A method for establishing communications between a master unit and a plurality of node units. Of the plurality of node units, K node units are assumed to have established communications with a master unit. A first (K+1) node unit of the plurality of node units, desires to establish communications with the master unit. The method includes transmitting from the master unit, a base-station spread spectrum signal having a common signaling chip code, transmitting from the first node unit a second spread spectrum signal with a first identification code using the common-signaling chip code, transmitting from the master unit a third spread spectrum signal with a master unit identification code, using the common-signaling chip code. The method further includes generating at the first node unit using the master unit identification signal, a master unit chip code for transmitting spread spectrum signals to the master unit. Additionally, the method includes generating, at the master unit using the first identification code, a first node unit chip code for transmitting spread spectrum signals to the first node unit.

Wireless communication method and apparatus

A wireless communication system including a repeated pattern of cells, in which base station transmitters and user station transmitters for each cell may be assigned a spread-spectrum code for modulating radio signal communication in that cell. Radio signals used in that cell are spread across a bandwidth sufficiently wide that both base station receivers and user station receivers in an adjacent cell may distinguish communication which originates in one cell from another. Adjacent cells may use distinguishable frequencies and distinguishable codes, but it is sufficient if adjacent cells use distinguishable frequencies and identical codes. A repeated pattern of cells allows the codes each to be reused in a plurality of cells.

Wireless cellular communication system

A spread spectrum transmitter adapted for transmitting input data streams from a DECT (Digital European Cordless Telecommunication System) MAC (medium-access control) layer, where the data streams conform to a DECT physical layer packet structure. A related spread spectrum receiver is also disclosed.

Spread spectrum communication system using DECT protocol

A technique for spread-spectrum communication which uses more than one mode and more than one frequency band. Selectable modes include narrowband mode and spread-spectrum mode, or cellular mode and microcellular mode. Selectable frequency bands include both licensed and unlicensed frequency bands, particularly frequency bands including the 902-928 MHz, 1850-1990 MHz, and 2.4-2.4835 GHz frequency bands. Spread-spectrum communication channels are 10 MHz or less in width. The frequency band onto which spread-spectrum signals are encoded may be changed upon a change in environment or other control trigger, such as establishment or de-establishment of communication with a private access network.

Multi-band, multi-mode spread-spectrum communication system

A multiple access communication system comprising a plurality of cells, each cell comprising a plurality of sectors. A base station is located in each cell and has a plurality of antennas. Each antenna covers a sector of the cell and is associated with a polarization characteristic. In one embodiment, each cell has two sectors, and each sector facing a first direction has an antenna with a first polarization characteristic, while each sector facing a second, opposite direction has an antenna with a second polarization characteristic. In another embodiment, each cell is divided into four sectors generally arranged as quadrants. Two adjacent sectors have antennas with a first polarization characteristic, while the other two adjacent sectors have antennas with a second polarization characteristic. In a preferred embodiment, the first polarization characteristic is left hand circular polarization, and the second polarization characteristic is right hand circular polarization. Alternatively, vertically polarized antennas and horizontally polarized antennas may be used instead of circularly polarized antennas. Frequencies may be assigned to the cells in a three-frequency reuse pattern or a seven-frequency reuse pattern, or in any other suitable arrangement.

Multiple access communication system with polarized antennas

A time division multiplexed wireless communication system using the DECT protocol with spread-spectrum modulation. The wireless communication system includes a spread-spectrum transmitter and receiver. The spread spectrum transmitter transmits using an M-ary spread spectrum transmission technique, sending a predefined chip code (symbol code) for each data symbol. The predefined chip codes used are relatively short, so that spread spectrum synchronization is accomplished within about a single data symbol transmission time, well within the constraints of the DECT timing structure. The spread spectrum signal may be transmitted over a bandwidth of under 20 MHz (e.g., about 5 MHz) covering a plurality of DECT frequency channels, so as to be confined within, or overlapping with, the bandwidth of a DECT system, and so as to minimize interference with other users, if any, of the same frequency spectrum. A spread spectrum transmission in a DECT time slot may overlay one or more narrowband transmissions, or may overlay other spread spectrum transmissions. Code division multiplexing may also be used to allow multiple spread spectrum transmissions to be sent during a single DECT time slot.

