A connector assembly including an outer housing having a front end, a back end, and a central axis extending therebetween. The outer housing has a passage that extends therethrough. The connector assembly also includes a slidable connector that is disposed within the passage. The slidable connector includes a communication module. The connector assembly also includes a spring frame that is positioned between the slidable connector and the outer housing. Prior to mating with a mating connector, the spring frame mechanically couples the slidable connector with respect to the outer housing. After the mating connector and the communication module are communicatively coupled, the spring frame releases the slidable connector from the outer housing such that the slidable connector is permitted to move relative to the outer housing. The spring frame mechanically couples the slidable connector relative to the mating connector.

A fiber optic connector assembly includes a front housing and a rear housing movably coupled to the front housing between retracted and advanced positions. A drive mechanism is coupled to the rear housing that moves the rear housing from the retracted position to the advanced position. Fiber optic connectors are fixedly coupled to the rear housing with a mating end driven with respect to the front housing in a mating direction when the rear housing is moved from the retracted position to the advanced position. Optionally, the fiber optic connector assembly may be side-loaded into position with respect to a fixed connector assembly, and then the fiber optic connector is driven to the advanced position in a direction generally perpendicular to the direction of loading.

A connector having a front and back orientation and comprising: (a) a cable having at least a jacket and an optical fiber; (b) a ferrule assembly comprising a rear portion for attachment to said jacket, and a ferrule defining a bore hole for containing said optical fiber; (c) a housing having a front portion configured for mating with a mating structure and a back portion configured for attachment to a boot; (d) a spring biasing said ferrule assembly forward in said housing; and (e) a boot secured to said back portion of said housing and extending rearward around said tight-jacketed cable, said boot having an internal channel large enough to allow axial movement of said ferrule assembly relative to said boot.

An adapter includes an integrally-molded metal housing defining a first port axially aligned with a second port, each adapted to receive an optical connector plug having a cylindrical ferrule. A junction portion defines a cylindrical axial passage between the ports and has a first end adjacent the first port and a second end adjacent the second port. The first end of the junction portion has a ridge portion extending inwardly, thereby restricting a diameter of the passage at the first end. An alignment sleeve is disposed in the passage, the alignment sleeve having a diameter suitable for receiving a ferrule of each optical connector plug and axially aligning the ferrules to effect optical coupling of fibers contained in the ferrules. An end cap is disposed at the second end and is engaged with the junction portion to restrict the diameter of the passage at the second end, thereby securing the sleeve in the passage.

A duplex fiber optic splice has a fiber-receiving element, two clamping elements covering opposite faces of the fiber-receiving element, and a spring element. A bearing key may be inserted into a bearing channel in the fiber-receiving element and rotated resulting in resilient disengagement of each of said clamping faces from said fiber-receiving element face. The resilient disengagement of the clamping elements are independent of each other. The splice assembly may be used alone or in conjunction with an array ferrule, pre-terminated with a fiber stub, and a housing to provide an adhesiveless field terminable connector.

Multiple fiber splice element and connector

A universal connector assembly for mounting one or more universal connectors within a pair of facing, spaced apart connector slots of a connector outlet. The connector assembly is made up of a mounting yoke and the one or more connectors. The mounting yoke contains a pair of flanges, connected by a crossbar, configured to interfit within the connector slots of the connector outlet. In addition, the mounting yoke contains bracing members and latching elements interengageable with latching elements of the connectors for fixed positioning the connectors in relation to the mounting yoke and locking the connectors in position against the bracing members. The connectors are positioned within the mounting yoke to form the connector assembly. The connector assembly is then positioned within the connector outlet to provide a secure connection location.

Connector assembly

A fiber optic splice assembly comprising: (a) a fiber-receiving element having opposite faces, first and second ends, and first and second sides, each the face having at least one elongate fiber channel and an elongate bearing channel, (b) two clamping elements, each the clamping element having a clamping face and an opposite spring face, first and second sides, the clamping elements covering at least a portion of each elongate fiber and bearing channel, and (c) a splice spring for imparting opposing normal forces on the spring faces of the clamping elements and along the first side of the fiber-receiving element, the spring permitting independent resilient disengagement of each the clamping faces from the fiber-receiving element face.

