wrap of elastomer and ultra-high-molecular-weight-polyethylene around a hose body or conductor bundle. The two parts are then cured into a single unit using high temperature and high pressure. The combination of high temperature and high pressure minimize the porosity of the high-molecular-weight-polyethylene. The resulting hose/wire casing is particularly immune to chemical and biological attacks by an enemy and is easily cleaned of such agents using a variety of cleansing and neutralizing agents such as DS2, bleach, and strong bases. This cleaning results in a hose which may be handled safely with bare hands after decontamination.

An improved electro-refining plate and system which uses the same, in which each electro-refining plate has an edge protector covering the edge of the plate which is exposed to the mineral solution. The edge protector is non-conducting and is secured to the plate using heat and pressure to fuse the edge protector to itself through a series of holes positioned along the edge of the plate. In the preferred embodiment, the edge protector is composed of a ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene. Some embodiments of the invention also use rubber gaskets between the edge protector and the plate; still other embodiments employ an adhesive in conjunction with the fusing action.

An enhanced hose for use in fuel transfer and the like. Embedded within the hose's body are fiber-optic fibers in which light is transmitted. At predefined locations on the hose, selected portions of said fiber-optic fibers are exposed and structured to permit light to escape. Structuring of the fiber-optic fibers to permit light to escape is done by: terminating the fiber at that point, removing the cladding on the fiber at that point, or by creating a radical bend in the fiber. The intensity of the light escaping from the fiber-optic fibers is easily controllable by adjustment of the light source's intensity which feeds the light into the fiber-optic fibers. Additionally, compensation is made so that elongation of the hose does not break the fibers. Since no electrical current is being used, the enhanced hose is particularly useful for illuminating the exterior of a hose which is conveying explosive materials such as fuel. The enhanced hose is particularly useful for aerial refueling; but, numerous other applications exist including ship-to-ship, ship-to-shore, and ship-to-shore fueling, as well as low visibility diving operations.

A high tensile strength and high abrasion resistant removable hose covering and method of construction is described for fabricating a reusable, removable hose covering adapted to surround an inner hose by which high tensile strength in the longitudinal direction may be imparted to the combination of the inner hose and removable hose covering and in addition, extreme high resistance to environmental abrasion is obtained. The inner hose is constructed by conventional methods. The removable hose covering is constructed by firstly locating a hooking type separable closure mechanism on opposite sides, placing under tension parallel high tensile strength longitudinal cables between the closure mechanisms, encompassing the longitudinal cables with elastomeric hose materials, placing under tension transverse hose reinforcement materials between the separated closure mechanisms, adding additional layers of elastomeric materials as needed covering the transverse hose reinforcement, adding a hose covering material, and finally vulcanizing the elastomeric materials of the removable hose covering. The removable hose covering is placed around the inner hose, the closure mechanism engaged, and the combination held between two distant points. The longitudinal cables provide both the high tensile strength and the extreme resistance to environmental abrasion and damage.

A method is described for fabricating long length hose around an internal moving mandrel comprising the steps of forming an inner tube of an elastomeric or thermoplastic material, curing said inner tube, inserting a lubricated mandrel interiorly a portion of said cured tube, applying a first layer of uncured elastomer or thermoplastic tie gum to said cured tube surrounding said mandrel, encircling the layer of uncured tie gum with a reinforcing material under tension, adding multiple layers of uncured elastomer or thermoplastic tie gum and encircling reinforcing material as necessary for the hose strength required, placing an uncured elastomer or thermoplastic tie gum final layer on said reinforcing material, adding an uncured hose covering material layer on top of said tie gum final layer, wrapping under tension a strengthening material onto the hose covering material for consolidation and protection of the hose during vulcanization, moving the mandrel from the portion of the complete hose to the adjacent portion of the uncompleted hose, repeating the steps of fabricating a length of hose around the mandrel, and repeating the step of moving the mandrel to the next uncompleted portion of the hose until the full length of the inner tube has received all the fabrication materials, then moving the mandrel out of the hose, vulcanizing the uncured hose to cure the hose, and removing the consolidation wrapping from the completed hose.
