An improved method is provided for controlling a power tool having a rotary shaft. The method includes: disposing an inertial mass in a housing of the power tool, such that the inertial mass is freely rotatable about an axis of rotation which is axially aligned with the rotary shaft; monitoring rotational motion of the power tool in relation to the inertial mass during operation of the power tool; and activating a protective operation based on the rotational motion of the power tool in relation to the inertial mass.

A vacuum electronic power tool sense system senses the operation of a power tool that is plugged into an auxiliary outlet box and the vacuum source is automatically operated to facilitate user clean-up of debris generated by use of the power tool. The auxiliary outlet box can be removably mounted to the vacuum housing.

A cordless power tool has a housing which includes a mechanism to couple with a removable battery pack. An intrusion sensing device includes an intrusion detection sensor enclosed within a housing and operable to detect an intrusion into a container. A mounting detection mechanism contacts the surface of the container when the housing is mounted thereto and is operable to detect when the housing is not in contact with the surface of the container. An access detection mechanism is operably connected to an access panel of the housing and operable to detect removal of the access panel from the housing. A control module is operable in a setup mode and an active mode. The control module is adapted to receive an alarm message from the intrusion detection sensor and operable to initiate an alarm event during the setup mode which varies from an alarm event initiated during the active mode. A wireless transmitter is operable to transmit an alarm indication signal to a remote monitoring system.

A battery monitoring device of a battery pack configured for powering a cordless power tool may include an integrated circuit connected to a microprocessor of the pack that is external to the integrated circuit, and which is connected to each of N battery cells of the pack. The integrated circuit may be configured to take, singly or sequentially, a sampled reading comprising one of an individual cell voltage or a total pack voltage for all cells in the pack. The sampled reading is filtered in the integrated circuit prior to being read by the microprocessor.

In a cordless power tool system, protection methods, circuits and devices are provided to protect against fault conditions within a battery pack that is operatively attached to a power tool or charger, so as to prevent internal or external damage to the battery pack or attached tool or charger. The exemplary methods, circuits and devices address fault conditions such as over-charge, over-discharge, over-current, over-temperature, etc.

A hand held motor driven electrically powered tool, in particular a rotary hammer, comprising a spindle () for rotatingly driving a tool or bit (), a spindle rotary drive train () for rotatingly driving the spindle () and an arrangement for detecting blocking events (). Blocking events occur when the tool or bit of the tool become rotationally fixed in the material being bored in which case the rotary drive on the spindle from the motor causes the tool housing to rotate in a user's grip. According to a first aspect of the invention an overload clutch () is provided in the spindle rotary drive train for transmitting rotary drive to the spindle below a predetermined torque and slipping above the predetermined torque arranged such that the overload clutch cuts off rotary drive to the spindle, for example by reducing the predetermined torque at which the overload clutch () slips when a blocking event is detected so as to cut off rotary drive to the spindle in response to a blocking event being detected. According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a mode change mechanism () for selectively disengaging a clutch () so as to cut off the rotary drive to the spindle () and the clutch is disengaged when a blocking event is detected so as to cut off rotary drive to the spindle in response to a blocking event being detected.