A novel forward-facing, aft-attached cantilever beam is provided as a latch for securing a fiber optic connector to a receptacle. The beam has engagement structure on its free end which attaches to the receptacle. The connector includes a plug housing formed from a member having a forward end and a rearward end and an axial passageway therethrough through which at least one optical fiber provided in the fiber optic cable extends. The forward end is inserted into the receptacle with the rearward end extending from the receptacle. The cantilevered beam has an end fixed to a rearward portion of the member and its free end extends forwardly toward the forward end of the member. To engage the connector with the receptacle, the free end of the cantilevered beam is biased toward the member and the member is slid into the receptacle. Once fully inserted, the engagement structure on the cantilevered beam engages retention structure in the receptacle. The connector can be released from engagement with the receptacle by biasing the cantilevered beam such that the engagement structure on the beam is released from the retention structure of the receptacle and thereafter pulling the connector out of the receptacle.

A pin keeper for use in a transition between a multiple fiber ferrule holding at least two fibers and having a fiber to fiber spacing substantially equal to a first lateral dimension and a fiber optic body having a fiber to fiber spacing substantially equal to a second lateral dimension which is different from said first lateral dimension. The pin keeper is disposed between the ferrule and the fiber optic body. The fibers pass through the pin keeper, which splays the fibers from the first lateral dimension to the second lateral dimension.

A receptacle for fiber optic cable connectors has a shutter which consists of an assembly of a plate and a spring adjacent one end of the plate, the assembly being positioned inside the receptacle's open end, the plate being inclined inwardly and deforming the spring so that it exerts an erecting force on the plate, and the assembly being too large for the plate to become fully erect.

An optical fiber connector assembly for receiving an optical fiber and reducing transverse offset loss has a ferrule (15) having a plurality of tabs (19) disposed circumferentially thereabout. The ferrule (15) and a compression spring (20) are retainably received in a cable attachment body (25) in one of a plurality of possible rotational orientations to form an assembly (11). Apertures (44) and longitudinal cutouts (42) in the plug body (40) receive retention lugs (35) on the cable attachment body (25). In an FC connector, a plurality of latch beams (67) on the plug body (40) retainably engage an internal retention diameter (71) in an FC coupling nut. The ferrule assembly (11) together with the plug body (40) are assembled to the FC coupling nut (60) using axial motions.

Optical fiber connector assemblies. The connectors comprise plug bodies having two cantilevered beams disposed in a rear interior portion of the plug body and a ferrule which houses an optical fiber that is front-loaded into the plug body and which is adapted to bias the two cantilevered beams when placed in the plug body such that the plug body snaps around the plug member to captivate the ferrule member in the optical fiber connector. The connector is further comprised of a spring placed axially in the plug body for spring-loading the ferrule member in the plug body, and a rear housing adapted to receive the rear portion of the ferrule member when the ferrule member is placed in the plug body. The optical fiber connectors which are described herein ensure precise optical alignment of optical waveguides in the connector and are simple to assemble.

An apparatus to form a duplex-like fiber optic connector by maintaining plug assemblies in a side-by-side relation to enable simultaneous mating with sleeves of a receptacle housing. The apparatus has a pair of separate housings, each housing having a chamber where one of the plug assemblies is retainably received. A retention member is incorporated into one of the housings and a clasp member is incorporated into the other of the housings. The clasp member and the retention member are retainably interconnected to hold the housings in a side-by-side relationship with float therebetween, whereby the float accommodates any misalignment between the plug assemblies and the sleeves.

A universal adapter including a generic fixed housing (10) capable of receiving diverse back panel assemblies (20-1, 20-2 . . . 20-n) each having a set of coupling elements (22-1, 22-2 . . . 22-n) which may differ according to industry standards. The adapter facilitates optical coupling of, for example, a Fiber Distributed-Data Interface (FDDI) style connector or an ESCON.TM. style connector with either an SC.TM. style connector, an ST.TM. style connector, an FC style connector, or any other type of optical connector.

Universal adapter for optical connectors

A duplex fiber optic connector assembly enables mating the fibers of a first multifiber cable with like fibers of a second cable or cables with maximum axial alignment of the respective fiber paris. An interconnect member receives cable terminating connectors in opposite sides thereof. Each connector carries the fibers of a respective cable in individual ferrules, each ferrule having limited floating mount within the respective connector. The mating pairs of ferrules are received in opposite ends of receptor members each of which has an axially profiled bore adapted to receive the respective ferrules and a profiled outer surface which allows movement about the geometric center of the receptor so as to axially align the bores of the ferrules received therein. Connectors at each end of a predetermined length of fiber optic cable provide a fiber optic extension cord, analogous to the well-known electrical extension cord, for convenient and efficient interconnection between optical signal-using equipments. Small interconnect members receive the connectors of such fiber optic extension cords to allow even wider-ranging interconnections. Wall boxes containing such interconnect members, connected to permanently installed fiber optic cables conveying optical signals from a central optical signal source, allow a user to readily access optical signals by 'plugging-in' a connector therein.