A simple and flexible over-air protocol for use with a mobile telephone system, having hand-held telephones in a microcell or other type of cellular communication system. A method in which user stations communicate with one or more base stations to place and receive telephone calls, in which the user stations are provided a secure voice or data link and have the ability to handoff calls between base stations while such calls are in progress. Each base station has a set of &ldquo;air channels&rdquo; to which it transmits in sequence. The air channels supported by each base station are called that base station's &ldquo;polling loop&rdquo;. A user station receives general polling information on an unoccupied air channel, transmits responsive information to the base station, and awaits acknowledgment from the base station. Each base station may therefore simultaneously maintain communication with as many user stations as there are air channels in its polling loop. The ability of a user station to communicate on any unoccupied air channel makes the protocol air-channel agile, while the stability of user station and base station clocks may define air channels, gaps, and minor frames.

Spread spectrum communication system

An integrated communication system supporting multiple TDMA or TDD communication protocols whereby both protocols are supported within the same geographic region. Each protocol defines time frames and/or time slots of a different duration, from which is derived a composite time frame having a predefined timing structure. A first base station unit communicates in a first set of time slots of the composite time frame according to a first TDMA or TDD protocol, and a second base station unit (which may be collocated with the first base station unit) communicates in a second set of time slots of the composite time frame according to a second TDMA or TDD protocol. Coordinating electronics (such as a GPS receiver in one or both base station units) are provided so as to prevent collisions between communications occurring between each base station unit and its respective users. In a particular embodiment, a first protocol is a GSM protocol, and a second protocol is a TDD protocol utilizing spread spectrum techniques. The TDD protocol is structured so that each time slot is twice the duration of a GSM time slot, and each time frame is four times the duration of a GSM time frame. The system may comprise a number of 'stacked' base stations in a single cell, each operating over a different frequency or using different spreading codes.

Coexisting communication systems

A system for publishing data on shared broadcast channels using spread-spectrum techniques, which may comprise a spread-spectrum encoder capable of receiving data and placing it in a spread-spectrum signal format and a transmitter operating on a shared communication channel or frequency band, such as might be allocated to terrestrial point-to-point or broadcast communications. The shared communication channel may comprise a cellular system, in which data may be transmitted using spread-spectrum techniques using the transmitters and repeaters of the cellular system simultaneously with voice and other transmissions associated with the cellular system. A subscriber station may be capable of receiving using a plurality of different communication channels or frequency bands, such as a first receiver capable of cellular reception and a second receiver capable of satellite reception, at least one of which uses spread-spectrum techniques. The subscriber station may also comprise a transmitter using at least one communication channel or frequency band, so that the subscriber station may receive data or other transmissions using one channel and may request further data or other transmissions using a second channel.

A multi-band receiver capable of monitoring one or more frequency bands comprises bank of bandpass filters and a demodulator comprising a single frequency synthesizer and a frequency source.

A spread spectrum transmitter for generating a plurality of spread spectrum codes comprises a shift register having a plurality of stages, with a plurality of tap sets connected to selected ones of said stages. Each tap set defines a different spread spectrum code, which may be maximal or non-maximal. Outputs from the tap sets are combined using exclusive-OR gates and fed back to through a table of logic gates to the input of the shift register. A serial data register is loaded from a data stream and clocked periodically into a parallel data register. The parallel data register corresponds to a data symbol and is connected to the table, whereby one of the spread spectrum codes at a time is selected. A code portion of the spread spectrum code up to a designated length is generated for each data symbol. More than one code portion may be simultaneously sent using offset quadrature phase shift keying. A receiver may detect the code portion or code portions sent by delaying the received signal and combining it with a plurality of delayed versions thereof, the delay period for each delayed version corresponding to the tap locations in the tap set of the transmitter shift register.
